I was watching a video by Dwyer aka Gambler's Advisory and he talked about Cotto's chances against Margarito being remote due to the beating he took in the first fight much like Calderon's chances were null in his rematch with Segura. He also states that people should stop putting so much stock into the hand wrapping scandal because if you look at Margarito's next fight against Roberto Garcia it is very clear that he still has punching power.
His prediction was that the pressure coming from Margarito will still be too much for Cotto to take and that Margarito will win this fight again. I don't always agree with this guy but he breaks it down pretty well as to why he believes Margarito will get his hands raised in this fight.
There is 1 major difernce and unknown and that is margacheatos eye and face there is a question mark as to how it'll hold up to any sustained irratation caused by whatever force trauma Cotto can inflict this fight could end up like Marquez-VazquezIV where simply his eye won't hold up that is a possible scenario.
All depends on Cottos conditioning for the fight if it goes into the later rounds
Calderon was and is feather fisted.
Cotto is not.
Margarito in his last fight took the worst beating of his life and is coming off a 13 month layoff in which he had two surgeries on his eye.
Segura was riding a 5 fight win streak.
The scenarios are far apart.
I agree with your post bro and the first line would have been enough ...
Cotto is also much smaller than Margarito. I think the height difference between Cotto and Margs is the same height difference between Calderon and Segura, 4 inches. Although Cotto has better power for his weight class, I don't think he hits hard enough to really give Margarito any trouble. We all saw what happened in the first fight and even Manny Pacquiao said Cotto didn't hit hard at all. I don't think Cotto will be stopped as quickly as Calderon was but I think Margs is going to put him in the ringer again and may just win again.
Margo has lost that extra gear that he had the first time they fought.
Watch Margo-Pac and Margo-Cotto.
Only pay attention to what Margo is doing.
He's slower on his feet. The upper body movement is gone.
I only expect a further decline coming into this fight off the beating he took and the 13 month layoff.
Even Prime Margo when he moved up to 154 vs Santos looked pedestrian.

To Margarito he is. Marg took Cotto's best shot and laughed.
It could but I doubt it. Calderon just couldnt get Segura's respect with anything he threw at him. Cotto cant hurt Tony but he has more than enough power to keep him honest and can do damage to his face/eye
Not really a fair comparison. Calderon was MUCH smaller then Segura. I mean Calderon was pretty small for the lowest weight class in boxing much less the weight class above it. Throw in the fact that he has zero punching power and well its just not a fair comparison. Cotto has good size and good power. Cotto just needs to clinch a little bit and he'll should be fine.

calderon was able to use his legs and handspeed and keep the same pace for 12 rounds i think he beats segura in his prime. at 35-36 his legs are gone, his speed is decreased. but segura gets a lot of credit beating a boxer who never tasted defeat in a decade. plus can anybody respect calderon's power??? big difference margarito respects cotto's power.

I don't see that happening. Cotto is a much harder puncher then Calderon(relative to their weight class obviously)
Segura is also a faster starter and goes to the body much more often. Segura pretty much jumps on you from the beginning of the fight. Margarito always takes a while to warm up and tends to pick up the pace during the second half of the fight.
Add to the mix: Calderon was 36 years old... Out of prime for SURE.
I wouldn't use those terms as it's like discrediting Segura's win, because I don't think Calderón would've looked good against Segura at any point in his career. He might've put up a better effort, but I think he would've lost regardless.
If you have knockout power in a higher weight class than your opponent and have a good chin to boot...and you're going up against a smaller guy in a lower weight division with a cringeworthy KO percentage...then there's really no reason to respect the guy. You just bumrush the guy and smother him, beat him up, hit him everywhere. The pace will tire him out, especially when his lack of power can't keep you off of him.

I'm so pissed. I was writing an epic post and the browser froze. Dammit.
Anyway, this isn't the same as Calderón-Segura II. In a nutshell, Calderón was facing a YOUNGER, NATURALLY BIGGER, STRONGER, BETTER-CHINNED opponent in Segura. On top of that, it was in Mexicali...in a SMALL ring. Calderón had the deck stacked against him in that rematch. He would've had to put on a masterpiece of a boxing clinic to beat Segura. Not only that, but it's RARE for a fighter to LOSE BY KO/TKO, seek an IMMEDIATE rematch, and win big in the next fight. When has that happened? The only guy that comes to mind as of now is Lennox Lewis over Hasim Rahman. Cotto took the time to rebuild himself and regain confidence. Calderón went straight to Segura. No tune-up, no other fights, nothing. He just went straight to his conqueror. Big mistake.
Cotto is a bit younger than Margarito, less battle worn, more active, more versatile, fighting a guy who's relatively the same weight as him, AND...Cotto's fighting in HIS hometown.
I understand the comparisons in regards to pressure and whatnot. The only times Cotto's looked bad when being pressured by Mosley a little bit, by Clottey, and by Pacquiao. Not only does Margarito do that better (pressuring and cutting off the ring), but he has a better chin than those three.
Calderón-Segura II is different. That's all I'm saying. I give Segura FULL CREDIT for both wins. But I just don't see enough similarities between these two rematches to warrant a similar outcome. It's not impossible, but I just think it's highly unlikely.
I also don't think Margarito is feather-fisted as some blind Margarito haters claim. He showed he can hurt Pacquiao and, at the very least, proved that he still has one of the HARDEST chins in boxing and enormous heart. Margarito is no walk in the park. He was SMILING...SMILING on the canvas after Mosley knocked him down. The man is a psychopath. You could shoot him at point blank with a Desert Eagle and he'll just sneeze and keep walking forward.
Roberto Garcia it is very clear that he still has punching power.
That fight went 12 and ended in decision though. Garcia was not affected by the knockdown and continued to pressure Margarito. And If you look at Garcias face after the fight he looked like he walked in off the street.
And that could very well possibly be the case. But i still feel that this is Cotto's fight to lose. It was Cotto's fight to lose the 1st time around too. If he comes in with multiple game-plans and keeps himself composed and focused, he should win this fight.
