Here is the deal. There are two clear reason's for Gamboa's actions, and they are both in the end connected as well.
1. Top Rank takes at least 30% of Gamboa's purse, Ahmet Oner who is not only Gamboa's co promoter, he also happens to be with Gamboa before top rank and in fact was the guy who paid and got Gamboa out of Cuba takes about another 30%. I'll just focus on the big boys and skip over the managers like Luis DeCubas and Gonzales who are also taking a percentage of his purse.
So just there you are leaving Gamboa, the fighter, taking home only 40%.
But it dosen't end there.
2. Gamboa is used to his cuban trainer 'Ismael Salas' and became champion with him, said he would never want to fight for anyone else. Top Rank forces him to switch trainer and go with Emmanuel Stewart right before the biggest and most dangerous fight of his career, even though gamboa was completely against it. Oh and dosen't speak a word of english by the way.
Not only that, but add to that that Emmanuel Stewart for being who he is would most likely take no less than 10% of gamboa's cut.
At this point Gamboa's purse is left at 30% to fight his biggest fight without his head trainer.
Is he really to blame for not fighting Rios ? Or is the corruption in boxing we should be once again blaming.
Its a good one to think about.
Top Rank and Co is trying to bully Gamboa into a fight that is not good for him. Gamboa is doing the right thing... even tho i really wanted to see this fight :/
Gamboa's lawsuit has a copy of his financial terms for the Rios fight and they don't even come close to the numbers listed by the thread starter. Top Rank and Arena were being paid through HBO's license fee and weren't getting anything from Gamboa's $1.1 million dollar purse - the amount the promoters agreed to pay him!
His contract terms are also in the suit. Gamboa gets a min of $250-300 for ANY fight. Top Rank and Arena get 0% his minimum.
I have no idea where the thread starter got his facts, and why he posted them on numerous forums, but they are WAY OFF the actual numbers on paper.
From what we have heard, SEVERAL writers callled Top Rank's legal counsel asking about these numbers and they continue to point back to the same user on every forum someone reads this on.
I don't know much about boxing contracts, but this seems quite unusual. It certainly shows things in a different light. If Gamboa was to be paid $1.1M and only pay taxes, trainers fees and the like, he would've netted in the ballpark of 600k. Not bad.
Is it commonplace for promoters to take their fee from the network, not out of the fighter's purse? How rare are purse "minimums"?
Promoters are the Leeches that have been sucking the blood out of boxing for years.
These guys need to all be eliminated and one boxing authority needs to control the sport similar to the NBA, MLB, etc.
There should be a law against these type of slavery deals.
Agree^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

:lol1::lol1:
From a common law perspective you don't need to sign a formal doc for court to deem a valid contract is in place. If Yuri has taken 70k in relation to an offer from TR, the court would likely see that as consideration and thus an acceptance of terms on his part. Gamboa's only hope (if we take these "facts" at face value) is that the terms he agreed to were subsequently changed which would give him a potential out.
Sad situation. It would be a tragedy to have a fighter of his caliber sidelined for a long period of time.
in all honesty he only has himself to blame for all this
1. if you are unhappy with your promoters then do not agree to a fight with them as promoters
2. if you do not want to fight on 4/14 then do not allegedly take advances against a fight you had no intentions of going through

But then how to prove that all terms were agreed to, without evidence of minds meeting through a signed and sealed contract?
He agreed and took money in advance. Those are the facts.
Facts? So you were there the day they agreed upon everything and Gamboa "took the advance"?
For all we know Gamboa and Top Rank been operating on an expired contract according to Gamboa's lawyer. So wtf do you know about facts? I'm pretty sure all the "facts"haven't been thrown at us. As you can see all we know are the points that are only convenient to Top Rank in this situation.

Well if everything that you say is true then I dont blame Gamboa. If the fight did happen then Bam Bam would have got dealt with it.
here is the thing I have been told
as far as his contract goes he believes it's expired much like the way Donaire thought his was as well. My guess is that TR has options on renewal which they probably exercised and Gamboa isn't realizing that
now as far as the actual fight is concerned let me ask you this
how do you take an advance on a fight that you never agreed to?
From a common law perspective you don't need to sign a formal doc for court to deem a valid contract is in place. If Yuri has taken 70k in relation to an offer from TR, the court would likely see that as consideration and thus an acceptance of terms on his part. If this is all true, then it's a shame what they are trying to do with Gamboa.
but............
I read that Gamboa and his people took 70K in advance money for this fight, so you can't take money and then back out of it after the venue is set up and everything is paid for.
Not a good way of doing business and Gamboa needs to surround himself with better people and stop listening to the whispers in his ears.
Gamboa is going to be sued, he's going to lose and his rep has been damaged. Not a good way to start off before what could be your biggest fight ever.
Gamboa just like Mayweather Jr has the following similarity:
Both have No defeat ("0);
Both been accused of beating up their respective wives;
And Now, Gamboa is facing a Court suit, just like Mayweather jr., having several Court suits filed against him.
Indeed, Gamboa feels at home at Mayweather Jr Boxing Gym.
I won't be surprise if Gamboa will be sporting a clean shaven head!
this is all a mistake in the first place, to think he climbed 2 wt divisions for the 1st time fighting probably the most dangerous champion of 135!! He should have a tuneup at 135 or 130 b4 taking on Rios just to test the waters!!Look wat Pac did, he did climb slowly not 2 division directly! Gamboa has a point!
What about being forced to train with a trainer yo don't want to be with, as part of that contract.
Salas is way better for Gamboa than Steward or uncle Roger. I think going to Roger is a bad move, they wouldn't understand eachother one single word. He should train with Salas like Rigoneaux.
Oner has a terrible rep. From what I understand, he was basically kicked out of Germany. He survived an assassination attempt leading up to that. Look at the Airich-Williams fight where he walked up to the ring and rang the bell in the middle of the round to keep Williams from KO'ing his fighter.
Leave the guy who got you out of cuba and started your career, even thought he was willing to give up most of his cut to make you a star ? but instead go with the guy who wants to screw you and as a bonus for screwing you making you sign a 5 year contract ?
I don't get what you are saying ?
Oner got Gamboa out of Cuba and put up his own cut to make gamboa a star? Gamboa is pretty loyal to stick with Oner. Why do some people hate Oner? Don't know much about Oner.
Arum is a snake but Gamboa already signed an extension and needs to sign another one for big fights like with Rios, and possibly Marquez and Pacquioa. It's too late for Gamboa, he's 30 and is stick with the two year extension he already signed.
If he took an advance, asked for an additional press conference in Miami which cost extra money to put on, and agreed to terms for the bout, then I do believe this is Gamboa's fault. And I really like watching the guy fight and I'm gonna miss watching him fight for the forseeable future. Arum will drag his career in the mud and it's a shame.
