We can finally put to rest the speculation that Cotto's power at 154 is not as good as it was at 147. I have made threads in the past about this topic and my view stands I really think Cotto has more power at 154 than it was at 147. The punches he throws really have some big time power behind them and I saw a couple of times in the Margarito fight that Cotto almost lifted Margarito with the right hands and hooks he also cut Margarito in the eye, the nose and had him spitting blood.
I am sure at 154 he does have more power, just because he has more muscle. The real question should be, how is his power at 154 compared the true 154 pound fighters? The only true 154 pounder Cotto has fought was a no power, one legged Yuri Foreman. I am betting that his power at 147 compared to others at 147 is going to server him better then his power at 154 compared to others at 154.
Here is another thing to think about. Cotto wants big money fight. Who is there in the 154 weight class that would make a big payday for him? I don't see any big money fights that he is looking for in that weight class. Now at 147 you have Mayweather, Pacquiao, Berto, and Ortiz. Khan and Maidana are moving up to 147 as well. Marquez could easily fight at 140 to 147. I am betting Rios could also fight from 140 to 147. All the big money fights for Cotto are going to be at 147. If he wants a big money fight, he is going to have to go to 147.
Its not that power goes down when you go up a class, its that fighters up there are better able to take the punches.
But Cotto has decent pop. He just has an ugly right hand because of the surgery
Cotto was barely able to hurt Foreman with his punches he no power at 154 and his power wasn't very impressive at 147 either.
Terminally butthurt. :bottle:
I think Cotto's got enough power to at least get people's attention but not as good as it used to be at 147. I wouldn't say he's feather-fisted either.
You can't rely say, "Well, look at the Margarito rematch." Margarito's got an iron chin, he's proved it again, and again, and again, and again...
Mayorga's never been a guy to get stopped easily. Tito landed bombs on him for eight rounds before finally stopping him, Mosley looked so-so against him, and Cotto looked better (but still not spectacular). The only guy who dispatched Mayorga with little difficulty was in fact Oscar. Other than that, Mayorga's a tough guy and a tad underrated. He's not an elite fighter, but I wouldn't exactly call him a flat-out bum either.
Cotto/Canelo- I'd pick Cotto.
Cotto/JCC Jr- I'd give Cotto the benefit of the doubt but I don't see it happening based on the weight differential. Whoever has to give up territory (ie, move towards the other's division) loses. I'm now interested in looking at JCC's last two fights. He didn't look good in his fight against Sebastian Zbik but he showed how explosive he can be in the Manfredo fight. Not very precise, but explosive...
The only guy out there right now that is all bad for Cotto is James Kirkland. Pressure fighter with crunching power and does amazing body work. To be fair, Kirkland wasn't hit as much as it seems in the Angulo fight. It was, for the most part, a one-sided beatdown. Kirkland's southpaw stance, body work, explosive power, and relentlessness would be too much for a small junior middleweight in Cotto.
I would say Trinidad put him away fairly easily too, plus Trinidad faced a tougher version of Mayorga, one that had never been dropped. Trinidad got hit because he stands and trade, while Oscar was a boxer-puncher who overwhelmed Mayorga with speed. Mosley looked bad against Mayorga until the KO and Cotto looked so so until the KO.

I thought his right hand looks to be getting better and better. That shoulder surgery must have really helped him out, plus both Steward and diaz seem to have him really turning the punch over more and throwing it properly. His left is wicked and outside of Margarito and maybe El Perro I dont see anyone at 154 standing up to the onslaught he unleashed on Margarito in those first 5 rounds. At 160 at least against Jr he would have extreme hand and foot speed advantages over that kid and I actually see him getting stoppage before round 9. That fight will be way easier for Cotto because of Chavez' skills and style.
From round 7 on, that's true. But the punch I'm talking about took place in the 2nd round.

He was clearly not hurt.
Cotto's team put water on the canvas and Foreman slipped on it, of course your gonna hurt a guy who can barley walk. All of Cotto's stoppages at 154 are suspect lol look at Mayorga, he quit. Margarito got stopped not because of Cotto's power but the cut reopened. Foreman slipped on water and hurt himself and could barley move
lol Foreman was wobbling just trying to move around the ring

He wobbled Foreman with a right hand, his weakest punch.
But that was always Miguel Cotto. He got most of his KO from body shots or accumulation of punches. My point is people said his power would go down at 154 but if you compare some of his last fights at that weight (147) and even the erlier ones his power at 154 seems improved and with more pop.
Yea but he'll get less respect. He's not feather-fisted and he's got enough pop to keep guys honest, but not to the degree in which he had at 147. And at 147 if he wasn't fighting guys with iron chins(Mosley, Margs, Clottey) he was able to really hurt everyone he fought.
I don't think he's gonna be really hurting anyone with one or 2 punches at 154.
He's got enough pop to get respect from most(unless they're inhuman like Margs) and probably enough for accumulation stoppages, but not enough to like hurt someone early and put them away.
