We see it every few years, a British boxer builds up a long undefeated record against either poor opponents or opponents past their best and then they usually get exposed once they fight a good or world class opponent,
Just thinking about guys like Hamed, Hatton & Khan.
Froch wasn't hyped. He was living off bashing Calzaghe. Carl has fought a string of top fighters and his only lost could had gone either way.
Foch has won me over with his victories.
Khan is over hyped, Brooks shows promise but they are hyping him too much.
Bruno was a hype job, Lewis was a dominant force in the division.
One thing is for sure the British are great fans and travel where the fighter goes and bring a good atmosphere
The only person that hypes up Kell Brook is Kell Brook.
Too early to write Khan off.
I agree with Brook being over-hyped.
I doubt he is world-class. He could even lose to this dude in New Jersey.
On thread, you can't debate whether Amir Khan is a world-class fighter, he is.
Please tell me why Naseem Hamed shouldn't have got the hype he did...
How was Hatton over-hyped.... the guy only lost two fights, one to Floyd (Cortez) above his normal 140lb division and the other to Manny. If you aren't allowed to lose to the top two pound 4 pound who can you lose to?
British fighters receive a lot of support from vocal fans. On every boxing website there is a group of British boxing fans, it's why fighters from Argentina, Italy, France etc aren't regarded as ' hype jobs '.
People from those countries don't populate a boxing website like the British do. That and the fact fighters over here are normally brought up too softly or don't have it what it takes and get exposed against world class operators.
Also not as many people speak Italian or French. Britain and the US share a language so we can always break eachothers balls
gary lockett, michael jennings, mathew hatton, etc...they were supposed to be the next mike tysons and they were destroyed! hype!
Nobody was hyping those fighters.
What does ts mean by hype? Are British fans saying so and so fighter is going to be the best p4p fighter ever..? I cant think of one fighter who has that label, if anything from the British fans i know they cant wait to slate British fighters when they loose. The only people who hype these fighters are promotors..its their job and if you cant see through the bs then you need to learn some life skills.
Were they? Who thought that?
I can't remember them being KOed by a 42\1 underdog
no one. hbo/promoters like to find british bums to sacrifice so their hyped up guys can look good. there's something more appealing seeing a british guy get destroyed then any other nationality. i don't know why. it's similar to how klitschko's find ameribums like briggs to beat up so the german fans can go nuts (politely clap.)
Now if you want a perfect example of 'hype' = Jeff Lacy.
no way dude look at his elite resume. look at his mesmerizing performances against elite guys like sheika and donnell wiggins. look at the way he would bash his opponents behind the head with wild clubbing punches. he was an elite level talent. i mean he beat manfredo jr and even knocked him down. something the great joe calzaghe couldn't do.
gary lockett, michael jennings, mathew hatton, etc...they were supposed to be the next mike tysons and they were destroyed! hype!

If you happen to be from england, all those guys would simply be "fighters" to you and not "foreign fighters." this is a childish topic, the real reason is why can't you form even a base understanding of someone else's perspective? how do you suppose they view American fighters over there? hmm
you speak like a person who has never left the neighborhood they grew up

You have picked 3 pretty poor examples to be honest.
If you had gone for someone like John Murray then maybe you would be talking at least a little bit of sense.
Hatton lost to the 2 best fighters on the planet who were both in their prime. He gave Mayweather trouble early on but the ref didn't let him fight. He then wasn't the same for the Pac fight. He is in general an underrated fighter.
Hamed made 15 World title defences before losing to an ATG. Had ferocious power, good chin and was very elusive. He didn't have the love for the sport when he fought Barrera. Would he have beaten him in his prime? Maybe, maybe not but he would have given him a lot more problems for sure.
Khan has beaten some top fighters already as well as doing enough to beat Peterson. He won't give Peterson a chance in the rematch.
Big time "World" Champions, eh?...lol
You're a fool.
Now ask yourself this...how many credible, CONSENSUS Top 20 P4Pers have you had in the last 20 years?...and how many do you have today?
Then ask yourself how many America has had in that time frame...and how many they have today...and THEN, how many for each after Ward defeats Froch...
You're FOOKED, and you're on The List.
p4p is subjective.
A world championship is something real.
I haven't done the count but I'm betting America has not had 50 world champs in the last 5 years.
We have world class media in every format available everywhere in the world. We are only guilty of marketing what we have, if all the other countries had the same tv, satellite, newspaper, magazine, online etc media their fighters would be getting the same "hype" on the world scene
For a small country we compete at world level at most things. p4p we are up there in most things regardless of the "hype"
:nutkick:
British Champs over the last 5 years.
Alex Arthur
Ricky Burns
Joe Calzaghe
Nathan Cleverly
Enzo Maccarinelli
Gavin Rees
Carl Froch
Ricky Hatton
David Haye
Amir Khan
So with a population of 60 million Britain has produced 10 world champions in the last 5 years.
America has 5 times the population, so have they produced 50 world champions in the last 5 years?
