I like Martinez, i feel he lacks fundamentals due to his late start in boxing, but hes got natural talent as well as great athleticism. Hes got speed and power and is never in a dull fight. As far as beating Manny and Floyd, im not sure yet but i would give him a great chance to do it. What do you think?
Over. Don't get me wrong, I was on the hype train back when he beat Cintron twice in one fight and ended up getting robbed. But in all honesty, after watching the Barker fight, I'm not sold on Martinez going up to '68 or '75 and doing well against technicians (Wright, Dawson, etc...)
As always your opinion is to be respected and I cannot really disagree on the poinst you make except for one thing: Those wins, regardless of how good or bad he looked, does not IMO warrant the high p4p ranking he posesses. That is because it is my opinion that rankings should be based on actual achievements rather than potential and the wins on his record is not good enough IMO.
The Williams win was what made Sergio enter the ranking in the first place, but I found Williams vastly overrated at that point.
In the end p4p rankings are highly subjective obviously and this thread craves subjective opinions by definition. I gave mine. Others can have theirs and thats ok.
I really can't argue with that. It's hard to say what win would push him to that point where his ranking would be indisputable. But like any champion, he should start in his own division - Pirog, perhaps?
These forums are out of control and racist, in my humble opinion.
Bernard Hopkins at 160 was the guy to beat and the FIRST guy to beat him since Roy Jones in 1993 was Jermain Taylor, and Taylor beat him TWICE.
Kelly Pavlik destroyed Taylor. Then he got outboxed at 170 by Hopkins and suddenly he's crap.
Sergio beats Pavlik up worse than Hopkins IMO and somehow Sergio is overrated?
It's silly how people forget the past and change history to their liking. "Oh, that guy was always overrated"......
BN - can't say I agree with you, my friend. Even his wins against no-names have been impressive to me. A lot of people point out Barker as a bad win but I had heard (prior to the fight) that Darrin had hired some new people - trainers, etc. - who I know personally and have a great deal of respect for. For that reason alone, I came on here and posted that he would have a tough time with Barker. But he closed like a champ. Dzinziruk is no joke either. Martinez is the real deal IMO.

Martinez is top 5 definitely. I'd have him at number 4 behind Marquez. He's only just come to prominence and I don't think you can say he is being ducked. There are guys calling to fight him. I think Cotto and Chavez Jr are more realistic fights for him than Mayweather or Pacquiao. They campaign at 147 and he has only just become a name fighter. I don't like how he has become one of those guys that have a few big wins then start to beg for a Pac/May fight.
He should continue fighting ranked guys in his divisions and try and win more belts, etc. If he wants Mayweather/Pacquaio he needs to at least be fighting at 154 regularly again.
He is the most overrated fighter in boxing today.

For anyone that thinks that a 5-10 jr middleweight koing the Punisher cold & beating a 6-1 lineal middleweight champion is nothing, name another fighter that fought at 154 that could do that at the time that he did.
exactly. No one else could do that right now. And its ok for floyd and pac to force little fighters to come up in weight but not ok when martinez asks them to do it? This guy has talent and should be #4 or #5.
i feel he lacks fundamentals due to his late start in boxing,
wtf? his boxing is full of fundamentals: defense, dodges....he handle the distance like a master.
I don´t think he started late of boxing , his first pro-bout was at the age of 22 years
I think he's overrated.
Doesn't mean he's not a good fighter, he is a good fighter.
He's in the Top 5 best fighters in the world currently.
I just don't think he's as good as Mayweather or Pacquaio which a lot of people try to claim.
