Calzaghe finished his career undefeated but with very few good wins to mention. He completely dominated Lacy when he was undefeated, which was a solid win, though Lacy pretty much never won another fight after that. He also outclassed Kessler and barely edged Hopkins.
Ward completely dominated Kessler and nearly KO'd him. He beat him much easier than Calzaghe did. Next he shut out Arthur Abraham, who was considered the best or 2nd best fighter at 160 before making the jump up to 168. He also completely dominated Froch last night, who Calzaghe did not want to fight. Ward easily won a tournament Calzaghe would have never thrown his name, losing no more than 3-4 rounds the entire tournament.
If you had to judge today, who has been more impressive with their career in terms of who they have beaten and how convincingly they did it?
Just as I thought this forum couldn't get any more stupid
proves that most people on here are fanboys and haters.
Calzaghe wins handsdown.
Really? How? Beating Kessler in a far less impressive fashion? Or the razor thin victory over a 43 year old Hopkins? Or was it beating up a shot version of RJJ? Or maybe his fantastic ability to duck top competition and stay at home his whole career? Slap happy doesn't have **** on Ward. Ward will leave him very far behind when it's all said and done.
Ward has definitely already done more than Calzaghe, and he is still a young buck. When it's all said and done, historically, Ward will be far > Calzaghe.
i think ward look great lastnight but i honestly think calzaghe would easily defeat him to me calzaghe is up therw with the mayweather and hopkinss who are just too hard to beat and wards amature style wouldnt pull it out on calzaghe
we know ward cant hurt him and calazaghes workrate over wards defence would win him the ud
were talking 100 puncheas thrown a round here theres just no way ward wins
Calzaghe doesn't throw that many punches when he fights a good defensive fighter. Hopkins was able to cut down his work rate in half.

Calzaghe would beat ward on any given sunday, ma kneega. Joe please come back. Fight ward and then retire. Hbo, please offer joe 15 million for a return.
He hardly did TOO MUCH too late, fighting an old ass Hopkins in a fight that along with boring me to death had the industry split on who actually won, Joe just wasnt landing anything clean. That GIF of him missing every shot in a pathetic windmill attack sticks with me. And Jones was a rotting corpse who still went the distance and even floored Joe.
Carl didnt turn pro until 25 so he couldnt really make his move too early, he's actually at his best Now imo but i do expect him to start slipping soon
With a forearm smash. Let's not forget that eh. But yes, a horrible spectacle to end their careers ... that fight could have been awesome 5 or 10 years earlier. The Hopkins fight was equally horrible for different reasons, but you can't win a fight by ducking and throwing 7 punches. Hopkins lost, and Hopkins has only himself to blame for that. And even then, it showed why Calzaghe was so good and why he'd have beaten Ward ... Plan A went to **** but he came back with a different plan and pretty much won every round later in the fight. That's the sign of a great fighter, whether you like him or not.
Froch was a damn shame. Spent years calling out Calzaghe when he was fighting club level fighters. He was getting slower just as he started fighting at world level. Damn shame really. Early Froch was damn quick and really lived up to the Cobra moniker. Now? Not so much, even if he's a lot smarter these days. Didn't make the most of his ability either.
Anyway, this thread depresses me. Put me in the camp that's a big fan of Calzaghe and Ward. He's the first SMW that genuinely excites me for years.
Who has the better fundamentals? That's what I mean by boxing skills, not who is the better fighter. Hopkins has more boxing skills than Jones but Jones was the better fighter in his prime because of his reflexes and athleticism.
Fair enough. Ward had the better amateur career but Calzaghe's wasn't bad ... and could have been better if it wasn't for a fallingout with the ABA. Calzaghe was technically very sound, at least before his hands broke. It depends how you look at it. Either way, not sure it matters all that much. I think Jones' skills are underrated also, but I suspect I'm in a minority there.
More boxing skills? Not as far as I can see.
I base it on who I think would win the fight. Early Calzaghe would blast him out with speed and power. Later Calzaghe would outwork and slap him around from the inside. If Ward pulls a Bika, like he did vs Kessler, then Calzaghe wins on the back foot. Ward possibly beats the Calzaghe of the last couple of fights, but Calzaghe was largely shot by then.
That for me is the biggest tragedy of Calzaghe ... too much too late. It's also the biggest tragedy of Froch ... he was a lot quicker than this in his 20's but simply didn't fight anyone of note until he was on the down slope. Could have been special. Shame. Still had a good career though.

Fair play regarding Calzaghe's hands he turned pure slapper late due to that. But NEVER at ANY point could he have hung with a Prime Roy Jones, NEVER.
The Calzaghe of Ried times should have Lost to Reid who was nothing special
The guy just didnt make full use of his gifts by testing himself with the best, Froch isnt the fighter Calzaghe was but he gets my respect far more for how he has went about his career
You do realise he broke his hand vs Reid. He won it one-handed. Reid was a world level fighter who had just been robbed out in Germany by the single worst refereeing performance I have ever witnessed. I'd say a prime Reid beats a prime Froch. Please don't bring up the horrible spectacle when they fought when Reid came out of retirement. To even get to the end of the fight was an achievement. To win was immense. Have a word mun.
Froch gets more respect? Who the hell did he fight until he passed 30? Both as bad as each other on that score. And a shame on both counts.
What criteria do you use to qualify one better than the other? Because Ward has more boxing skills than Calzaghe but Calzaghe was faster and had more natural agility.

In fairness, the threads are being made by idiots. And if you're going to say Kessler had hand trouble you're just leaving yourself open for people to point out that Calzaghe was a) at the very end of his career and b) had hands of glass at that stage. That wasn't a prime Calzaghe, certainly not physically.
This post sums up a lot of the nonsense about Calzaghe, mainly because a lot of people only saw him after Lacy. His physical peak was much earlier. I'd love to see the Calzaghe of the time of Reid and Sheika around a few years later or especially now. Different animals. That Calzaghe could have hung with a prime Jones, and there ain't many you can say that about.

Who's the better boxer? Calzaghe all day long and twice on Sundays.
