Mayweather is like that $200.00 bottle of wine. I personally cannot tell the big difference between the $200.00 wine and the $15.00 wine. The $200.00 wine is supposed to be much more pleasing to the palate and have a superior bouquet, but it does not seem that different to me.
So Mayweather charges the premium pricetag to view him fighting. For that charge I want to see something that makes me get out of my chair or make me cry out. I don't want the equivalent of a dry seminar on boxing nuance. So in terms of exciting, the Friday night fights or the HBO free fights are just as exciting to me, in some cases more so. Floyd is historically not a risk taker.
He is not boring if you an actual boxing fan who appreciates skills. He may be boring if your just an MMA fan who likes seeing two un-talented sluggers trade blow for blow. Personally, i find that boring
Appreciating his skills and finding him exciting are two different things. Yes, you can find his display of skill exciting at times. But how many times can you find his counter right exciting? Is it gonna KO his opponent suddenly? No. So where is the excitement?
When you see the same thing over and over again, it becomes less exciting and eventually boring, no matter how skillful or perfect it is.
All of Floyds fights for many years have turned out exactly how we expected. Aprt from JMM.....we thought he would KO him. Instead we were treated to another UD. :damnit:
If he went for the KO, or was more offensive, then he would be exciting to watch, like he was many years ago.
I get your point but your label of "potshotting" isn't the reality in the ring. ODH stopped engaging becaue he was getting hit hard not potshotted or because he was old. Shane didn't want to engage either. Obviously he could've murked JMM but didn't.
So what fights above 140 has he played it safe? He jsut doesn't have 1 punch KO power at this weight.
All of them.
Thats his style, thats what he does. He slows the pace of the fight, allowing his opponent to throw flurries and get frustrated, then pot-shots (throws one punch at a time).
Im sure his single shots are hard, but theyre still single shots. So its boring to watch.
He has great speed, timing, accuracy etc. Genius. But boring.
don't think that's what he's saying at all. a fan of the sport appreciates both of those fights for what they are.

............
^right...and theres that lil bit of sinister aspect in that your opponent has to helplessly watch the clock tick down slowly...in boxing thats the equivalent of carrying your opponent to the high probability finish. sometimes getting carried to the end is actually more embarassing and demoralizing, and more satisfying for the winner getting his rounds in
im not trying to preach, but for those who actually boxed and understand all the tiny details and nuances that is boxing, floyd is an absolute genius and somewhat of a freak.
he just seems to know all the angles, all the aspects of being effective and victorious in his sport and most importantly, performs the moves and motions when he has to come fight night.
for a student of the game, he is not boring at all... but the pure boxing fan in me still thinks floyd is scared of manny as a boxing professional.
PBF could at least TRY to give what he's promising when he's selling the fight. That's why it's not unreasonable to assume most fans who see PBF's fights want to see him lose. They hate super cautious fighters. Marquez was forced to fight aggressively because Floyd won't take risk being countered. JMM could have done what he did in the Pac fight and insisted on playing the role -- fight backwards. Fvck the audience if they boo and heckle. Floyd doesn't give a crap, why should he?
Look at the Macklin/Martinez fight, for example. A mediocre boxer gave Sergio a competitive fight in the majority of the rounds because SM was forced to switch roles. Funny thing was team Martinez hired a brawler for a sparring partner anticipating Sergs would get the juicy role again as a counterpuncher, fight backwards and put up another exhibition match. Man, the audience was booing and Sergs was confused. LOL.
:usa2:
In football, when you are up big, you stop passing and run the ball as to not further humiliate your opponent. Thats what floyd did to JMM after the knockdown.
I admire and respect his skills. They are like no other. That said: He is one of the most boring fighters ever. The only thing that makes him exciting is the fact that he talks *****. Whitaker, Leonard, guys who had mad skills and speed just like Mayweather were tons more exciting not because they would "run to the middle of the ring and swing til someone dropped" but because they opened up and once they hurt their opponent they went for the kill. They unloaded hell on them all the while they maintained their form, and that was exciting. Mayweather is perfectly content just pop shotting all night and that IMO is very boring. If he would unleash his skills to their top potential and at least try to hurt his opponents then that would be nice to watch, but he doesn't. He never beat anyone the way he beat Gatti after that fight. He is boring and if you admire his skills, that's fine, and if you find him exciting, then that is also fine, although it is very very difficult to understand for most boxing fans

............hardcore fans don't want explosive action?
I've used this example a Million times...
if you thought Mayweather - Baldomire was more entertaining than Gatti-Ward I
you're lying

He's boring for the casual boxing fan that wants fights with explosive action.

............
Those Oscar highlights, where Oscar threw all those punches and landed 1 or 2, where as Floyd popped him at will, are perfect examples of Jim Lampley and dumb fans in the crowd not understanding whats going on in the ring.
Floyd is an exciting fighter. Part of what makes it so exciting to watch his fights is also his aura of being undefeated though and because he's never lost a fight. Castillo I, some thought Castillo should have won, I had JLC winning by a point. Floyd's personality also make him more exciting to watch.
But, his boxing is still great to watch. He's so technically gifted and he just rarely even struggles in the slightest. That's why when Shane landed 2 big shots on him, EVERYONE was talking about it.
Like people have said, his fights lack drama, so they are not exciting. His style is risk free, so he doesnt gamble, and therefore is not exciting. He dominates his opponents and pot shots = boring.
If he went for the KO, or was more offensive, then he would be exciting to watch, like he was many years ago.
That doesnt matter. They were given no chance of even challenging Floyd, and thats exactly how the fights played out. = boring.
Truth.
Thats not it.
People knew Roy Jones, Tyson and Pac have zero chance of losing after a few rounds, yet the fights didnt become boring.
Floyd is boring because his style is very predictable and he doesnt take risks to get the KO.
Pot - shotting = not exciting.

I never though he was real boring just not exciting either.

You do realize that Sugar Shan & JMm are both hall of Famers that were coming off KO wins, right?
That doesnt matter. They were given no chance of even challenging Floyd, and thats exactly how the fights played out. = boring.
Floyd's talking gets a lot of people to watch him, but they can leave disappointed at times because the talk may not have matched the performance. There's no doubt that even casuals can see how great his skills are. However, during fights when it's clear that he's in a different class than his opponent and he still chooses to cruise towards a win by seemingly not trying to take him out, that can rub people the wrong way.
TL;DR If you promise greatness and excitement, fans will expect it.
Truth.
When people are praying for you to lose and by round 4 the reality hit them that isn't going to happen of course you would be boring to them.
