If you were Miguel Cotto: Who you fight next? Why?
There was a thread asking who you want Cotto to fight but I feel that it was an incomplet question so I decided to start a new thread.
Now, I ask this: If you were Miguel, who would you fight next and why? Succession?
I believe that Miguel should go for:
1. Canelo: He will unify the belts and also be awarded the prestigious Ring Belt. It will demonstrate that he can beat a younger/stronger fighter (even know he will be criticized for fighting an inexperience fighter).
2. Martirosyan, Lara or Kirkland: Defending and winning against the belt against a top tier 154lbs will solidify him as complete 154LBS.
3. Bundrage: If victorious and crown as the undisputed unified champion will place him as a likely first time ballot selectee to the HOF and as by-product rank as a solid top 10 P4P. Most importantly, having 4 belts will make him the most wanted guy by either FMJr or PAC.
At this point, Cotto will be able to draw on one of the biggest purse/fight of modern boxing (other than a Pac/FMJr).
4. PAC or FMJr.: If, and only if Miguel were to be victorious against PAC or FMJr., how would you see him? What would be his legacy? Will he be considered an P4P ATG?
I would fight a hand picked opponent, so to speak. A guy he can beat but has momentum. Look impressive and set up the Pacquiao rematch/Mayweather fight. As it is he is considered a big underdog and that may drive a small bit of money away from the table.
I would actually target the winner of the Ortiz vs Berto rematch at Welterweight. Puts him back in the rankings there lining him up for Mayweather or Pacquiao in every possible way.
I'd go for Alvarez. It's a big fight, and he's coming off a fight against another well-known Mexican fighter. So, the Mexican/Puerto Rican bull**** heats up again. Also, Cotto will likely be the A-side to this agreement and that means that his stature goes up regardless of the outcome (Unless he loses badly, of course.) So, he's assured at least one decent fight to retire on or what have you.
Also, Canelo is beatable and has a ABC belt. A unification would help his legacy and he'd essentially be the guy at 154.
Canelo seems obvious. Everyone else has some big rewards, but a likely loss or too tough a test with no real upside.
Agreed. Canelo's 0 is ripe for the taking, he's still young and vulnerable, so this is the perfect time for a veteran to beat him before he gets too big. The #1 and #2 of the division face off, perfect fight.
Pacman-Cotto 2. That's the fight I wanna see. I know some are not sold on it, but I believe Cotto can win the rematch above 149.
People are up in arms $hitting on the Cotto Margo win, but they supported the Pacman-Marquez 3 dicision. If Cotto boxes & moves I'm certain that I here the "Pacman has leg cramps", excuse yet again. Roach needs to teach that guy to cut off the ring or else he stands no chance again sound boxers (who are not shot to pieces).

1. Pacquiao 2
2. Mayweather
3. Canelo
4. Chavez Jr.
If Pac doesn't demand a catchweight, I'd go for Pac first and if he wins, the fight with Floyd becomes that much bigger. Canelo would be great, but I just don't see Golden Boy doing it. Chavez Jr. just to become the first Puerto Rican with 4 titles in 4 weight classes.
If I were Cotto I sure as fukk wouldn't have #2 and 3 as an option at all. My options would be:
1.) Pacquiao
2.) Mayweather
3.) Canelo.
The only reason you need is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
I see what you are saying. Should he "tune-up" with Canelo first? Then, why not go for K9's belt as well...then fight Pac or May?
I would go for Canelo no doubt.
1. Money - PPV
2. PR vs Mex theme
3. the winner would be the #1 guy at 154
4. winner could get floyd or Manny next.
Agree. Canelo should be the first fight.
I would fight Sergio Martinez. You won't make a lot of $$$ because he has no fanbase but it's an easy win and sets up a possible fight with JCC JR.
Another option is Manny Pacquiao at 154. Every LB above 145 helps Miguel Cotto.
Well, Sergio will be a very good fight but its a dangerous one. May not be what Migel wants right now.
Best fight for him right now = Money and potential enhancement for his career
That IMO is Mayweather. Why? Because Cotto has the weapons and skills to make that fight a lot closer than people give him credit and if he is able to pull of the win or even make it a close fight he greatly increases his name and future PPV value. Even if he loses (unless it is a Gatti style loss he walks away in a very similar position with many if the same fight options that he had before a Mayweather fight.
Ill love to see a FMJr. vs Cotto fight, but Cotto should tune against a younger may be stronger, who has some hand speed. I belive that Canelo meet that challenge. If Miguel come out with the win, and if is a very solid one like a stoppage, should be enough to lure...or scare FMJr. :boxing:
Canelo for a tuneup against another Pac fight and if he wins that one go after Mayweather since with a victory he would become an attractive fight for Floyd.
Great option. Who will be a more dificult chanllenge?
PAC or FMJr.?
P4P ATG?
  .... I'd fight Martinez
Dont you belive that if Cotto were to come out with the victory on the fights I listed 1-4 he will be considered as a P4P ATG? Will would be easily the #1 or 2 P4P, unified all the belts and with victories over some of the best P4P in modern history.
Those are some significat wins. So, if you feel that's not enough, what would you add? Fight and defeat Sergio? Miguel coming out victorious on 1-4, he could fight Sergio by mid 2013 and coming out with W or L will have the full resume to retire and with all the credentials for first ballot HOF selection and P4P ATG consideration. Having done so at age 33. YOUNG!
Canelo or Mayweather are the best options. Fight Mayweather before he goes to jail: Make big money. Win or lose fight Canelo afterwards: another big money fight. From there he can either try and unify the division or retire.
A Sergio Martinez fight would be great but it's the toughest challenge out there and doesn't bring in any money. If anything fight Chavez JR for the real Middleweight title since he has it. That would mean he would have to wait for JR and sit out a little longer.
So it can be Mayweather, Canelo, K9, or Martirosyan for his first fight of the year. Then he can go ahead and fight Pacquiao, Chavez JR, or any of the other options left over from the first part.
I belive that FMJr. started his sentense this week.....but I could mistaken or you mean AFTER he gets out?
Agree on Sergio being a tough challenge. CJr. is an option, I belive he is way too big for Miguel and could be a difficult fight.
