Jack Loew should have seen it coming. He probably did. Former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik has apparently made the split with the only trainer he has ever had. What was a rumor in October is about to become reality, as Pavlik is reportedly moving to California to train under Robert Garcia. Loew has not returned phone calls to The Plain Dealer, but was quoted in the Youngstown Vindicator last week saying that he “had no desire to work with Kelly Pavlik anymore.” Citing a lack of control over the fighter away from the gym, Loew had told a Youngstown radio station the break was taking place. “It’s a sad way it ended,” said Loew during the radio interview. “When you can’t control a fighter outside of the ring, it’s time to walk away. I have no control of Kelly outside of the ring anymore, and I refuse to take the heat for things I can’t control.” After winning the 160-pound title in September 2007 against Jermain Taylor, Pavlik has seen his career sidetracked by defeats to Bernard Hopkins and Sergio Martinez. He was also hit by illness, injury and alcohol, undergoing rehabilitation for that a year ago.
