HBO have put on two PPV shows recently that have ended in farces. Mayweather vs Ortiz ended when Mayweather decided to sucker punch Ortiz, it left a lot of buyer unhappy and demanding their money back.
Then we had Hopkins vs Dawson which ended in the 2nd round with Dawson lifting up Hopkins by his legs and and throwing him down. Hopkins claiming a damaged shoulder and the ref ruling a TKO.
But HBO year looks to be saved by the Pacquiao vs Marquez III fight.
First of both of these fighter always come to fight, great combination punchers, both can bang and both have solid chins.
Both a clean fighters, no dirty tactics, play acting here, though when a southpaw faces a orthodox fighter, there is an increase chance of a accidental headbutt.
Their past two fights were FOTY quality and two classic fights.
Both have been in good form and looked impressive in their recent fights.
Think we could be in for something special.
If you bought Mayweather vs Ortiz or Hopkins vs Dawson and were disappointed, then don't feel discourage by the farces and make sure you get in on the possible fight of the year.
The only reason why Bhop-Dawson was on PPV is broke cuz HBO sided with GBP and Dibella over Top Rank and it failed horribly. They didn't even sell 50k PPV's by the beginning of September.
Meanwhile over at Showtime - a network that hadn't had PPV's in years, had two Top Rank fights - the Cotto-Mayorga 200k and Pac-Mosley 1.3 million (1.5 million total) would have sold more fights in May than GBP would've sold all year combined. This is why Greenburg got fired.
You can blame HBO for chosing GBP over Top Rank and promoting bums (Berto - Martinez-Alexander etc) and giving them million dollar paydays when they can't draw flies to sh*t but you also got to blame GBP and Dibella promotions. Both don't know how to promote sh*t.
In terms of number of buys, I doubt it. I don't think it's going to do huge numbers.
In terms of the fight itself. Can it really do any worse than what we've seen?
I mean, I'm having an awfully hard time trying to convince myself to keep telling people to order boxing PPV's.
Im not gonna give my prediction on how well this fight is gonna do but i can say that both of these guys will show up to fight. There wont be any running around or fake injuries. The haters will hate and say " on paper" this fight is a mismatch but they know deep down inside both of these guys is gonna war it out, they just cant find it inside of them to admit it thats why they try so desperately hard to discredit this before the fight even started LOL!!
Its fukking boxing for crying out loud, who wouldnt wanna watch 2 guys duke it out? if u enjoy watching boxing then there shouldnt be any complaining because its your choice to pay for it or not. If your not gonna buy this fight then whats there to complain about? If your gonna stream this fight online for free, then whats there to complain about?? People who enjoy watching a certain sport doesnt complain about how its the weakest team playing against the best team so it'll be a waste of time, they still watch it because they enjoy the game.
Well said bro ....
Cotto-Margarito II is going to save HBO PPV this year.
This! But this one will either be a very close second or equal fight of the year, hence saving HBO PPV and Boxing in general.
Now while some might consider it exciting to see Marquez get the $hit beat out of him at welterweight, I think it's rubbish. On paper this fight is the biggest mismatch of them all, it'll be an exciting one way beat down, but a mismatch no less. I'll be streaming just like I did the other 2. When Pacman fights someone with a pulse in his weight class or 154, then I'll take notice.
to answer TS question I think both PAC-JMM and Cotto-Maragarito will bring in enough action to save HBO and for sure both fight will do a lot of hits ...
IMHO Floyd-Ortiz was good PPV and dont need saving, only hopkins fight dont show good numbers as normally expected...
I am in the middle of the Sahara so I wont be buying any of those PPVs but if their is a way I could buy, I would probably bought Floyd-Ortiz, Pac-Jmm3 and Cotto-Margarito...
thinking again with the outrageous prices I would just see them on the Cinema or other cheaper option...
At least the Hopkins/Dawson fight was 50/50 and could have went either way. In this bogus fight,Manny is entertaining another catchweight against an older opponent who has showed signs of slipping in his own division a few weightclasses below, let alone showing ANY promise in the welterweight division.. this can be the final nail in the coffin for boxing this year, and worst yet-in front of a million ppv customers and a packed house!
$60-70 to watch a fight, seems extortionate and they are not even megafights.
PPV is probably the main reason for the decline of boxing from the mainstream.
It plays a huge part. Especially to HBO subscribers who already pay $15 a month to have the channel. Paying $70 on top of that sucks. Being a fan of Boxing can become very expensive in the US.
This will be the first HBO PPV in years that I'm not buying. The undercard doesn't have a single interesting matchup and the main event is a mismatch that I don't care to see anymore.
I was thinking the same thing too. The undercard for Pac-Marquez looks like it's going to suck. Bradley-Casamayor is such horrible match making. Fight will probably be a one sided snorefest until Bradley win by TD via "accidental" headbutt.
Prescott-Alvarado I'm unsure about. Prescott is very inconsistent and Alvarado has never impressed me. Not really looking foward to this fight.
The only intriguing fight on this entire card is Burgos-Cruz.
I wish HBO and Showtime would abandon PPV too. I'm tired of wasting $60-$70 for a card that only has a 12 minute main event. A sport that's as unpredictable as boxing shouldn't be on PPV, IMO. The customers get screwed way too often.
I don't think I'm going to be paying full price for a PPV anytime soon. I'm going to stick to sports bars that charge $5-$15 to watch PPV fights.
It was thought that Sky abandoning their PPV package would be a good thing but a new channel Primetime have put some PPV boxing fights on.
After the two Haye fights against Audley and Wlad, Sky decided to pull the plug on PPV.
Something to thank Haye for.
Boxnation a new channel that has start up that just shows boxing which is free till the end of the year and will just be subscription after that should be great for boxing fans over here.

Cott vs Margarito II should be a top fight too, but if Marquez vs Pacquiao III is a mismatch as you say it is going to be then people won't be so quick to buy Cotto vs Margarito II, especially just before Christmas at a time where money is short.
Here in the UK Sky abandon their PPV coverage because of such poor showings in PPV fights.
PPV is much more established stateside but HBO might have to reconsider what fights they put on PPV, because their customers are not going like being taken for mugs.
