I'll start of by saying that I'm from Puerto Rico, but I am objective and tell things like I perceive them. I must say that I have never found Cotto to be very "friendly" like Trinidad or Gómez were, so I never developed that affinity like with those two. Sometimes, I have even felt that Cotto has been arrogant in interviews and flat out refused to be the succesor of Trinidad, which is his prerogative and I respect that, but I can understand why even some of us don't feel the same from him as we did with Trinidad.
That being said, Cotto has all my respect and admiration for his skills and fighting spirit. Say what you will about him as a person, but his courage and heart is unquestionable. He only "quit" one time in a fight that was a lost cause. The guy just did not have strength to fight back any more. Still, all the wars against Malignaggi, Judah, Mosley, Clottey, etc. seem to be overlooked.
Even if he "quit" against Margarito (I'm not even getting into the possible handwrap issue), he deserves props for what he has shown in other bouts. One fight does not make a whole career. Chavez quit against DLH in the second fight and nobody questions his courage, and neither do I. Erik Morales, who's one of my favorite fighters ever, "quit" against Pacquiao in the third fight and no one holds that against him. Even Roberto Durán, who's one of my absolute favorites ever, quit against Leonard and that did not hurt his legacy in the long run. I don't know, I think that with some objectivity, several fans would understand better and appreciate the efforts of a ring warrior.
He was hyped up as some kind of elite fighter which he simply never was.
I remember before the Cotto fight most people had him ranked Top 10 P4P ahead of FAR FAR more deserving fighters like Wlad Casamayor Pavlik etc etc
I don't know where Wlad was at the moment (what wins he was coming off of) but as for Casamayor and Pavlik...
Cotto was at the height of his power between November 2007 and July 2008. He was probably among the top 4 or 5 fighters in the world.
Casamayor was coming off a shady as hell win over Santa Cruz (a disgusting robbery) and Pavlik, who was still undefeated and KOing everyone, probably deserved some slack, but over Cotto (at the time)? I doubt it.
Pavlik's best wins and status between 2007 and mid 2008 was a champion with one title defense against Gary Lockett, and two back-to-back wins over Jermain Taylor, the first of which was a fight of the year/upset of the year/KO candidate. His best wins were over Jermain Taylor. After that, he lost his undefeated record and his stock dropped severely by how poorly he performed against Bernard Hopkins to close out the year.
Pavlik's best wins (circa 2008)- Taylor (x2), Miranda, Zertuche...
Cotto's best wins (circa 2008)- Mosley, Judah, Quintana...
Once again, my assessment of him is not because he is whining over the wraps. It is because he will say something like, "I am taking my first loss like a man" then 30 seconds later, "He will say something like i only lost because he cheated." He is essentially negating HIS OWN first statement where he says he is taking it like a man when he goes on and on about the total opposite of what he said.
If Margarito came out and said, Yeah I hit Cotto with bricks from my house's garden, Cotto's attitude would still bug the **** out of me because he is saying two different things at the same time.
It is like saying, I don't care what you say, yet here I am trying to rebute everything you say. Does that make sense? Like saying I take my beatings like a man, but I cry everytime and scream like a girl. etc.
Then on top of that he isn't the most charismatic guy on the planet. He might be a swell guy, but he definitely doesn't show it and some of you guys have admitted such.
So once again this has nothing to do with whether I think or don't think Margarito used bricks, or whether I think Cotto is wrong for accusing him. It is because he makes two different allegations at the same time during the same sitting depending on what makes him feel better.
When Erik Morales, my favorite fighter of all time, blamed his weight and his inability to make weight as reasons why he lost some important fights that too bugged the sh-t out of me because the truth is he was stuffing the sh-t out of his face on tacos, beer, and womanizing.
When a old super shot, beat down, Julio Cesar Chavez, one of the top 5 fighters of all time as far as I am concerned retired and didn't give his fans the thanks they deserved.... again bugged the **** out of me.
I call it like I see it imo. But that is my personal opinion. The meat of my post is that I don't think most people that talk **** even hate or dislike him. It is usual fan banter that hypes people up. It ups the stakes and makes the sporting event even higher stakes.
If no one was talking about this fight it wouldn't sell, it would be soulless.
I get your point. I don't agree with it in full, but I get it. That is, if you replace Cotto with someone I do not like, then I would probably be with you on much of it. Reality is, a lot changes for a person when he suddenly realizes (after the 2009 fight (Mosley/margarito)) that it could have been and probably was tainted.
I guess it is just perspective. I greatly respect Cotto. He is my favorite fighter. There is no question, in my mind, that Cotto is responding well considering the psychological trauma of getting so battered only to conclude (with help from the Mosley fight) that someone was gambling with his life. Even though he made those two declarations in the same basic span of time I do not find them incongruent because he did handle his loss like a man, and he is only speaking his rage about what he has learned during this 24/7. I guess it's easier for me to see things my way and for you to see things your way because of our perspectives.
He was hyped up as some kind of elite fighter which he simply never was.

