The people saying this fight doesn't mean anything are missing the point of the fight, and missing the great storyline that goes with it. The Thrilla in Manila was the greatest heavyweight fight in history, and it featured an aging, slowing Muhammed Ali against an aging, slowing Joe Frazier.
This fight is about pride, and vengeance. Whether Margarito knowingly cheated, it's obvious Miguel Cotto thinks he did. And whether Cotto has any real evidence, it's clear Margarito wants to shut his mouth with his fists.
So what we have is two men who don't like each other, and the way that they settle this is in the ring. Yes, it's for a 154 lb title, but who cares. They could be fighting for the Interim Interim Intercontinental NABFKLNOA belt and this fight would mean the same thing. At the end of the day it's about settling a score that has needed settling since the wrap scandal broke. Passed their prime, yes. But these guys hate each other just as much now as they did when they first fought 3 years ago, probably much more actually, and that makes this fight as interesting as almost any pound for pound match up out there. Great motivation makes great fights as much as great talent does. Glad I'll be in the Garden to witness it first hand.
The Beef is totally legit. If Margarito did cheat in the first fight(which I think he did), then he effectively ruined Cotto's career.
Imagine Margarito hadn't used plaster(assuming, of course, that he did) in the first fight and Cotto had won.....? Would he have beaten Clottey more convincingly?....probably. Would Pacquaio have even taken a fight with him(bare in mind that at the time of that fight people were saying Cotto was too big, and remember the aura that surrounded him when he was unbeaten)?.....who knows, but if so, Cotto wouldn't have lost as badly, and could conceivably have won the fight.
The repercussions of the beating Margarito gave him have haunted him since, except for when he fought Jennings, Foreman and Mayorga, who were all clearly outclassed. How can the beef not be legit?
if 10 years from now they still hate eachother, i'll consider this "real" beef
So when Ali fought Fraizer for the third time, that wasn't beef? Because 10 years didn't pass.
I agree cotto gets alot of hate on here. most people wouldnt fight a guy they think might beat them, let alone someone who already did in brutal fashion. He has a good resume, perhaps better then some of the favorites on here.

I'm just gonna stop responding to you because you obviously have no clue how to recognize a rare legit grudge match even when it's staring you right in the face. Hope being completely oblivious to reality works out for you.
You're an idiot, period. Cotto is how much smaller than all of those guys? Especially Tito and Oscar? Cotto is NOT nearly made for 154 like those three, so just GTFO with "him not looking good." They were all better punchers period, this is coming from the same guy that says Cotto is too small for 154. So... the "small guy" is supposed to run over guys that outweigh him by 10-15 pounds on fight night? Please, Cotto isn't in his prime but he isn't sh*t like you and so many others make him out to be.
Oh boo hoo he's small :lol1:
How small is Pacquiao and look how he knocked out Cotto.
how is this "real" beef?
it's a rematch, they happen alot and most fighters dont hold grudges
ali-frazier was completely different, what ali did was legit fukked up, not simply spanking him in the ring
How is this not 'real beef', the two fighters hate one another.
I have never seen anybody knock out Mayorga in the 12th round. Oh wait an old Shane Mosley did it. And past prime versions of Trinidad and DLH both knocked out younger and fresher Mayorga in under 6 rounds.
Not that Cotto is past prime...just that he was never that good to begin with. And he certainly isn't even what he used to be back then, which was not a big deal anyways.

Are you for real? Potentially loaded gloves that altered Cotto's career permanently are less offensive to a fighter than being called "dumb" and a "gorilla"? Is that your honest opinion?
what ali did with frazier(when the sport was huge) had blacks practically turning on frazier and his kids getting bullied in school
what ali did and said, literally affected his childrens lives
how is that not worse than
"argh, you could have "potentially" loaded your gloves"
"ok, but what if i didnt?"
"argh....umm, well"
Both are past prime.
But I don't see this as a fight that will enhance either of their legacies.
I see this as just a straight up fight, in which neither guy like's each other and they just want to fight.
That's why I'm excited. I wouldn't be excited otherwise.
I don't give a flying f*** how far past it they are, because they are probably in the same physical condition and they are going to go all out. Both truly believe they will win, and have a lot to prove.

what do you base on him being passed prime? losing to margarito and pacquiao? because in his prime he doesn't lose?
That and the way he looked in his wins over Clottey and Mayorga but specially because of the level of opposition his been fighting lately tells me Cotto is done

interesting fight yes, but both being passed their prime does matter imo. and what really takes the piss is the fact that its at a fcukin catchweight.
It's 1 lb. The only reason to complain about the fight being at 153 is because you're looking for something to complain about. This makes just about 0 difference in how the fight will go. Do you think Tony or Miguel making 153 instead of 154 will make a huge difference as to the outcome? The whole catchweight thing was more about the two camps playing mindgames than anyone actually caring about what weight this gets fought at.
It doesn't matter what weight, for what belt, and in what country this gets fought in, although that its at MSG is awesome. It's about the rivalry between two men who don't like each other.
Don't know why people always so Cotto is passed his prime. He's still very good and dangerous as a fighter. His only losses are to a guy with loaded gloves and a roided guy at a bad catchweight. Untill he looks like shlt in a fight, he's still an elite fighter.
I don't know about the roided part, but I agree with everything else you said.
Guy's got 2 Ls on his record and has a whole pile of good names in his W column. Don't know why so many dog the sh1t out of him all the time.
Marg has an impressive if suspect record as well.
The bad blood is real and these are 2 tough and accomplished sonsab1tches.
The TS is right on the money.

what do you base that on the Mayorga and Foreman fights?
this is a lame fight truth be told I could think of 4 JrMW both would lose to, Froch vs Ward is the only big fight I'm looking forward to this year.
