This is a question thats been asked for a long time but nobody seems to do anything about it. Its clear that something needs to change but what can the average person do? I just joined a group on FB thats starting to grow quick to punish bad judges in boxing and create awareness but more needs to be done.
Texas is among the worst, at least in the U.S. Is emailing the commissions appointing judges the only thing we can do? We could boycott and not watch the fights with bad judges but that likely wont happen.
There are certain fights where I feel sympathy for judges- an example being Lamont Peterson vs Amir Khan- forgetting the docking of points etc etc, it was a tough 1 to score because do you go with the more slick work from khan who was much more accurate or do you go with the guy who is pressurising the other man and getting inside and roughing up the other mans game? I personally had the fight with Peterson but I can fully understand the mixture of different score cards that people came up with because many of the rounds were purely down to what you prefer too see. Where I don't have sympathy is when they manage to score fights like Morales vs Garcia so 1 sided, didn't a judge have Garcia winning 9 of the 12 rounds or something? see to me many of those rounds were clear morales rounds, lucky for these judges it won't get talked about too much because most people did have Garcia winning the fight, but by no way near that margin. Another was when Helenius got the nod over Chisora, surely there should be a way of turning this into a no contest? there should be a board of directors or something that could overturn decisions when judges give a decision to a man who clearly lost, If its a close fight and the judges get it wrong then thats different but when a guy wins virtually every round clearly but doesn't get a decision then surely there should be a way of overturning it?
every fight should have a split of 75/25 with the 75 going to the winner of the fight. That way there will never be "the guy who is supposed to win"
Or have everyone watching text message the guys name to the network the fight is on right after its over...joke
Nothing really can be done. If it's close, it's close and its 99% of the time going to go to the A side fighter.
But for stuff like Williams-Lara and the like i dont know
Probably nothing, any sport with judging has a huge human element and in boxing there is really little that can be done to standardize. It all comes down to what someone likes so even if highly trained that still plays a role.
It just needs to be accepted that scoring a fight is difficult and subjective and even in close fights if a judge likes another guys work a bit more they will probably end up way ahead because if I like a guys work in one close round I will probably like him in other close rounds.
