I used to be of the mindset that Berto if he decided to leave Tony Morgan should seek out a coach that would help him improve defensively. I have come to realize that will never be who Berto is. For that reason I think Freddie Roach would be the guy that could have improved Berto's game. Give Freddie Roach a fighter with good hand speed and pop and you typically have success. I think Freddie would have Berto using his offence smarter and overwhelming opponents. Some ofR oach's pupils get criticised for lack of defense but they for the most part offensive whirlwinds. It may be too late for Berto to change who he is but I think Freddie would have had people feeling differently about him at this stage. Thoughts?Game
Between all these trainers mentioned. I believe Roach would be the better choice. Anne Wolf would get Berto KO'd, Steward will slow him down and Mayweather's will try to make him a counter puncher, which is not Berto's best attribute. Even though Roach is not a defensive coach, his best defense is his explosive offense, which is somewhat similar to Berto's style except for the speed.
Thats kinda what I'm getting at

And I dont think Berto has the stamina to fight that Freddie Roach style.
Maybe not but I still think he has better stamina if he doesn't constantly load up. I'm not saying he has to fight the exact style that Pac and Khan fight. I think Freddie can effectively put plans in place to effectively use Berto's aggression. I don't see anyone being able to mold Berto to being very defensively responsible. Making him smarter offensively seems more realistic in my opinion.
Berto needs someone to help his with his defense...and Roach obviously does not teach nor know a damn thing about defense........ever see one of his fights?

roach fighters also need world class footspeed and they need to be able to use it for 12 rounds
two things berto cant do.
i think manny steward would teach him how to handle the pace better by staying off of his toes when he doesnt need to and try and conserve his energy
but h
he'd throw less flurries and focus on getting the distance to land his hard punches (berto is a very underrated puncher. if you put a reyes glove on him and he hits a WW on the chin with his best uppercut they are getting rocked.)
unfortunately for berto he's lacking enough in my opinion to be beyond major help at this stage in his career:
he cant coast and use his handspeed to box and win rounds )
he cant fight inside consistently, he just looks to weather the storm and land flurries of his own
he still paws his jab
and he sells his body out in the early to middle rounds to produce his offense, leading to him slowing down the stretch
berto's an odd guy. he's a beast. back in the day he had some of the fastest hands in boxing. and he's still got tons of flaws.
All excellent points. I think Freddie would be able to use what Berto's strengths are to help cover the flaws. You are right about the foot work though. I think is someone one could get Berto to stop squaring up all the time and actually exploring other avenues we might be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I think he he gasses out due to throwing every shot with full force even with no openings. I wish he would mix it up more and catch someone with one of those shots when they were not prepared.

If Berto had Floyd Sr that would be perfect for his style..sharpen his counters and get hit less while being more reserve with his offense
See this is where I was. Now from what I know of Berto I see him working with Sr and then going back to what he always done. Thats why I see Roach being a good fit for his skill set. Instead of throwing hard when there are no openings Roach would have him set up his shots. Berto doesnt seem interested in defense and I dont think a defensive coach will change that.
I agree with all these post, in Berto I see a guy that has potential but with his age u have to wonder is he set in his ways but at the same time u know he has the potential to add to his arsenal.

Heck he could even go with Jeff and it would be better then Roach.

I think that would be a bad idea. He would have to take a lot of punishment fighting her style and his chin has been questioned in the past.

lol hell yeah i love anne wolf, can't wait to see kirkland again such an exciting fighter with her in his corner. :boxing:
