Did you guys know that Gamboa walk around weight is +150lb when he actually fights at 126lb? As a matter of fact, he is weighing between 152 and 155lb right now and looking ripped. More impressively, from the weigh-in to fight night he usually gains about 12-15lb. In some of his most important fights he arrived in the ring at 140lb, including against Salido (for a 126lb man this is an 11% increase, which is HUGE). That's what I call losing weight for a weigh-in...
I don't know why some boxers can do this with more ease than others but since Rios is not ripped at all, I have some difficulties with the "he is too big for 135lb and will be too weak" excuse. I really like Rios and I appreciate the fact that he hired a nutritionist this time, because IMO he should be doing 135lb just fine without killing himself by eating well and losing fat like most boxers do. I think he's had difficulties making weight in his last few fights only because of his diet but he has no one else to blame than himself. If you keep a high fat percentage and try to lose all your extra weight too late you'll be just burning muscle as well. Add that to not being able to eat or drink water, and you have a weak fighter. My question is, what is Rios real everyday weight?
i just watched a rios interview with sechbak and he said he weighing around 150 right now so what its up with all these excuses? gamboa drops almost 40 pounds to make featherweight and i nver heard him make excuses and rios has to drop 20 pounds and he is weigh drained and this and that, get some disipline in your life and stop making excuses
Montiel actually outweighed Donaire in the ring. Look it up. Montiel weighed 134 pounds on fight night and Donaire weighed around 126.
Thank you for this. I understand. But Montiel is a career flyweight is he not?
To answer a few questions I received.
I don't live in Miami but I go there often, I spend a few months/year there. And I know about Gamboa's weight because:
- I have friends who promote a few fighters in Miami and they know Gamboa well, they told me.
- When Gamboa was arrested the police weighed him at 160lb.
- There is a latino boxing forum where most members are Cuban and some people from his entourage over there told us that he was weighing over 150lb just last week.
Rios is too big for teh weight bro, he's about 170ish between fights. He kills himself to make the weight.
As for his body type, his genetics are a beautiful thing. He will never be ripped, ever, thats just now how his genes are. Even with a nutritionist you will notice problems in making weight for him. THere's a reason this is his last fight at 140, they want to 'experiment' and see if thigns are in fact easier with a NEW nutritionist, but he had one previously.
Anybody can be ripped if they put the effort into it. Rios loves his food and does not put 100% into his diet/regime. If he trained like a mad man and ate great foods he would be ripped like any other boxer.
Montiel actually outweighed Donaire in the ring. Look it up. Montiel weighed 134 pounds on fight night and Donaire weighed around 126.
but.....BUT.......BUT
Donaire is a MONSTER!!!!
Yea I get the same feeling. But I'm pretty sure he had a nutritionist before the Murray fight. I remember seeing one of Ellies videos where he is talking to Nestor sayin he can't believe Rios has gone this far without a nutritionist. Video was from a while ago too.
that would be incorrect
he had someone give him a diet plan but that's about it. He ate what the team ate in while in Mexico and came back early to do his meds etc
So what were you doing then?
Really you feel I was arguing for Gamboa being a p4p? Wow. Read the comments in the thread, you'll be amazed how many answers you find.. :fing02:
Because unlike Donaire, Gamboa didnt destroy 2 P4P ranked fighters :D
Who? Darchinyan, or the smaller Montiel? Either way I wasn't making a case for Gamboa being p4p.
How is it unfair? Donaire doesn't control where he gets placed on the p4p list.
My comparison is that people rip donaire for being a big guy in a small weight class with a 140 walk around weight. Now Gamboa is like 10-15 pounds heavier at 126..... he's the exact same thing then by people's perspective.... big guy in a small weight class.
I'll tell you why.
The the too big for '115' Donaire moves to bantam then challenges Montiel and Narvaez both career fly/superflyweights. People tend to bash Nonito because of this.
If Gamboa moves up to 130, 135 or jr welter and starts fighting the Rafael Marquez's of the world, then you have a case. Gamboa UNLIKE Donaire is moving up and facing an already too large for his class giant in Rios.
Yea but unlike Donaire, Gamboa didn't get shot up to top 5 p4p. Regardless, your comparison is unfair.

You made valid points, other then the fight HOW DO YOU KNOW GAMBOA'S WALK AROUND WEIGH? any pics, sources or video footage?
Rios is just as big if not BIGGER then Ortiz
Lmao @ Inspector Gadget
This is what I was saying awhile ago. Gamboa is not as small as some people make him out to be. He is really just moving up 1 weightclass. Having the fight at 135 might hurt Rios more so than it will hurt Gamboa
could very well be the case right here specially if what the op said is true... Gamboa always looked small to me tho but perhaps he's bigger than I thought.
This imo makes the bout even more interesting.
