Will this fight give the division a Ring/lineal champion? If not who does the winner need to fight for The Ring or the lineal title to be on the line? I know it has to be between the #1 and #2 or in some cases #1 and #3.
#2 is Canelo, Floyd ain't rated at all, so will Floyd have to beat Cotto and then Canelo to become JMW lineal champion, or win The Ring Title, or both?
If i'm not mistaken, the last champion at 154 was Winky Wright, a long ass time ago. Now it's vacant I guess.
So can Floyd and Cotto fight for it or what? Some one explain this to me.
if winner fought Canelo, Ring would put their belt up
btw, kinda off topic, but what happened to Dzinziruk?
he's done nothing since Martinez loss at 160
he still have a strap at 154?
Do the real fans even care about rankings and belts!?
I think we all care about a good fight, and even fight, good names, I could care less that Cotto has a belt or Floyd or anyone. Let me see the good fights.
Um well Cotto fans better not care about rankings and belts since their boy hasn't fought a top 10 ranked fighter in 2 years. Real boxing fans? Of course we care, top 10=recognized as of the best in your division. Titles? If we're talking about Ring and Lineal titles, which Cotto has neither of in any of the 3 weight classes he's campaigned in, hell yeah I care. What causal fan even knows about rankings and ring/lineal titles? That's stuff that only hardcore boxing fans discuss. You're not gonna hear Joe around the corner, talk about the WBC or The Ring rankings. Causal fans have that mentality like "I just wanna see a good fight".
I am getting the impression that the majority of people in here think that The Ring belt is synonymous with the "lineal champ", which is not the case.
Yeah, two different titles.

according to u cotto is a bum so????? why would a ring magazine award a championship with a fraud and a bum
Not that simple. The ring has been known to make exceptions for big name fighters.
You can read the rules on what hitting a women can get you, but those rules didn't exactly apply to Floyd didn't they? Alright then.
Ring doesnt make exceptions to its rules - the rules say that sometimes a fight bt 1 and 3 is for the championship
Well OP, in it's simplest form, the only way I think mayweather could win the Ring title if he beat Cotto is if Cotto already had it. Since he doesnt, then he'd have to fight the number 2 after.
If the Ring gives him the title anyway, they're bullshiiting
After reading this thread and thinking about it, if all goes to plan, Mayweather-Alvarez has a huge chance of happening.
If Mayweather beats Cotto, and Alvarez beats K-9 (Is he the IBF Champion?) then next year, if they were to fight at 154 it would be for the Undisputied/Lineal Title.
And I can't see Mayweather, Alvarez or GBP not jumping at that idea.
Shame really, I was hoping for Martinez.
But after reading this, if all goes to plan, Mayweather will definitely fight Alvarez.
Sounds legit and like a plan Floyd would go for because he can make the most money off of these guys out of anyone other than Pac.
If Floyd goes about this the right way, he can end up being a 6 divisional champion, and have 5 Ring/4 Lineal titles. I hope this is how he finishes his career. Forget Pacquiao, Martinez is the better fighter.
Read the Ring Magazine's rules to become the Ring champion and fight out your answer rather simply.

Really? I would think Canelo stays right where he's at and Cotto moves down two spots. Because you also have to think about Canelo's potential win on May 5th. Why would he be moved down to make way for a loser, when he just won? I say he keeps his spot, especially if he beats a top JMW.
That's true.
All depends on how badly Cotto loses and how The Ring change their rankings.
Sometimes instances they would move Cotto to #2 and in others they would move him to #3.
But to be honest to you since you highlighted the Canelo thing I imagine they would move Cotto down to #3 were he to lose to Mayweather as long as Canelo wins in impressive fashion aswell.
So if that were to happen then yes Mayweather-Alvarez would be for The Ring title.
So he just can't simply become The Ring champion by fighting Canelo who's rated #2, after beating Cotto and becoming #1 of course?
And if Canelo fights K9 for the IBF and wins, then Canelo would be the WBC/IBF champ, while Floyd would be the WBA champ, and then Floyd fights Canelo and wins, then he'd be both The Ring and Lineal champion of 154 right?
Correct. Because Floyd would be the WBC/WBA/IBF/RING Champ.
I'm not sure, but strangely enough I think if he were to rematch Cotto he would be The Ring Champion :lol1:
Assuming Mayweather would take Cotto's #1 spot and Cotto would move down to #2.
If memory serves me correctly I think that's what happened with Castillo at Lightweight.
