Last Saturdays destruction of Juanma Lopez at the hands of Orlando Salido put an end to Top Ranks second efforts of making the mega fight Gamboa vs Lopez.
Sorry Bob, you let that fight marinate a little too long.
Because of this, Gamboa lost the opportunity of his biggest pay day at the 126lb featherweight division.
How would you react if the promotional company responsible for getting you the big bucks just cost you 7 figures? .... Move up two divisions, put your undefeated record on the line, and accept 1.1 million that needs to be split among a hand full of other people. (Ahmet Oner, Luis de Cuba, Tony Gonzalez Emmanuel Steward (the would be trainer for Gamboa vs Rios ). ??
I dont think so.
It was time for Gamboa to take matters into his own hands and eliminate some of the middle men with whom he splits a majority of his earnings.
If Gamboa is going to part ways with Top Rank, now is the perfect time, while he has the support of Floyd Mayweather and Golden Boy, and good lawyers.
His stock is rising and the perfect time.
Even HBO has decided that April 14th will not be televised without Gamboa.
Yuriorkis Gamboa is the next money making machine in boxing and Floyd Mayweather knows it. His talent is undeniable and his style will keep fans on the edge of their seats.
Excellent move by Gamboa. The best is yet to come.
I keep seeing this thread pop up and I am wondering why.
There couldn't be a dumber thread with worse timing.
Hey hey we had some good discussions here! Till it got hijacked by a troll with no sense of intelligence who only knows how to smash a keyboard... just look at his posts. All I see is .... .. ....... . ...................... ... .

Ignorant, uneducated children always result to calling names the moment their limited intellects run into a wall. (In your case, that's very quickly.) There are many major cities Top Rank doesn't frequent, does that mean there are no fans there? And where are there 45 million Africans? In Africa?
I can tolerate stupid comments, but not disrespectful ones.

actually that's a BS thing to say you're right
and I don't side with him, I sided with what I thought was the intent of his comments
now that I see he wants nothing more than to start sh1t with you guys
fuhq it go in on him
good debate none the less
Lol sorry I couldn't do the whole quote fancy thing but I'm on the phone and its a hassle. I think I rather spend my time debating with people such as you than waste my time with a troll like him.
I don't think a comparison with Pacquiao is valid. It took Pacquiao lots of fights (some with very well-known boxers) on HBO to build up his popularity, starting with the Tyson-Lewis undercard ten years ago. It was a very long process. Same with Floyd.
The problem with Gamboa is he is already 30 and has been quite invisible for the average boxing fan. He has fought some good boxers but no real famous names and he doesn't have 10 years to build up his fanbase. I don't think Gamboa has the time nor the support (from fans, HBO, promoters) to become a cashcow.
Holy ****! I was NOT aware Gamboa is that old already! Damnnnn. I thought he was in his early 20s.

Always good debating with you, Eaner!
Gamboa is actually already pretty big in Miami. Cuban people talk about him all the time and I always see him on the newspaper somewhere or in Spanish ads.
This is anecdotal evidence. You don't have any numbers to back your claim, but you know it's there. In the absence of meaningful numbers, I'm willing to factor this into my view. Thanks for the input.
Eaner and this was the ignorant piece of sh*t you were siding with?
I think us cubans are being realistic saying Gamboa could be but isn't atm. So his "cash cow" status if he was to be, is on hold sure to legal issues.

So u cubans agree with me,That gamboa wont be a cash cow.
For the reason of all the cubans are locked up n cuba lol

