I honestly think that Sergio Martinez is great for the sport of boxing. He always delivers an exciting fight for the fans, and he's also great as an ambassador of the sport outside of the ring.
Unlike Manny he has no cloud over him about PED's, and unlike Mayweather he's not a loud mouth/money flashing bad boy. The guy has the potential to be huge, and would be a huge star under Golden Boy or Top Rank. But I honestly think his promoters are horrible when it comes marketing Sergio, and also horrible as far as the direction they're currently looking to take Sergio in.
I really think Lou Dibella is taking Sergio in the wrong direction and wasting time by perusing and calling out Welterweights in Manny & Floyd to fight the Middleweight kingpin. Draining Sergio to 150 is dangerous in itself.
The reality is there's really no big fights left for Sergio @ 160 other than Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, which Top Rank has no interest in making (sound familiar??). Yes that fight would be huge in Mexico, but Bob Arum will not allow it to happen and Lou knows this. So why not take Sergio up to Super Middleweight and test the waters with Glen Johnson first? 168 is stacked with talent and there's so many great matches there for him. Can you imagine the war he'd have with Mikkel Kessler? How about matching him up with Bute, Ward, or Froch?
Its those fights that would propel him to #1 P4P status, not fights with Manny or Floyd. I honestly think people are getting tired of Manny/Floyd both finding reasons why NOT to fight each other. If Lou Dibella plays his cards right and gives Martinez the right matches, it could be Martinez who these disgruntle boxing fans end up turning to.
Not saying that he should do it but the only realistic chance he has of becoming #1 P4P would be to move up to 168
Exactly. I obviously dont think he should fight Ward or Bute in his 168 debut. But a warm up fight against a gate keeper like Glen Johnson would be a great fight to see how his body reacts to the extra weight.
Why? If Mayweather and Pacquiao keep avoiding each other, eventually their stock will go down. Do you really think Marquez does anything for Manny's ranking? No. If Floyd fights someone like Canelo on May 5th it wont do a thing for his ranking either. But If Martinez starts to create his own lane @ 168 he'll start drawing attention to himself that has nothing to do with those 2.
If he stays active and beats some of the top guys at Super Middleweight while Manny and Floyd fight guys like Marquez, Bradley or possibly Canelo, how could Sergio's stock in the p4p Rankings not go up?
did i miss something??all 3 of these fighters are world champs and 2 of the 3 are top 10 p4p

I honestly think Martinez should already be the P4P #1 BECAUSE OF HIS ACTIVITY and the competition he has faced except for PIROG. He is a natural 154lber and if he fought ward, bute, johnson or frock. He would be giving up size and maybe speed also with Ward and Dirrell type fighters. Martinez also isnt a spring chicken so he is in a bad spot at this later stage of his career. Arum want let him fight Cotto or Chavez so what left beside fighting Pirog. Atune up at 168 MIGHT BE GREAT WITH SOMEONE LIKE Arthur Abraham just to test the water with thte size and power difference but he had a hard time with the bigger barker so he may alradey feel that a true middleweight is too big. Pac doesnt get the same criticism that anyone else gets because he hasnt fought a legit fight in the last two years while Martinez has fought at least guys coming off of victories. Floyd is too inactive and I still dont understand why he jumps back to number two after twoo year lay offs. Either hes the best or not. In my book he is the best out there but because of inactvity he should be number two behind Martinez. This is the same as Donaire getting ranked so high for absoulutely nothing while Marquez, Bradley and even Khan of late have been fighting stiffer competition.
Nope.
Pacquiao or Mayweather would have to be willing to fight him, first.
