Marquez Article on Cotto vs FMJr.

On an interview by the El Nuevo Dia (PR News Paper) Juan Marquez advised Miguel to pressure FMJr., watch the counter punching, pressure FMJr., attack with combinations and watch and wait for the counterpunching. He also stated that FMJr. is a great counterpuncher and has an outstanding defense. “Cotto tiene que presionar a Mayweather”, sostuvo Márquez ayer, previo al pesaje oficial para el combate López-Salido II esta noche en el coliseo Roberto Clemente. “Presionar, tirar combinaciones de golpes y esperar la respuesta de Mayweather que es un contragolpeador muy bueno y que también defensivamente es muy bueno”. He went to say that the most dificult will be to connect on FMJr. because he protects himself with shoulders and elbows. That he uses anything but his dont consider him as a dirty fighter. Para Márquez, “Lo más difícil que tiene Mayweather es poderle pegar. Tiene una gran defensa, con hombros y codos se cubre que es muy difícil. Defensivamente hablando es de lo mejor. Usa sus artimañas pero no es sucio”. Marquez also stated that Cotto will give FMJr. problems that this will be a very dificult fight for both fighters. Márquez opinó que Cotto le dará problemas al estadounidense. “Es una pelea para los dos difícil. Lastly he closed by saying that FMJr. figths would be quite a bit more entretaining if he took more chances. If he takes more chances this could be a very interesting fight. But, if FMJr. takes chances.....Cotto, who is a great fighter, will capitalize on that and give (Cotto) the advantage. Nothing wrong with what JMM said BUT isnt't That everyones game plan vs Floyd ? pressure him? Attack him? Cottos Not the Bully type like Hatton or Ortiz hes not going to use his body to push up on Floyd .Knowing Cotto his game plan will be to Jab and try to go to the body then bounce out.the first 5 rounds of this fight will be boring and Floyd will be coming forward then in the later rounds Cotto will get tired and get whooped .he will get caught with a Counter right everytime he throws Combinations ,hes Flat footed and sits down on his punches hes a easy target .FLOYD wins TKO in 10 Agreed. Nope, not gonna happen, he's better at that than you!! Won't you agree?! I would agree on the intelligence aspect, for sure. Trying to "outsmart" Mayweather inside the ropes is about as intelligent as trying to debate Stephen Hawking on the subject of theorhetical physics. Countering him does work, though. The main problem is that most guys don't have the handspeed or reflexes to do it consistently. Judah did it about as good as it's ever been done for the first 4 rounds. Then he Judah'd it. :lol1: Pressure is key with Mayweather and it always has been. You'd think after the first Castillo fight guys would've learned it by now, but you still have idiots out there that try to outbox him (Oscar, Mosley), or they just put pressure on him but they do it like a retard (Ortiz, Hatton). Work that f*cking body already. Arms, shoulders, elbows - Take what you can get but for Christ's sake don't neglect it.

As much as I respect him - Marquez didn't exactly blow the lid off of anything with his analysis. It's no secret to anybody who has been watching Mayweather fight for more than 5 years that steady pressure,and an effective jab are tantamount to success against him. I honestly expected a better breakdown from someone like Marquez, a guy who I consider one of the 5 best technical fighters of the last 20 years, on this one. Not just "be smart, pressure him, and counter". Anybody can say that sh*t - including half of the 'tards that populate NSB, because I've seen them repeat it a million times before. The way to beat Floyd is there, people just get lured into Floyd's webb of confusion. If a fighter would understand that they're not going to be any good technically & take what Floyd offers they'd have a chance. Floyd offers shoulders, hips & fore arms, beat the $h!t outa those steadily for 8-9 rounds & watch as Floyd wears down, fighters just won't do it.

Only thing I disagree with him on was when he said Mayweather's defense isn't dirty. Mayweather can get dirty at times when he starts sticking the elbow and forearms into a guys throat. That sh*t isn't in any Boxing textbook I've ever heard of. Other than that, spot on analysis. Marquez's Boxing IQ rivals Mayweather's own.

Sometimes he did but Oscar was in that fight all the way to the 10th, at least, it was super close. Floyd really did not nullify the jab throughout. I saw him missing a lot, gettin tagged and running a lot and answering with one punch. I saw an older Oscar fail to use his jab, without it being exactly nullified. There were just a few rounds he abandoned it all together. I say Cotto's heavy hands behind that jab, and the way he double and triples it throughout the fight, is better than Oscars. :lol1: :lol1:

Cotto needs to stand his ground, not rush in fighting aggressively and try to do the countering instead of the other way around. If nothing happens and the crowd starts booing, ignore it. Of course, Floyd's sneaky potshots will eventually find their targets and Cotto would try to get back, get frustrated and careless. Wrong move. Just be patient, insist on Floyd to come in and fight. Good analygy i forgot about Cottos patience and although thats something i've dislike about Cotto, it could help him in this fight. I just don't think Cotto hits hard enough to bother Floyd upstairs. But if Cotto has a good body attack in plan he will give Floyd trouble. Did you start watching boxing yesterday? Patience is a skill that keeps a boxer level headed, specially against a mind master like Mayweather. Cotto doesn't hit hard enough? If cotto has a good body attack in his plan? I'm speechless.
