I want to know what it takes to become a truly skilled pro boxer???
I have been recreationaly boxing for few years and now that I met Tony Pep I have seriously uped my training from 2-3 times a week to everyday this past weeks as well as quiting my job to focus on boxing and I was wondering how much do pro boxers sparr to become successful???
Emanuel Steward talked on video about, how Evander Holyfield doesn't like to spar. When he was training Evander for his bout against Bowe, Manny had to emulate Bowe's movements while holding the pads.
I sparred with Jean once when he was still an amateur, after he had been to the Olympics...fast hands...
I got to spar with him as well, he was very fast and moved in an awkward way. I never got to spar with Joel Julio but I did spar one of his guys from Colombia that was at the gym and he gave me a good lesson in speed and movement.
I'm older now so I can't go like I used to but it's fun just to be in there with those guys.
Solis hitting the mitts with Pedro Diaz was like hearing 2x4's break, that dude has some serious power.
Ive trained with world champions who all they did was spar...been with others who hardly ever sparred...one top elite champion used to only spar lightly, no really hard contact...I know two future hall of famers who were the opposite, one used to spar almost every day, one hardly ever sparred...I know another two time champ who used to spar the day before his fights...so, basically, there is no exact formula...depends on the fighter and the trainer...as far as boxing internationally, as an amateur, you have to be chosen to do so by your country's boxing group..in the USA it is USABoxing in Colorado...u need to advance to national comp first...no one with 7 bouts is geting picked, though...gotta put the time in...
I worked with Jean Pascal, Oleander Solis when they were being trained by Pedro Diaz here in Ft Lauderdale.
Pascal hardly sparred at all and when he did it wasn't that hard.
I also trained with Joel Julio and he sparred a lot, like almost every day and went hard.
So your right, it just depends. I have read that Julio Cesar Chavez Sr sparred incredibly hard and for like 20 rounds at a time.

It depends on the trainer and his preference. In my gym I see pro's spar 2-4 times per week.
Guys like Julio Cesar Chavez sparred a lot. Some fighters don't spar as much.
Most of the pro's I have seen in my gym go for about 2-3 per week max. I personally don't think you should be sparring everyday when training for a fight, that wouldn't be wise.
More you spar the more chances of cuts and injuries. Plus you need time for conditioning and working technique, game plan and hitting the apparatus.
Sparring usually takes place in the middle of training camp when things really heat up. In the last two weeks you don't spar and you don't even hit the heavy bag with a lot of trainers. The key is to peak right on fight night.
its very diffrent. old school trainers like there fighters sparring on a daily basis (or very close to it). then there are others who spar far less, it also depends on how rough the sparring is.
im an amateur, but i spar about 3 times a week. sometimes more sometimes less, but usually 3 times. i go quite a few rounds each session though, monday i sparred 8 rounds straight with 3 diffrent ppl which is quite alot for an amateur.
i always look to spar as much as possible though. sparring, shadowboxing, jumrope and double end bag is hard/impossible to do to much of imo.

Im an amature boxer but i spare with the pros so it depends, one of the pros from my gym fights 10 rounds, so he normally spars 3 times a week .. he starts sparring 5 or 6 rounds and by the time hes finishing camp he spares 11 to 13 rounds !
When they train for a fight they do about 140-150 rounds of sparring over the course of 5 weeks. Training camps last 8 weeks but they don't spar the first 2 weeks and the last week.
