First of all, I'm not a hater or anything close to crap like that. I would just like to read some opinions regarding this matter. I've never quite understood Mayweather when asked about Cotto. At first, he said Cotto was green. Then Cotto became, pretty much, the top welterweight in the world around 2007. Floyd chose to face Hatton instead. With the talent that Floyd has, seriously, I don't get why he would fear Cotto. Do you think Mayweather feels that Cotto has the style to beat him?
By the way, I want to make something clear before I'm misunderstood. I started this thread to get opinions of other posters. This is not a hate thread.
I remember watching interviews of Mayweather in which he was asked about Cotto and he either said that Cotto was too green or that Cotto was not a big name to deserve a shot. I found that ridiculous because Cotto was already making a lot of noise at welterweight and had been mentioned, for years, as a potential rival for Mayweather.
I understand boxing politics, promoters, etc. but I never saw an interest in Mayweather. Maybe if he said he wanted to fight him but the promoters were not agreeing then I would not have any questions. Everyone's entitled to an opinion and I just want to see the general impression regarding this matter.
Some say Cotto was not interested in fighting Mayweather as well. And I don't understand that silly reasoning. Promoters and the boxers' managers put these fights together. Why would Cotto's team not interested in a big fight like that? Tell me why?
:usa2:
Cotto is slow and flat footed. I love cotto but, may would have beat the living **** out of cotto. I can explain everything but, it doesn't matter. Hey if cotto wins and looks good i would love to see cotto may next year.
Yea yea the woulda, coulda, and shoulda. Now it would just be another fight, it won't be anything like it was back in 07 when Cotto was undefeated.
It was so obvious Cotto was the biggest challenge for Floyd at that time, yet i seem to remember Floyd saying something along the lines of, Cotto must prove himself a bit more become a bigger name or something similar to that.
Typical blase type attitude towards things.
I don't recall Cotto ever screaming for fights with Floyd or Williams, either.
But that is not the issue when it comes to Floyd really. Because Cotto was someone who was supposed to be Floyds toughest challenger at that time and his toughest opponent to date, and Floyd never made an effort to show he could beat him. Floyd is supposed to be so great without having fought the best opponents so no one cares if Cotto screamed anything!
Floyd was supposed to be the best, yet we dont know if he could beat Cotto at that time. Cotto was beating people just the way Floyd was, so what right did Floyd have to be proclaiming himself the best? Margarito was a player then as well, and people said Floyd was scared to fight him.

come on I think it is pretty obvious who really did not want that match...BOB ARUM
as if Arum was really going to make a match with Mayweather...After Mayweather Left Top Rank...that reason why Mayweather left Top Rank because Arum did not want to work with Oscar after Oscar himself left Top Rank
Arum has a history of HOLD GRUDGES...I don't know why he gets a pass and why people in the media are so afraid to call him out and EXPOSE HIM FOR WHAT HE IS...the Media acts like they are AFRAID of Arum
I don't think Mayweather ducked Cotto or Margarito...that is what Arum made stupid fans believe...he is doing it now with the Pacquiao vs Mayweather thing

No, and I honestly don't think Cotto could beat him most days. Anything can happen in boxing, but I would not expect Cotto to win that bout, though I would of course be rooting for him. I do think Cotto could present a challenge for him, though.
Whether Cotto could or could not beat Floyd is irrelevant to if Floyd ducked him or not.
The fact is Cotto never offered Floyd anything. Floyd never turned down any fight with Cotto. Ever. Therefor is not a duck.
no way. Floyd was with HBO & Tszyu was with Showtime. Tszyu had 1 more fight left on his contract and that was the Hatton fight. Everyone felt that if Tszyu won then him & Floyd were next but he didnt
That's another good point.
No although i do think he ducked kosta tzyu

When did that happen lol!!!!!!!!!!!! Plz stop it!
Well, dude. I guess we can agree to disagree but, at the time, Cotto was on a roll and had stopped Quintana, stopped Judah, and outpointed Mosley. I'm not the only one who thought Cotto was, perhaps, the top welter at that moment. Certainly, it was not Baldomir, who was a tough fighter but basically all he did at 147 was pull an upset on an overconfident Judah and a worn out Gatti.
Cotto was the main man back then, and Floyd didnt show urgency to fight him, sums Floyd up in a nutshell. Dithered so much that eventually Cotto was beaten by Marge and the rest is history.
Always misses the boat Floyd with his lack of urgency casual dithering approach.
I'm sure if Cotto beat Margarito that fight or one with Oscar De La Hoya could have happened. I think an Oscar fight would be first and if Cotto beat him it would only be right to have Cotto vs. Mayweather. Things got ruined.
i really doubt he thought to himself yeah i think i will lose to this hatton guy who is a huge underdog and hasn't beat any good fighters.
Of course he didn't think he was going to lose.
But, what he did know, is he was very injury prone and coming the to end of his career. And didn't have many fights left in the tank.
