“If Sergio Martinez can make 150, let’s make the fight happen,” said pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather in a Yahoo Sports story on Wednesday.
“Like I said, there are no excuses. I’m a little different from other guys. He’s got a very, very impressive style. But like I said before, my main focus is a Manny Pacquiao fight.”
Kevin Iole, the writer for Yahoo Sports, suggested in his piece that “Martinez would have to abandon a planned March 17 fight with Matthew Macklin, but given the money involved in a Mayweather fight, that would not be an issue.”
Today in a statement to Boxing Insider, Sergio Martinez responded to Floyd Mayweather.
“I’m focused 100% on Matthew Macklin, and I’m not interested in anything else. Floyd had enough time to reach a deal. Anyway, if he wants the fight he knows who he has to speak with. I said 150 and I will keep my promise. The same way I ask Hopkins and Ward a catch-weight, I don’t have problems in fighting at Jr. Middleweight.Talk is cheap. Fight or shut up. November would be a good month. I would have enough time to reach 150 and you could be recovered from your holidays.”
Martinez fulfilling an obligation to his March 17 fight at Madison Square Garden isn’t a surprise. Contracts are signed, pressers have happened, and Sergio is now entrenched in a hard training camp in Oxnard, CA. If he were to cancel the fight with Macklin, it could be detrimental to his preparation for Floyd Mayweather.
A November date makes sense. As Sergio points out, it will give him ample time to properly drop down to 150 lb., something that needs to be done carefully.
There will be some who ask why Sergio wouldn’t fight both Matthew Macklin and Floyd Mayweather…first Macklin in March, and Mayweather in May. Well, in this scenario the fights would be only 7 weeks apart. That’s unrealistic.
At the same time, Floyd Mayweather cannot be faulted here either. He did say he would fight Sergio Martinez on May 5. There’s no guarantee that Floyd will even fight again in 2012 after that.
Let’s hope each take care of business in their respective upcoming bouts, and make it a priority to fight each other next.
This fight would be good for both participants. Mayweather will get major props for fighting a bigger opponent, and Martinez can stop complaining about everyone ducking him. It would be the best of both worlds, if they can just agree on a catchweight and Martinez doesn't have a problem meeting it.
Nah 154 is fair although it would be great if it went to 160 but not complaining be unfair on Floyd then.Im sure if Sergio asks they can get this done for 154
Sergio wouldn't have any leverage at negotiations with Pac or Floyd.
In any case, Floyd would get mad props for taking this fight ...:boxing:

That's what I'm hoping for.

Comparison point was {at that time} that Floyd was picking on smaller guys in JMM. But how can that hold true if Pac did the same thing and received no criticism ..
Sergio is targeting smaller guys because he will have a size advantage and to make some cash... Anyone trying to dispute that reality, is in a twilight zone.
Floyd can pick on smaller guys all he wants if he's willing to go down to fight them...
Like Martinez is
Boxing....
Boxing is a money business so I dont blame Sergio for going after the money pit on Pac and FMJ. Money talks BS walks and that is the bottom line. Yes, better fights and challenges are out for Maravilla at his weight class and higher but the money is under him not on the top of his division so who is the dumb?? Maravilla isnt!
:bottle:
.............Floyd didn't go down to Lightweight or Jr Welterweight to fight Marquez
Martinez is willing to go down to 150!
it's not the same thing at all
your comparison and points are invalid

This kid is on a roll.
The Floyd/Marquez fight was basically at a catchweight of 146 lol, as it wouldve been even worst if MArquez came in at 146.
If Floyd even went down to 140 to fight Marquez he wouldve gotten full credit from me.
smh trolls get passes but when posting news im threatened

No he's not!!! ... He's chasing after that dollar with smaller guys.
Floyd caught hell for fighting JMM who is naturally smaller, Pac caught no flak at all for fighting JMM, and Sergio is running around chasing Pac & Floyd like a two-dollar whore, instead of going after the guys in his division and higher.
I would have a little more respect if Sergio was targeting above his weight class, but not below ....
What? The bold is such a lie. Not only was it viewed as an obvious cherrypick, 90% of smart people thought Marquez beat his a$$!

You're comparing apples and oranges though. Martinez is willing to go down to a weight that might be extremely hard and uncomfortable for him to make. He's taking away his one true advantage which is size to face these guys. If Floyd would have fought JMM at 140 or even at 138 he wouldn't have caught as much flak -if any- in his fight against JMM.
If Martinez would be asking Floyd or Pac to meet him at 157 or higher then yes your point would be valid.
And, Pac did get some flak for JMM, maybe not as much as Floyd but he got some.

I'm now against Martinez vs. Pacquiao, as Pacquiao now has his work cut out for him and didn't perform well in his last two performances, so I say kill that fight. I'm not at all against Mayweather-Martinez, I'd like to note that Martinez entered the ring weighing 166 against Barker, 2 pounds more than Ortiz weighed against Mayweather and mind you...that was at MW. At 154, I would expect him to come in less than that. As I've been saying Martinez isn't that big and anyone who enters the ring weighing 166 should not be considering 168. At 154 we have great fight, one in which Martinez would be challenging himself as well.
lol..banstick it was reported here
Doesn't matter where it was reported, all news stories must contain links. If this was a story quote for quote posted here, it shouldn't be reposted.

154 sounds like the perfect weight, I do believe Floyd could overcome Sergio at 160 but that would be a tough tough task.
154, I'm with you. I think 160 would really be pushing it for Floyd. But the historical significance would be great.
Right. He hasn't fought at welter in a decade and he's been as high as 160.

I want nothing short of 154, I guess Jros was right in that Floyd would go with 150 especially if Martinez is asking for it, to me, it's a dead fight at 150 though.

I think floyd has no choice but to give into the 50/50 split. Who else would be a possible match? If the pacman fight does not go through pac already chose cotto for plan b. He said he doesn't know who guerro is and said camelo is not ready yet. So who else is there.
