i'm not sure if this guy meant it as a joke or something but this got me thinking...
Gabriel_Montoya Gabriel Montoya™
After two rounds, the first thing I am thinking is this is not the Javier Capetillo trained Antonio Margarito. #boxing
robert garcia has a good roster of fighters, but most of those fighters have talent on their own, and imo usually carry out the fight on their pace/thoughts.
mikey garcia is said to have natural boxing ability because he grew up around it. i even remember watching one of his fights recently on hbo where kellerman or someone said "boxing chose him".
nonito donaire is an obvious one that has skills on his own. he even said after the montiel KO he planned it himself and told robert he'd knock him out in the second.
brandon rios is a brawler with not much defense who relies pretty much on his heavy hands and pressuring his opponents.
i remember watching a couple of his corner talks and honestly i never recall him saying anything constructive besides tonight where he told margs to cut cotto off and step to the other side he was usually moving, but he obviously didn't follow his instructions. also in the donaire/narvaez and rios/acosta fights i don't him saying anything too much besides "stay calm" or "keep letting your hands go". i know lots of people got him in the lead for this year's trainer of the year, but idk, i'm not too sold on him.
thoughts on robert garcia as a trainer?
hes an upcoming trainer.....................not nacho or roach..................but hes one of the top trainers out there..............
If I had to say anything it probably be something like this.
im not sure of the guys he's trained
but here goes
pavlik
margarito
rios
guzman
i dont know about guzman, but it seems robert isn't a fan of tactical retreat or defense, albiet he also trains donaire(i think)
i was thinking the same **** the only smart thing i heard him say was cut off the ring other than that he told margarito to throw 3 uppercuts constantly kind of hard on a moving target.
yeah. i remember all he did was yell at him in spanish, i don't remember him telling him to do anything like cover up or watch out for certain fights.
I was referring to refusing to stop both fights when it was clear Margarito's health was in danger.
He probably cost Margarito vision in his right eye for the rest of his life, whether that is a good thing or bad is up to interpretation.
yeah. i remember all he did was yell at him in spanish, i don't remember him telling him to do anything like cover up or watch out for certain punches.
I think he's good.
Not every fighter can work with the same trainer, different trainers teach in different methods and sometimes that clashes with a fighters fighting style.
yeah i guess. with margs it's different cause he's already a veteran and has his habits but with rios i haven't seen much improvement. idk, like i said for some reason i'm just not sold on garcia yet.
