From Dan Rafael's blog :
The saga of where the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight will take place has now reached the level of surreal, with Cotto saying on a media teleconference Tuesday that if the fight isn't in New York, he won't fight.
Whoa.
Poor promoter Bob Arum sounded like he was about to have a heart attack when Cotto said that.
"I signed for this for New York," Cotto said when asked for his opinion about the possibility that the fight could be moved because of Margarito's licensing problem in New York. "I didn't sign this fight for somewhere else. I'm going to fight in New York. I'm not going to fight in another place. I'm not going to present myself in any other state. New York State. If New York says and the medical people from the commission say that Margarito is not able to fight because of his eye, any commission has to respect that."
Arum seemed at a loss for words, which is rare. He said he didn't know why we were even having the call before the New York State Athletic Commission took a vote Tuesday afternoon on Margarito's license.
Perhaps Arum forgot that it was his company that scheduled the call.
Anyway, later on the call a writer from Puerto Rico asked Cotto about the venue again. Cotto this time answered in Spanish, which was translated by Top Rank publicist Ricardo Jimenez.
Cotto, who would have massive backing from what will be a sellout crowd filled mostly with his Puerto Rican fans, reiterated his stance:
"When I signed for this fight with the company and Margarito, the fight was to be in New York City and that's where the fight should be. It's not a question of giving an advantage . I signed to fight in New York City and that's where it should be."
At that point, Arum was clearly agitated and immediately ordered publicist Fred Sternburg to end the call. Then the line went dead.

While I agree with you for the most part Natas homie(About Cotto trying to take a stand). I say we should wait to see about this one here. Cotto has a track record of caving in to Bob. He 1st said that he wouldnt put his WBO title on the line for Pac at a catch-weight(I backed Cotto 100% with that decision). Bob got him to change his stance on that(Which pissed me off), and now Manny is the WBO champ. I wouldnt be surprised if this fight is held outside of NY. I wouldnt be surprised at all.
One occurence is not a track record. Can you recall other ones?
Maybe he learned a lesson.
Cotto was threatened to be stripped if he did not fight Pac at 145. That's why I have no respect for that win for Pac. Other people claim its a good win, but those are mostly shameless Pacfans and other idiots. Cotto was not only cherrypicked over Shane Mosley, he was forced to fight at a catchweight. I don't respect that win at all. But I do respect Cotto for what he's doing here, especially if he doesn't budge.
Your feelings on Mayweather's win over Marquez?
Fuck you, Arum. Go fuck a goat or something. Who seriously makes a fight, gets a venue, and all that stuff before licensing the damn fighters?
Cotto: "I'm nobody's bitch!"
See Manny, THAT'S how you do it!

Remember that thread the other day that was asking if Top Rank fighters are basically slaves? Take notes. Cotto just showed everyone who's the boss. If he doesn't like something (fight not being in NY like originally stated) he has the power to tell Top Rank to fukc themselves.
Tell that to the Pac stans who want to believe it's Bob, not Manny that's to blame for the impasse with Mayweather.

It's kind of sad that Arum might pull the same bullsh*t he did with Donaire. If Cotto refuses to fight Tony then Arum might screw Cotto and keep him out of big promotional fights for the duration of their contract.
I think Cotto only has 1 more fight left on his contract anyway if im not mistaken. Anyways this is all Bob Arums fault. The idiot should have taken care of this situation BEFORE finalizing the deal and investing so much money into this fight. Bob Arum screwed himself here and Cotto should not fight anywhere else and tell Arum to go f**k off.

MIGUELLLL COTTOOOOOO!!!!LOL mad props cotto this made my freaking day. kinda hope marg doesnt get licensed its sad to say i would rather see arum suffer than watch a great fight. this man is single handidly ruining boxing. who the **** is he and what is his purpose anyways. why does pac even need a promoter. promoters are irrelevant at this level of the sport. its kinda sad but i think the only human being on earth dying that would make me happy is bob. seriously i feel bad for saying it but its the truth if i saw him in person i would beat his ass **** age.
he main eason cotto decided to do something like this is because he's pissed at Arum for backing Margarito during this entire hand wrap thing instead of him. He feels betrayed by Arum, imo, and is going to do things his way.
I also think he is doing this to make a play for more money.
Good for you Cotto...stand your ground...and leave top skank after your contract is up! And get a couple more good fights, and call it a career! Then go enjoy your family and retirement in good concience.
Now you KNOW if I see you I GOTS to Green you. How have you been Jaz my man? I hope all has been well bruh. It is damn sho good to see you bruh.
SO maybe another $1-1.5 mil makes cotto change his mind.
Hopefully cotto stays firm and top rank releases him. Cotto could fight floyd and Martinez in 2012 and make up for the lost money.
Thats exactly my point Dunn homie. I dont think Cotto is gonna stand firm on this for long. IDK what Bob did to change his mind on puttin his belt up for the fight with Manny, but I'm willing to bet that he will get Cotto to change his mind about not fighting this fight outside of NY. If Cotto changes his mind about not having the fight outside of NY, then I will betting points on Margs to win the fight. Cotto's fighting spirit is wrapped in his stance on this IMO.
If Cotto caves in, look for a repeat performance in the fight.
