Peter Quillin is a fine young fighter. But Giovanni Lorenzo is also an excellent fighter and he deserves a shot at an HBO fight more than Quillin does. Though Quillin is undefeated, he’s also relatively untested. Giovanni has taken the tough fights (four major bouts in his opponent’s backyards, three outside the country) while they were all in there prime and shown that he is a world-class fighter.
Matthew Macklin is a great example of a fighter who took tough fights and lost but got rewarded for his good effort. When Lorenzo fought Felix Sturm in Sturms hometown Cologne for the WBA. Giovanni threw more punches than Sturm, landed about the same total amount and had a huge edge in power punches yet not one judge gave him the fight.
When he lost a split decision to Sebastian Sylvester for the IBF crown in Sylvester’s hometown in Germany (one American judge had it for us, two European judges for Sylvester) or when he fought interim WBA Champ Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam in Le Cannet, France N'Dam's home town and knocked him through the ropes and out of the ring, only to have N’Jikam get aided in getting up by a photographer and a WBA judge (that’s generally an automatic DQ – but not in France apparently, see YouTube link to round five below). It is clear Lorenzo won by KO.
"N'Dam Lorenzo round 5"
I think the only true way to compare Giovanni and Peter Quillin (since Quillin is relatively untested) is by looking at how they did against their two common opponents – Dionisio Miranda and Dennis Sharpe. Giovanni blazed Miranda out in two rounds with one wicked right hand. Quillin struggled to a ten round close decision win over Miranda and was almost knocked out in the seventh round. Both men stopped Sharpe, though Giovanni did it in one round when Sharpe was still an undefeated prospect, while Quillin took four rounds and Sharpe had lost five in a row at that point.
Bottom line, Giovanni is the more battle-tested fighter and a much tougher test for Andy Lee than Peter Quillin would be. Let’s have Quillin travel to Australia to fight Daniel Geale, or to Russia to fight Dmitriy Pirog or Germany and fight Golvoken and see how he does before he gets a big fight on HBO. Giovanni’s earned his chance.
Quillin vs. Lee
You can't script this fight any better. Hometown kid vs. Irish kid on St. Patrick's Day. Freddie Roach vs. Emmanuel Steward. DiBella vs. Golden Boy. East Coast vs. West Coast. This is the most explosive fight of the year. Can't wait.
The N'dam fight was the most interesting fight in Lorenzo's career, After the Knockdown in the 5th, N'Dam ran the rest of the fight, so much by the 11 & 12 he didn't even land any effective punches,They score the 12 round 10-8 for N'Dam . This was so egregious that the the WBA supervisor wrote in his report that the 12 round was the worst scored round he had ever wittnessed and the scores of the fight were no reflection of how the fight was, by the 11th round the crowd was on thier feet booing N'Dam, In the 12th round, The crowd was chanting Lorenzo! Lorenzo! Lorenzo! N'Dam hasn't been the same since, he hasn't fought since either, (coming up on a year) he was busted up pretty good. One French reporter told Lorenzo that the French hate N'Dam because he doesn't fight he runs. I feel sorry for that guy, No Love!
I originally heard the N'Dam fight was a robbery, but I ended up watching it and I didn't really see it the way. The knock down thing didn't bother me much because they barely touched him and N'Dam was obviously able to get up himself. It didn't effect the course of the fight at all.
Because Lou DiBella would much rather have Lee in a fight he knows he can win, so he can set up Sergio Martinez next fight against yep, you guessed it - andy lee.
Maybe, but I get the feeling he doesn't really want Lee fighting Martinez. It probably would have happened by now if he did. Lee could easily go the John Duddy route fighting lesser opposition while still selling a ton of tickets. Maybe get him a title shot against Geale or Chavez this year.
Oh Lorenzo doesnt deserve to be on HBO but McEwan after getting KO'd by Lee does, That is hilarious, I mean he got KO'd and in his next fight he's on HBO, LMAO
That fight was a 12 round draw on all 3 scorecards, except for a point taken away from Lorenzo for a headbutt that never landed, It would officially been a draw,(In Marquez promoters venue) so I dont know what fight you were watching or remember but it was very close, After the fight Marquez quoted Lorenzo as the hardest puncher he had ever faced. That was teh closest fight Lorenzo was ever in, the rest were robberies,
Quillin would have been KO'd by Raul, Lorenzo beat Marquez, but that fight was in Marquez promoters home court too, Lorenzo is a warrior, never been down or stopped, He is right in front of you and comes to fight, He doesn't cry about th emoney, he doesn't back out of fights, and he doesn't fake injuries, he is a real fighter, he fights
you do realize some people have actually seen these fights so you can't claim robbery on every single one because i saw that fight and he lost.

Quillin is much hype and untested, Thats a fact, Giovanni Lorenzo would be undefeated too if he fought the same figherts Quillin did, so would Lee, Quillin still needs to prove himself, He clearly has a suspect chin. Shown in the Miranda fight, and that can not be improved you ar eborn with a chin. Fight someone my man, and then you have something to talk about, Right now, he has nothing to talk about.
CompuBox numbers Sturm - Lorenzo
Punches Landed / Thrown
Total Punches Jabs Power Punches
Sturm 198 / 449 129 / 296 69 / 153
Lorenzo 193 / 1070 22 / 519 171 / 551
Lorenzo clearly out punched Sturm in power punches (by over 100) equal in jabs, how does Sturm get the victory? we all know the answer to that question, "The fight was in Germany in his hometown for the WBA.
Lorenzo threw 1070 in the fight to only 449 by Sturm.
Maklin got his shot at Sergio Martinez with the same punch output, The bottom line is Lorenzo comes to fight.