Admittedly I don't really follow Cotto but after watching his interviews and the 24/7 episodes so far I'm really impressed with the way he conducts himself and his attitude towards life and boxing.
Personally I believe Margarito had illegal wraps in their bout so I'm rooting for Cotto all the way.
Of course all of your derision of Cotto's behavior and your staunch repudiation of the allegations against margarito would be considerably altered, I hope, if he admitted to cheating against Cotto. What would your opinion be then? Would Cotto be 'whining'? See, from where I sit, that's what I think went down. It's perspective see. As margarito has already been caught with loaded gloves, it makes sense for people to speculate that all of his wins are tainted. And, margarito himself has contradicted statements he has made on different aspects of the allegations time and again. I think the evidence stacks more in our favor than in yours.

I do not hate Cotto. But I will say that lately he just seems like a total b1tch. Crying, *****ing, and moaning all day long. But the main problem is first he says one thing then changes it up. It's the same reason I don't like freddie roach.
First he is like I don't know if used bad wraps but I am taking my loss like a man. Then he is over here crying about how he is sure he got a beatdown because Marg used illegal wraps. So what happened to taking your loss like a man and not accusing.
It seems like as the fight draws nearer he starts to become more and more anxious and he starts to act out more and more. He seems fake and of course his serious emotionless attitude towards everything doesn't help him.
I will say that as a fighter he USED to be near the top and I think at one point he would have stopped Floyd Mayweather Jr of course if he used the right game plan like he did against Quintana.
Although a lot of people give Cotto's diehard fans **** about quitting, no one really hates him because of it. It is just some banter back and forth among the competition.
I find it more interesting that the die-hard Cotto fans are so sensitive starting thread after thread of why this and why that.
When your fighter is going to fight another fighter you should expect some jabbing if not, maybe sports period aren't for you because it is the same thing for soccer, football, basketball, etc.
If you cant handle the heat, stay out the kitchen
Or
If you cant hang with the big dogs, stay on the porch
You get the point.

I don't know if that part of the post is related to this particular thread but, if so, perhaps my initial post was not read since I am far from a Cotto fanboy. If it's a general statement then, whatever, disregard my reply.

