I think there's a decent chance, Mayweather is throwing out the Canelo name so that when he announces Cotto it looks better. It could very well be Canelo, but I don't think we should close the door on it being Cotto. Imo the Cotto matchup isn't much better as Mayweather will beat him almost as badly as he would Canelo.
With that said, I admit I will buy either PPV and enjoy the event. Who does everyone think will be next? We should be finding out the official truth soon, so lets see who guesses right beforehand! Poll to follow, please discuss! :boxing::boxing:

Looks like this guy was correct!
Either way, and I think how it will affect Canelo is very debatable. Looking forward to this next chapter for the boxing elite. One things for sure it will give all of us something to yap about.
True, it will give everyone something to discuss no matter what happen or how one feels because there will be people who don't feel the same way.
The post before, I pretty much agree if he looks decent that is better than most guys look against Floyd and that will make people feel differently about his level. It would definetly be huge for his career if he could pull that off.
I think looking for the big punch would get him embarrassed though, if that happens people will be down on Canelo a bit but that can get overcome as there isn't much shame in getting beat by Floyd even badly. Also that doesn't have to be a bad outcome for Canelo personally either because it could show him what a truly top shelf guy can do and really spur him to improve himself.
Either way the aftermath would be interesting and give people much to talk about for a good while.
I think all Canelo has to do to be minted. Is look nearly as decent as Ortiz did when he was getting outboxed by Mayweather. While Mayweather was fully fully winning those rounds for the most part, if Canelo can even look like he's in the right building. The attention and media coverage he'd get from a Mayweather fight would be tremendous for his career.
He just needs to be sure not to get knocked out of the ropes in the first 6 rounds or trip on his own feet due to getting his ears boxed off. If I'm on team Canelo... I say go for this fight with the intention of hoping to land a big punch but more than anything else not embarrass myself and become a bigger attraction. Huge risk in a move like this, but imo well weighted risk.

IF he looks like he belongs in the ring with Mayweather he doesn't even need to win, he is minted.
IF he get humiliated on the biggest stage of his career, tough to say how he will respond, that kind of mental hit can be hard to overcome for a fighter.
To me if you are GBP you don't take that risk with a Canelo who appears to be their future meal ticket unless there is a reason.

If Canelo loses to Mayweather, someone everyone thinks is a bit too experienced for Canelo right now anyway.. He will not lose a step in his career. He'll only become more popular and a bigger PPV draw. Fighting Mayweather would likely be good for Canelo's career imo win, lose or draw.
It would only be really bad if Mayweather makes a complete and utter mockery of Canelo in the ring. If it's just a dominant decision or even a late knockout however? I think it's still good for Canelo's career.

Per the poll right now, if Mayweather names Cotto. Boxingscene will not have been outfoxed on this announcement. Excited to hear if we're correct.
Well I don't know who that source was that said Canelo was the guy, it looked like it was linked to the Bradley report and who really has good sources with both camps like that.
Will be interesting to see who it is, probably more interesting than the fight itself.
It makes sense if they believe Canelo has peaked or has really bought into his hype thus is not really trying to improve anymore. Then it really doesn't matter if he loses here to Floyd or not and infact that might be one of the few ways to get him back on track, risky as he could completely fall apart but it could also spur improvement.
Another possibility is Canelo has bought the hype and thinks he is ready, GBP has to try and keep him happy as he is their most obvious star of the future so they could between a rock and a hard place.
Still there is no way they want that right now unless something is awry.

Makes no sense for GBP to give Canelo a guaranteed L.

I am with you completely.
I will say Cotto just because that is what I said before and I still find it hard to believe GBP would want Floyd-Canelo to happen right now.
