Claiming it invested millions of dollars in the career of Yuriorkis Gamboa, boxing promoter Top Rank, Inc. sued the Cuban featherweight in federal court for breach of an agreement to face lightweight Brandon Rios on April 14th. A key allegation, that if true, would be very damaging to Gamboa, is Top Rank's claim to have made an advance payment to Gamboa when he agreed to the fight. Top Rank believes that after Gamboa took the advance, he was convinced by another promoter-- or multiple promoters-- to pull out of the Rios bout. However Top Rank's court filing did not name the alleged culprit(s). The complaint coyly alleged, "Why Gamboa decided to breach his contracts with Top Rank is irrelevant. Breach of contract does not require a bad intent. However, upon information, Top Rank believes one or more rival boxing promotion companies and unknown individuals associated with them are at the root of Gamboa's wrongful conduct. These 'poachers' see what everyone sees-- a gifted boxer platformed by Top Rank for superstardom-- and they want to unfairly capitalize on what Top Rank orchestrated and built. Upon information and belief, the rival promoters and others promised Gamboa that if he breaches his contract with Top Rank, they will promote his fights."

Or on the flip side Bob can just take it out of his pay for future events and then ultimately cash out on Yuri...
As if Bob (or any other promoter for that matter) hasn't pulled this stunt before.
Don't know how many defense lawyers would take Gamboa's case pro bono. Innocence is a hard case to prove on this one. I see jail sentence coming and a life of misery and pain. Oh well...
It wouldn't be "pro Bono", he has money to pay. It would most probably...if he's smart.... be on a contingency basis. But if the lawyer is smart, it will be on a fee basis. And as we've seen, Gamboa is NOT smart.
And someone mentioned "entrap". They have him under contract don't need to entrap......Top Rank didn't mention the advance as a cause for the suit but as an extra detail.
Oh well. I kept reading the speculation that it was about money but still havent heard anything about it being for more money.
How can they sue Gamboa if he himself is claiming he never signed a contract. We will see i guess
Youve just made a silly comment. They can sue anytime they want to, and for any reason. If it's a frivolous suit, the court will throw it out. Just because Gamboa says he didn't sign a contract is no bar against Top Rank suing.
What's wrong with this kid? I bet you he had people in his ear telling him all kinds of things saying he wasn't getting paid enough, that they are trying to destroy his career...
Damn I wanted to see this fight!!!
This really sounds just like Oscar. He has the worst reputation for doingthis since King is semi-retired.
I was sure that Top Rank would sue if they coudn't get Gamboa to honour his agreement. An open and shut case, although another nuisance for Top Rank
Uhmm, its pretty common for promoters to give advances to fighters. Even if the fighters dont know who they're fighting. Gamboa better give it back or fight someone!
Damn ! I wanna see gamboas career develop not fall after some stupid incident like this.
Just fight Rios and save your career Yuri !
lol it's too late now bro... I doubt Yuri could just come out now and be like "Okay Okay I'll fight Rios! Geez..." and everything be okay lol. Would be tight tho cuz now I wanna see Rios demolish Gamboa even more :grr:
Has Gamboa even made a statement regarding this incident? Or has he been quiet all this time?
He's too dumb to speak for himself! He'll let Golden faggets to defend him! Maybe Uncle Roger/ Floyd sr will be his spoke person!
Another Golden Boy Coup d etat! 1st They try steal Pac!! Then they ask Ortiz to file Bancruptcy, so he can jumps ship to GBP! Then try to steal Donaire, Now it's Gamboa's time!!
The Bad thing about Gamboa is that he's scheduled for his Biggest fight with TOPrank!! He cant say that TR's not doing their Job! It make it look like he Chickened out!!
Dumb move by Gamboa!!!
This was always going to litigation, I don't really care what Top Rank has to say as they are saying what they need to.
The funny thing is it doesn't matter who wins or loses in the end, because Gamboa loses even if he is going to win Top Rank will just settle then get it sealed and all you will see about it is a little blurb about it while Top Rank will have dragged his name through the mud for months.

Jail time? This is a civil case
If he took the advance and they have him agreeing it on email or contract, then he's screwed, but if TR just wired it into his account with a notification they had given him advance without his request, then TR have entrapped him(or tried too). The devil is in the detail here and we just don't know.
What we do know is Gamboa isn't fighting anytime soon unless him and TR come to some "agreement"

Gamboa's not going to jail over this. lol
But Yuri's career is in serious trouble....
it's possible that gamboa himself did not get the advance money but rather to someone in his management team. still, he only has himself to blame for having sneaky people to represent him.
but if he got the advance and acted the way he did, then he just ruined his boxing career.
