Top Rank head Bob Arum tossed 4 names into the hat. Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Lamont Peterson, and Timothy Bradley. Which of these four guys deserves the multiple million dollar payday the most? Each fighter makes a pretty strong case, so let's take a look at each.
Miguel Cotto - No doubt one of the classiest guys in the sport. He feels that the gloves used against him in the first fight worn by Antonio Margarito were loaded. His face was busted up, blood shooting out of his mouth, it was ugly. Cotto got his revenge by soundly defeating Margarito in the rematch. He's a true warrior and reps the sport well. Cotto definitely is worthy of mention as a possible candidate as Pacquiao's next opponent.
Lamont Peterson - He used to live in a bus station. The kid was homeless and did what he had to do with his younger brother Anthony to survive. The both of them lived on the streets, and by the grace of God they were rescued by current mentor and trainer Barry Hunter. Peterson coming off of an impressive gut check win over Amir Khan showed what heart and determination can do in the ring. Khan has been making a lot of noise about a fixed score-card, and the fight was recently called a no contest. Nevertheless, Peterson's effort against Khan does make him a viable choice as Pacquiao's next opponent.
Timothy Bradley - A veteran, he served his country in the Iraq war. Tim is a young, fast, durable, tough world champion. He is in his prime, and his speed would match up with Pacquiao's pretty closely. He is tough as nails, he stays out of trouble, he works hard, and it has paid off for him. This guy definitely would bring it in the ring, and it would probably be a competitive fight.
Juan Manuel Marquez - We all saw the first 3 fights. This guy by far has given Pacquiao the most fits. In their last fight, it was Marquez by most accounts that should have gotten the win. The judges saw it differently and gave the win to Pacquiao. It was a very close fight, so I don't personally have a problem with Pacquiao getting the victory. With that said, Marquez definitely matches up well, and is the only guy on the planet that has figured Pacquiao out. Arum seems to be pushing for a fourth fight between the two, but it's not a done deal yet.
If I had to pick who Pacquiao's next opponent should be it would be between Lamont Peterson and Timothy Bradley. Marquez had three chances, and Cotto had his shot as well. Bradley worked hard to get where he is at, and he is a world champion.
Lamont Peterson just has that feel good story. A former homeless street kid that rose to the top of the boxing world. He's a class act kid, and both he and his brother rep the sport well. Peterson dug down deep in his fight Vs, Khan, and earned more fans in doing so. He just keeps on coming. He does not match up as well Vs. Pacquiao as Tim Bradley does, but he certainly isn't any less worthy of the opportunity.