He is hated by the Mexicans because he is Puerto Rican and is hated/discredited by many Mayweather fans because he was a Pac opponent
If you're NOT Mexican than should STFU and dont speak for Mexicans....
I know Mexicans that are going for Cotto vs Marg.....and alot of Mexicans went for Tito vs Oscar...
dumb asses
no clue really..
I think people just naturally like going against the grain..he's given us some pretty good wars to go back and watch like torres, mosley, judah, clottey, margarito, etc.
I notice it's mostly margarito fans who bash him, yet when the counter-argument you brought up about duran, chavez, morales, etc they either make themselves look stupid or come with excuses of being past prime..yet vazquez quit in the first marquez fight and that was a prime duran who pulled a 'no mas'..
I just ignore it now, since i do believe they simply do it out of envy, and for attention..in this generation of people it's "cool" to be a hater, the b!tchasness that's justified is hilarious, now it's "ok" to be jealous or downplay another man's accomplishments like women do, and their counter to that is.."eyebrow plucking"..again somethin abner mares and chris arreola do themselves..but because they're mexican-americans the margarito fans ignore that and find it quite alright. duran is from panamal not mexico. And we dont care how u all sugar coat it he quit like a ***** .and will quit again on saturday because he s a p rican n not mexican.
cotto look like stupid gangster. like in comedy movie.
dum-dum face. confuse looking face. like he gotta poop.
is it racist that every one of your post I read it in kahns voice from king of the hill?
:bounce:
Note to some of the posters on here: It's not entirely the fighters choice of who he fights. Somewhat, it is, but mostly it is the promoters and managers. They don't just ask you, "Who do you want to fight?" No. Especially when you're coming off a devastating loss or moving up in weight. They present you with an offer and you either accept or decline. As I said before, Cotto is an all business type of guy. If they present him with an offer, and it makes sense, he will most likely take it. Therefore you guys hate on him for fighting fighters that he probably doesn't choose to fight, but is offered to fight. As far as I know, he hasn't really ducked anyone and has always fought whoever was out there. Pacquiao, defensive Clottey, Margarito twice, Mosley, slick Judah, moved up to fight Mayorga and boxes beautifully and KO's him last round, I mean where's his credibility for all this? Haters gonna hate.
i used to like him, but problem is his last 2 opponetns have been bums, foreman and mayorga. Then he asks for a catchweight against margarito even though he has a 154 lb belt, and then he says he will only fight in NY if fight had to get moved, he has basically let the money get to him
I can't hate on him for fighting foreman when you consider that it was his first fight at 154 and he just got destroyed in his last fight against pacquiao...so can't blame him for wanting to take it a bit easy for his next fight in a new weight class. however, i'll agree that mayorga was kind of a lame choice of opponent, but the fight and pre fight build up was pretty entertaining though.
becausse he's nothing more than an HBO and Top Rank hypejob just like his Filipina buddy Pacquiao. You have to understand that these guys are MADE fighters. HBO and other media outlets hype this guy out and MAKE an image for them and people belive it. HBO wants you to belive that Cotto is this big powerful Puerto Rican who never quits and is a warrior blah blah blah. But didn't you see him take a knee?
Cotto is one of the most overated fighters of this deacade. Barely beat Malignaggi (LOL) , gets busted up every fight and gets called a warrior for it, gets busted up by an INACTIVE Zab and fouls him blatantly twice LMAO. Overated hypejob just like Pacquiao.

I think people hate Cotto because of his "quiet" or "unfriendly" demeanor. He never smiles in interviews, never refers to any great fighters or fights, he just answers his questions very short and simple. He's not outgoing.
A few other reasons: because he "quit" against Pacquiao, never called out Mayweather, got a close win over Clottey, and accuses Margarito of cheating.
That being said, Cotto is not arrogant, he's an all business type of guy, and I think he doesn't care what people think of him. I admire this type of person. He is a "right to the point" person.
"Quitting" against Pacquiao: If you were/are a fighter, you know how important heart and courage are to you, and how quitting is never an option, so I don't think that even though he stopped fighting back, that he actually quit. He simply wanted to finish on his feet. Maybe only fighters understand this.
He never felt the need to call out Mayweather or any fighter for that manner, because he doesn't need anybody to determine how great his career or resume is. He just fights whoever is in front of him, and that quality of humility is great to have.
People are haters and dont want to see him succeed, so he wins a close decision against Clottey that people think he lost and people think he didn't deserve it. So they associate him with being over-hyped or a fraud job.
And the Margarito issue, if you were in his shoes, you'd most likely think the same as he does.
Last but not least, people are just haters and will always have a reason to hate on him and wish him bad.
I admire him. WAR COTTO
He is hated by the Mexicans because he is Puerto Rican and is hated/discredited by many Mayweather fans because he was a Pac opponent
I'm a Mayweather fan and never liked Cotto even years before he fought Pac.
inb4 Cotto's too small for Marg @ 154, Cotto's damaged goods, this fight doesn't prove anything. In his prime and without the plaster Cotto would've whooped Marg
It proves nothing either way, agreed. But if margarito wins it could favor the claim that he did not cheat. If Cotto wins it could favor the claim that margarito cheated. It proves nothing, sadly.
