I dont think he's scared like everyone is saying. He hasn't even signed the contract. This whole thing looks like a ploy to get him to fight. I mean if I was him and I was looking to switch promoters I wouldn't want to jump into a fight right away either. I dont know where I read it but someone on this board said they're trying to get him to sign for an additional 5 years to take the Rios fight. Thats BS. If he doesn't want to be with Top Rank anymore and his contract is expiring, he should have the freedom to choose with whom he wants to be promoted. Dont you think?
Or do you think this vicious, undefeated, very good fighter is shamelessly and publicly fearing and avoiding Rios?
Actually, Salas walked away. Oner didn't want to cough up a higher % to pay Carlos Gamboa (dad), which takes part in training Yuri. Before the the PDL fight Salas had a certain amount he felt he was going to make. Afterwards he comes to find his purse, pretty much slashed in half.
Very interesting.
Oner has been called a lot of things, mostly negative, and it would appear the terms 'greedy' and 'currupt' are fairly accurate. I'm fine with promoters and/or managers pushing for certain fights, but the moment they try to get involved with the actual fight preparations is the moment they have to be put in their place. Glad to see Yuri standing his ground on this.

I don't think Gamboa is scared, but I do think his team is very cautions..Gamboa never fought at 135lb,why would his first fight there be against the best fighter there??Seems more like Gamboa being smart rather then him being scared...
What's even more f#cked up is that "La Amenaza" (Salas) left Danny Green to come train Gamboa at Oner's request. Salas was making hefty amounts with Green and could have said no, but he saw potential in Gamboa made the business decision to leave Green.
I put this clip up a few years back, never thought I would need to reference it lol:

I guess that's life. We make decisions and have to live by them. I'm glad Ismael is working with Rigo now. Nice to "keep it in the family."
And thanks for the video link. It's very interesting to see how things were not too long ago.
Very interesting! Thanks for the info.
So, basically, it was indeed Oner's doing. It just didn't go down the way I imagined it might have. I envisioned Oner pushing Ismael out to make room for the big name, Steward. Instead, Oner essentially dared Salas to leave by slashing his paycheck. No sane person could expect Ismael to stay on after a move like that.
Yea bro, anytime my man. Salas by no means is holding grudges though. He respects Gamboa and his family and is continuing his career training other talents.

The decision to hire a high-profile trainer made sense at first glance, but getting rid of a man that Gamboa had strong ties with, and was doing a good job, seemed strange. I'm certain Oner made the move; I just wonder what Yuri had to say about it.

It was definitely a business move for promotional reasons. Steward isn't or wasn't going to do much with Gamboa. Salas and Gamboa besides being fellow 'ex-employees' are great friends. I called Salas a couple days ago, he just had arrived from Germany back to Miami. After some small talk, I asked him what he felt about the whole Gamboa/Rios mayhem. He admited to not having ties with Gamboa so he wasnt too sure, but didn't leave out 'scum' play by Oner.

Getting the biggest payday, the fight he wanted since he called out Rios, and he's not scared now making excuses? He needs to stay off youtube. Must've watched Rios highlights and pooped a brick.
I believe you, bro.
Bob Arum gets bashed a lot, and often for good reason, but Oner is possibly in a class of his own. I rolled my eyes when I first read that he would be representing Gamboa, Solis and Lara. Oner's sleaziness is the stuff of legend. It comes as no surprise that Oner initially hung his hat on Solis. There's more prestige and potential money with the heavies. Once it became apparent that Yuri was the rising star, Oner pulled all the stops to keep him.
What do you think about Ismael being replaced with Manny Steward? My bet is that Oner pulled that one without Gamboa's consent. Did you read the article I posted about Steward?

Yes I did, Steward esta mareado. It's ridiculous.
Oner is scum. It's not an overstatement and when you see 'Oner' bashing online is not without cause. El tipo es mierda. Salas right after being removed as Gamboa's trainer showed me 'proof' on what a piece of garbage this guy is. You don't f#ck around with a man's money. I had a sit down with Gamboa once and he expressed his dislike for Oner too. Let's just say Gamboa felt then that Oner was only focused on Odlanier Solis and only had plans for la sombra.

He just signed a 2 year extension
But the problem isnt with top rank anyway
That's right the problem is with the other promoter who has an interest in him
Gamboa afraid of Rios? In my best "Tony Montana" voice, "No. Fuck no...."
Brandon is one tough hombre, but there's no reason whatsoever why Yuri would fear him. All this talk about cowardice comes from immature (both literally and figuratively) "fans."
There is precious little evidence, but it's slowly beginning to appear that Gamboa has an issue with his co-promoter Ahmet Oner, not Bob Arum or Top Rank. I hope we get some solid answers soon.

...I feel that gamboa will shoulder a good amount of the blame if this fight isn't met.
That TR media-machine will spark that. They're excellent at controlling perception.
Most people will never look very deeply into an issue. They either blame what's most convenient, or blame whomever the crowd is pointing to. Indeed, if this fight falls through, Gamboa will get the blame.
Point taken. I'd say you don't see egotistical, world-class, fighters that are scared of one another. Like I don't believe Rios is scared of Gamboa, Floyd is scared of Manny or vice-versa, Bradley is scared of Khan, Khan scared of Prescott, I never thought Haye was scared of K2, or Bernard was scared of Chad, and the list goes on.
Agreed. :fing02:
I have to admit, it gets on my nerves when people claim "so-and-so" is afraid of "so-and-so." I tend to instinctively tune them out, as if anyone who would say that can't possibly know what they're taking about. lol

I dont think Gamboa is scared. Top Rank is pressuring him. Your thoughts? | BoxingScene Community
