I actually thought Chavez Jr. looked better boxing then he does pressure fighting. I do think the stoppage was prematurely but Jr. was gonna beat him regardless, plus the man comes in on fight night at 180lbs. Still dont think he is or will be elite but with boxing anything can happen. Canelo still beats him :).
Calzaghe is the one who signed for that joke of a fight against Manfredo that should have never been made in the first place. Now, did Calzaghe do that because other fighters ducked him or did he do that because he knew he was in for an easy pay-day against a midget who didn't belong at 168?
I like Calzaghe but I try to be as unbiased as I possibly can.
I'm a huge Calzaghe fan but that was a joke fight and unfortunately there were a few of them.
That was a gimme fight for Calzaghe and he had American tv there and stadium full of people. Even the referee was there to stop it being interesting.
The only thing unpredictable about that fight was Joe's rubbish goatee.
Manfredo got stopped against Calzaghe because the fight was stupid.
No other reason.
They should have let Calzaghe wear comedy outsized gloves and he still would have been able to force the stoppage.
They need to continue to keep him away from good fighters.............
this is boxing so you can guarantee that will happen. every "top guy" conducts their own bum parade.
chavez actually hit and hurt manfredo then swarmed him. joe cut out the middleman and went straight into swarming mode without ever hitting manfredo and the ref was like dearrrrrrr goddddddddd stop da fighttttt.
C'mon larry, he doesn't suck.
He's actually improved a lot and is beginning to grow on me.
Plus this stoppage is nowhere near as bad as the Calzaghe one.
Jr. looked just fine. He was pretty much dominating him till he decided he was going to put his hands down then manfredo got close but he was completely outgunned and Jr. hits hard. When manfredo didn't answer any of the punches for a prolonged period what was the ref supposed to do let him drop like a sack of potatos?
Chavez Jr. is a little too stiff and doesn’t move his head very much. Also, sometimes his balance is way off when he hooks. However, while I’m not going to predict future greatness from him, I also can’t protest that much against the stoppage. I like Manfredo in general, but he really looked especially bad tonight and in that last flurry wasn’t returning any blows. You have to stop the fight at that point.
Yeah it was a quick stoppage, but Manfredo wasn't gonna' beat him. Get real. Jr is the better fighter though that's not saying much.
The difference between Chavez Jr. and other boxers is we're being subject to the equivalent of his amateur career because his dad is a legend. I don't buy PPV cards because he's headlining them or might be on them, nor do I get HBO and Showtime to see him fight. Do you?
How many people would train and fight 50 or 60 or a hundred and fifty times for free when they could get paid each time in ever increasing amounts because their pops is already wired into the business?
I object if he has a belt already (does he? I can't be arsed to pay sufficient attention to know at this point). But there are plenty of folks that have belts that are BS.
Right now Martinez takes him out brutally in 2 or 3 rounds. He would probably last a few more rounds against Canelo but the result would be a stoppage.
Chavez Jr needs to keep training with a top trainer like Roach. He needs to keep baby-steppin' up the level of his opponents. He's young. He has time. Whether we like it or not.
