Seriously, am I the only one that sees how ridiculous this fight is?
Seriously, Gamboa is a 5'5 SMALL career 126lb fighter. He is already filled out, and doesn't have the kind of frame that will take extra weight well.
Rios is a HUGE career 5'9 135lb fighter, who comes into the right at 150+ lbs, and will likely end up at 140-147 sooner rather than later.
For this fight, Gamboa would have to move up TWO weight classes, to fight a guy who is for all intents and purposes THREE weight classes, and 4 inches bigger than him.
Why? Seriously, why is this fight even being talked about? It is RIDICULOUS...
I said it in the first thread about it too but I really think Arum intends for Gamboa to lose this fight to make Rios a good looking opponent for some of the guys at 140 or maybe Pacquiao in future.
Arum is all about the business aspect, despite his awesome skills and style Gamboa is 31 already like has been said, with time against him considering how much he relies on speed it's unlikely he has the frame to end up a legit opponent for the bigger names in the sport who are mostly around that 140-147 area right now, and that weight isn't likely to help his speed either.
Hope I don't offend anyone here, but he also doesn't speak english so his crossover appeal is limited and doesn't have an automatic fanbase, with the exception of the Cuban fans in Miami and maybe a few other places, at least not the way some other fighters do... he probably doesn't have the time to be built into a star the way Arum likes to do it either.
Rios is young, a big 135 lber who can definitely go up and be an opponent for plenty of the big names at 140 etc, is almost guaranteed to become a big hit with the Mexican fight fans (if he isn't already) given his style and that he fits the Mexican tough pressure fighter archetype.. you can bet Arum looks at him as a kid he can make a lot of money from in future.
If you consider these factors and that Gamboa doesn't seem to be getting a preparatory fight at 135 it seems obvious to me at least that Arum is trying to throw him to the wolves to make the guy with more money making potential into a bigger name for the future. That being said though Gamboa is a great talent and if he paces himself against Rios and sticks to boxing and finishes strong like he did against Salido I think it's definitely a winnable fight for him, though I feel the odds are against him and that it might well look like the first Cotto vs Margarito fight.
You my friend I believe have hit the nail on the head. I can very well see this scenario being played out.
I'm going to be honest like I usually am, I do not like Gamboa, he's just too cocky for my liking & I welcome Rios beating his a$$ at 135.
BB, I dislike the very same things about him, but he's good.
He'll beat Rios. Rios is tough so probly by decision, but Gamboa will beat him.
1st of all Gamboa isn't a small featherweight, and with his speed and reflexes he can probable move up all the way to welterweight and have success. Also weight isn't an issue, this fight can happen at 135 as long as its early next year(March or April)
Gamboa has a very small chance of winning this fight, i think it would be an upset if he beats Rios. Not that Rios is such a great fighter, but the size advantage will be apparent when they are in the ring, and if Gamboa can't hurt him or if he doesn't retain his speed, then it's a wrap.
Gamboa's outgrowing 126 and moving to 130, he's young and will end up at lightweight at some point anyway, and it's a great move because of the amount of people that would not hold a loss against him because of the weight jump. Not to mention Gamboa is maybe the most gifted fighter in the sport and his only concern against Rios would be size. He holds every other advantage.
It's a ballsy move if it happens, and one Gamboa should make. It's win-win.
gamboa's actually 29
i agree about this being a nice fight, though
gamboa has unofficially rehydrated to the high 130's for some time now
there's a huge difference in size but it's not an insurmountable one
i still favor rios, though
gamboa flashes some of his brilliant boxing but fights much of the round without a real identity yet
i think rios' professionalism and his consistency will eventually catch up to gamboa and he'll start dropping him.
there's certainly more going into this fight than size
the styles favor gamboa as long as the ring is big enough. especially early. it could be a terrific scrap if gamboa can put together the sort of boxing performance that his talent and pedigree could allow for.
he's one of the fastest fighter i've ever seen p4p

Good point. Gamboa would take a severe beating and wil also have to bear a psychological toll from it. That is definately too much for him.
In fact I am not surprised that Rios has merrily agreed to do that fight due to the easy money and glory that will bring to him. I am surprised as much as you are that this fight has even been discussed.
Gamboa is one huge waste of talent... Guy could have been the next undisputed superchamp, a sure Hall Of Fame material... Too bad he went pro at 26 years old... definately too old to reach all-time greatness. Great talent. I'm a big fan.
Because rios is a full top rank fighter gamboa is not,bob arum
Is trying to cash out on him,its obvious gamboa never on major cards but rios will be on cotto card.I dont like this fight rios has major advantage.
Gamboa is a good fighter, i think Arum is just getting lazy by trying to get Gamboa to the spot light quicker. Instead of taking him step by step the way he did with Pac. Just like Rigoduex the guy was supposed to be the goods and he's a good fighter but needs to beat a quality named opponet so someone can care about the guy. Or he could just be guided to look like Tyson but more work is needed to produced him in that light.
quit your *****ing because all that matters is 2 men throwing down. Who gives a rats ass how big or small the men are? Its a fight so whatever happens just happens. **** it

I have a problem with it too. Gamboa hasn't even made his Super Featherweight debut yet. Sure he's fought there before, but now he's starting to grow into it. He needs time. He struggled against Salido and couldn't hurt Ponce De Leon. There's a big chance he'll get walked down and bullied. Rios has a good chin. This would be a better fight in late 2012 if Rios hasn't moved up by then.
Gamboa should have at least one fight at lightweight before taking on Rios IMO. If you remember Gamboa moved down to featherweight because he kept getting knocked down at super feather. If I were Gamboa, I'd wait for Donaire to move up, and try to get a fight with Juanma, Chris John or Elio Rojas in the meantime.
Lol, don't get too crazy insulting Pactards and you'll be fine. No begging for streams either.
LOL indeed. But I don't beg streams, I got the coldest hookup out there, real talk, I'm good there homey!!
