Just curious...can pro boxers work on two contracts at the same time?
hypothetical
For example...can Erik Morales agree to fight Marquez in May (one contract)
papers signed and everything
and the next day...
sign to fight
Zab Judah in November?
It does not seem like an extremely stressful juggle to me...
I mean this should be implemented only if appropriate
such as Pacman to contract a Marquez in May and then Mayweather in December....
I think it would help clean up the sport and it would minimize the labeling of "ducking fighters" and it prevents long layovers to eliminate ring rust
and it would help keep boxing more active
A contract is a contract. You can stipulate anything unless it's border-line illegal. In boxing contracts, I assume there to be clauses on further negotiations if certain pre-requisites are not fulfilled for example, not winning in fight 1 or making a decent showing of yourself in fight 1 to the reasonable boxing judge etc...
Mayweather was scheduled to earn a minimum $6 million while Judah was to earn $3 million plus a percentage of the profits, but because of Judah's loss, Mayweather earned a minimum $5 million while Judah was guaranteed $1 million plus a percentage of profits above $7 million.
The first bit was the contract they had before judah lost to baldomir, which suggests the contract was signed b4 the baldomir fight took place.
Yes... however... How you perform in fight ONE, can change the dynamics of fight TWO.
Mayweather may not want to face Pac in November should Pac lose in May to JMM...
thats true....
but thats business...
i guess it would depend on the negotiation skills
I have heard/read about something similar but in a different order. It's the classic case of the tuneup fight in which a fighter signs for a big fight and then may sign for a tuneup, which could blow up in your face and mess up plans, prior to the megafight.
I think De La Hoya vs. Sturm could be classified as such. However, Sturm was far from a tuneup but DLH thought so.