for cash cow status? yeah that's pretty low
especially for someone who's been on HBO on and off since 2008.
sure you can Pacquiao did it with ~3.4 million American based Filipino fans
The thread title clearly states "Cash cow in the making." Obviously Gamboa isn't one now. The TS made his case for Yuri's future status as a superstar.
Manny hasn't become a superstar because of his Filipino fans, and Gamboa won't become a mega-star because of Cuban fans (even less so). A big star becomes such because they capture the imagination of much greater masses.
for cash cow status? yeah that's pretty low
especially for someone who's been on HBO on and off since 2008.
relax man
onechance said Cuban fans don't care about Gamboa correct? now the way I interpet it is that he meant they do not show support by going to his fights, watching him on TV etc etc
hell this entire thread is about the potential of Gamboa as a cash cow right? I mean is it okay for people on here to debunk that without you getting so touchy?
geez
I showed you what I mean by support
sure you can Pacquiao did it with ~3.4 million American based Filipino fans
here's one what?
We are obviously not on the same page here. I never claimed Gamboa was a cash cow or a big draw. My whole beef/argument was when onechance threw some bs out there claiming that us cuban fans don't support Gamboa and you agreed with him but now you're changing your whole argument... CubanGuy's argument was just cause his fan base and draw isn't as big as other boxers it doesn't mean we don't support him. It simply means us cubans are outnumbered in this country.
what earlier posts? Im not going back through this
I said it was in this thread. You can't go back a couple of pages? Here: "There are only approximately 1.5 million Cubans living in the United States. The Cubans on the island are trapped. There are approximately four million Puerto Ricans living in mainland United States. Another four million on the island travel freely. That makes eight million. There are well over thirty million Mexicans living in the U.S.!"
messageboards equate to the hardcore of the hardcore and that is a very minute number. I know, I ran MaxBoxing's board for 4 years. We are the small minority so while he may be a great interest on here it does not mean he translates well to the average boxing fan.
I made it clear that the boards are only a part of what I base my judgement on. We'll agree to disagree on this subject. I believe Gamboa is a fairly popular fighter, at least among fans.
actually he was. HBO wanted Rios in with someone other than Abril for him to still be on 4/14. Wasn't so much as Rios more than the level of opponent dropping from Gamboa to Abril. They were looking for another match up that could garner excitement thus their requests for Alvarado or Provodnikov
and it seems more like HBO is allowing TR to use their vehicle to do the PPV not fully buying onto it.
I'll grant you that.
but in this instance he is not off in his statements
you may like your fighters you may have community presence about your fighters
but until you show support by going or viewing or getting the masses interested in Gamboa then in reality he does not have your support
He is indeed off in his statements, as he so often is, because you can't blame Cubans for lacking a fan-base when there are very few Cubans to begin with. And what am I supposed to say about Mikey Garcia not drawing flies, when he has a 30+ million Mexican fan-base to draw from?
that comes off naive
you realize that in boxing they have handed unwarranted millions to fighters undeserving
let me ask you this then
why would we criticize HBOs handling of Berto, or Bradley neither of whom draw or get ratings yet when it comes to Gamboa
"oh well that's different they know what they see in Gamboa"
really why?
HBO and Showtime overspend that's been an issue for some time, discussed here on these very boards
just because it's now focused on Yuri doesn't change the landscape
That's not the point. Of course they make mistakes. Everyone does. The point is that they are making a bet on Gamboa. That indeed says something. It's not done for just anyone. They might be wrong about Yuri, too. But I tend to favor their judgement over people on an Internet message board....
What are you showing me? That Gamboa drew 2k fans? You either have pretty high standards or mine are low. That's a decent number to me considering how often Gamboa our any of these other Cuban fighters fight.
for cash cow status? yeah that's pretty low
especially for someone who's been on HBO on and off since 2008.
This goes back to the previous ***** were we mentioned us Cuban fans atte scarce in this country due to our restrictions of not being able to migrate to this country. You went from siding with onechance's ridiculous claim that us cuban boxing fans do not support Gamboa to saying Gamboa is not a draw. I never claimed Gamboa was a draw, I agree with you on that as a matter of fact. I think we all do.
relax man
onechance said Cuban fans don't care about Gamboa correct? now the way I interpet it is that he meant they do not show support by going to his fights, watching him on TV etc etc

And offended? If you wanna call it that. Its absurd to say a cuban boxing fan does not support Gamboa or any of our fighters. They are the ones who bring home the medals, the only thing we have since there's no pro for us. Especially with no facts or numbers. Its like saying a cuban baseball fan didn't support El Duque. Only reason why onechance made that claim is cause of what happened in Miami or other people claiming that Gamboas fans were pissed.
I showed you what I mean by support
Btw we are talking about cuban BOXING fans not the typical cuban who doesn't follow boxing cause its freaking obvious if you ask ANYONE who doesn't follow the sport they gonna be like who? That's anywhere. But like I said, you can ask my mom who has watched 5 fights her whole life and she can tell you who Gamboa is. I know knowing and supporting is 2 different things but I'm trying to get my point across. Can't support someone if you don't follow the sport.
sure you can Pacquiao did it with ~3.4 million American based Filipino fans
Here's one for ya, if we were able to get USA channels in cuba I bet you any of these cuban boxers would outdraw Juanma. As far as cubans vs puerto ricans is concerned.
here's one what?
http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/6956711/yuriorkis-gamboa-cruises-daniel-ponce-de-leon
his last fight
knowing who Gamboa is and actually supporting him are two different vehicles
again why are you so offended?
here so you know I am being fair about this
Mikey Garcia's been on TV, twice on HBO even and yet can't draw **** even in his backyard
facts are facts and they lay some real truths about what is real and what you want to believe is real
Gamboa is not a draw right now. Maybe he can be but now with all these legal issues it IMO sets him back a bit
What are you showing me? That Gamboa drew 2k fans? You either have pretty high standards or mine are low. Reason why I didn't say Rios is cause Mexico is much bigger than Cuba. And while Cuba is bigger than PR, PR also has more people here on this side of the states.
