It would have been excellent a couple of years ago. Cotto did not put himself into position for this fight by beating a Margarito who clearly had eye issues and had not fully recovered from his fight with Pacquiao.
Cotto's style would offer NOTHING for Mayweather and his shell. He'll be eating flush counters all night. It would/will end one of two ways, Mayweather by KO or Mayweather by UD with Cotto cycling the championship rounds. Cotto is a great champion and he can still do great work out there, but Mayweather can do better than this IMO.
No question I will pay for this fight if it happens, and I will enjoy every 24/7 leading up to it. However, Mayweather -vs- Martinez is expotentially better since there's actually a chance that Mayweather doesn't easily walk right over him. The timing of Cotto's departure from TR is perfect for this..
With that said.. The PPV #s for Mayweather/Cotto would be crazy. It's got 2 of the top 3 PPV draws in boxing. It's going to be difficult for the Money Team to resist this money.
Yeah it would be a sick fight, even the biggest Floyd fan is going to be a little doubtful when they're both walking into that ring. We haven't seen that type of atmosphere in a Floyd fight for a long time. And I also think Martinez has star quality and the build up would be great.
Yup it would be a great way to pass the torch of PPV to the next group of elites
This is the part I have a problem with in bold. Also, this fight will peak with the 24/7. It's never good when you know going in a fight is peaking before the actual fight.
Sometimes beat downs are entertaining.
The fight is a compelling for several reasons, although the important one it being an actual competitive fight isn't really one of them. Although who knows unless we actually see that fight.
Still I want to see it to bring closure to the matter, and lots of people wanted to see it and still to this day feel like Floyd needs to clear it up.
I just don't think Martinez makes sense and there is no way they throw Canelo to Floyd currently they need to keep Floyd out there for him as the carrot, there is now way they want Canelo to lose to Floyd they want Canelo to be next and doing that fight next really cuts out the legs on that plan (IMO).
I just don't feel Cotto is that different, he is probably not at his peak but he is still a good representation.
I really don't find it that different, although I certainly agree I doubt it will be competitive or that interesting.

even though it would be a MAJOR PPV DRAW...I think the match would be very one-sided and Mayweather would pick him apart
would rather just wait for the winner of Berto vs Ortiz II
Drew,
even in 07, Floyd would have schooled Miguel
Definitely. And had I not been a bit noobier then, I would have been aware of this. However at least then there was some slight mystery to it. At least an "0" on Cotto's record that suggested it might not be a waste of time. That illusion is gone. Although apparently not for all. I'm still seeing Cotto by KO over Mayweather predictions. Cotto's style always played directly into Mayweather's shell.
I think we would all like to see Sergio or Pac in there with Mayweather but the chances of those two getting in the ring with Mayweather before Cotto and Alvarez are slim to none in my book.
Roll on 5th May and we get Floyd and then again in June we get Pac, i'm looking fwd to both :boxing:

Mayweather -vs- Martinez would be sick. And boxing fans would have a real reason to be fans of whoever wins.(and probably of the loser) It doesn't make the dollars of the Cotto fight and it's more risky. Time to forget it as an option.

Nope, I agree with everything you said. This fight makes perfect sense for Mayweather in terms of where he is on his timeline and where this fight would land financially. It's hard to see how Mayweather won't make this fight honestly. With that said, following the Ortiz fight dud. I'd really like to see Mayweather challenged on some level one last time...
I think as Boxing fans, and I've been a guilty of this too, we write fighters off way too soon sometimes. That's not to say that in this case Cotto is a fresh young warrior, but there's other intangibles that we've seen throughout the years with guys who may not be in their prime, but surprise us out of no where leaving us thinking, "Damn, maybe he's not as beaten down as we thought". In this case with Floyd and Cotto, I see two guys who aren't their younger selves anymore, but a fight that even today could make for a surprisingly great night of Boxing. As fans, that's all we can ask for.
Well he fought Ortiz in his last fight so I don't get why you don't think he'll fight a young lion. Canelo would make tons of money, probably equal to a Cotto 'bout if it goes down on May 5th with a stacked Mexican card. Let's face it, Floyd is going to sell regardless of who his opponent is.

It's the next biggest fight Floyd can make. You gotta remember guys, Floyd isn't here to fight all the young lions of the world let alone a full fledged Middleweight. He wants to make the most money he can before he bounces. The only guy that comes to mind as far as creating an event that would be a success with two big fan bases, no other guy fits that bill with Floyd better than Cotto as of right now.

Better PPV fight than any other fight available. Personally I think Cotto puts a better challenge to Mayweather than Pacquiao based on styles. Cotto's style is close to Castillo when he beat Floyd.
Face it, Arum wont let his cash cow fight Mayweather because his profits wont be as big in a co-promotion.
Let me also say a Pac/Cotto rematch would be equally ridiculous. And it's being considered, so I also hope that does not happen. Cotto loads with his hook too much, and his cross is just not that good against the very best of the elite. He will look baffled trying to crack Mayweather's shell. Mayweather will see Cotto's offense coming.
It's a great payday for everyone involved, and a fun event for the HBO cameras.
It's pointless in terms of boxing history. Cotto has not earned this shot with the Margs win, and he won't win the fight. On paper Mayweather will beat Pacquiao as well. Cotto's style and tank of gas does not offer problems for Mayweather. Imo.

I agree with you, if it was 2007 it would have been a huge mega fight and one of the most important welter weight match ups since arguably Trinidad-De La Hoya. Things change and it's unfortunate it never happened, but now it's not a very interesting fight, a pretty darn good fight yes, but not the huge mega fight we savagely want. Floyd against Pacquiao, Martinez, and to a lesser extent Canelo are the real mega fights IMO.
Still would watch it and get excited for it, I and many boxing fans have wanted to see that dream match up for so many years now.
