Assuming Paul Williams is past it since his KO loss to Martinez (Erislandy Lara schooled him and got robbed), how good was Paul Williams in his prime (2005-2010)???
His notable fights on his resume:
Walter Matthysse- W TKO 10.
Antonio Margarito- W UD 12
Carlos Quintana- L UD 12
Carlos Quintana- W TKO 1
Winky Wright- W UD 12
Sergio Martinez- W MD 12
Kermit Cintron- W TD 4
Sergio Martinez- L KO 2
Erislandy Lara- W MD 12
In his prime, he had wins over Margarito, Quintana, Wright, Martinez, and Cintron. He had losses to Quintana and Martinez. His first fight since his loss to Martinez, he had a very controversial win over Lara, in which he really lost.
In his prime, how good was Paul Williams??? Personally, I would rank him better all time than Margarito, and on par with Cotto. Paul Williams isn't that good anymore, but a few years ago, he was really underrated.
His legacy is easiest giant to hit in the history of boxing and a waste of talent. Dude is 6'1 but fights like a he is 5'4 is really sad, he is a mental midget in the boxing ring. A guy with that reach and height should be fighting behind a jab and with great defense but Paul really never had either.
Reminds me of Mark Breland just taller .
Paul Williams was a world class fighter. Very entertaining. All-time though, he doesn't rank anywhere on any list. He wasn't really a special talent. Still a tough fighter and a guy boxing fans should respect.

He was a true warrior
go rewatch almost all of his fights and you'll see him taking boatloads of punishment
hell, the guy took bombs from walter friggin mathysse. he had a heck of a chin. evidenced in nearly every fight. he got hit very often.
i thought he lost the first fight to martinez by a round. close fight. could have gone either way, but the scorecards were literally bogus.
i had him down on the cards against cintron, as well.
but looking at the footage, i'm of the opinion now that cintron tried to jump out of the ring and win cheap thinking he was ahead on the cards.
and obviously the lara fight was a total jobbing
i thought he lost almost every round. he took hellacious punishment.
lara could not miss with his power punches, and he does have some pop.
i'll remember williams for being a true warrior who was all offense
and at one point in time he was the most avoided man in boxing.
terrific kid, also. very honest.
we dont really know exactly how good williams was since nobody wanted to fight him at his best weights (147 & 154). we saw glimpses of how great he could be in some fights but also plenty of weaknesses.
it comes down to style as well. williams is one of a kind and there are plenty of great fighters (better than him) that would stand no chance against williams just bcuz of the weird and un conventional style of his.
ppl talk about his lack of defense, but at 147 and 154 his jaw was granite and he had the heart of a lion which made up for much of that (and he could acctually box when he wanted to he just rarely did bcuz he wanted to please the fans).
on top of that he had good hand speed and threw punches non stop for 12 rounds. he presented alot of challenges for fighters, he could fight so well on the inside too. the physical and mental pressure, workrate, size, determination, speed and angles he vrought to the table would be very hard to deal with for alomst any fighter.
imo paul williams will go down as a one of a kind fighter that would present serious problems for almost any atg, but didnt quite reached that level (atg) himself. he will be considered one of the better fighters of his generation. not up there with hopkins, marquez, pacquiao and mayweather but in the next category with guys like cotto, tarver, calzaghe etc.
oh wow they are both my fav fighters! They seem cool as hell wish i could train wit them!
tyrone is super chill. rashad is hilarious.
they train nonstop. these guys are beasts... blackzilians is the clique

Easily a top 1279 ATG
Hardly a top 824 ATG
not a top fighter but he was good when he was good.... waste of height and he lost that last fight im still bitter behind that sh!t
exactly... he had plenty of potential... he has a solid resume though. on paper, he has wins over quintana, cintron, winky, & sergio.... but in reality, quintana & cintron was bleh.... winky was spent.... and sergio was robbed.... definitely, p-will is categorized in the "good" column. LOL
BTW, nice sig photo of tyrone & rashad (photo by loco)... really cool guys, i see them regularly (ASM).
entertaining
he was very entertaining, high drama, dangerous risk 4 reward..all out and beat every1 without trully using his height advantage....say what u want but he beat every1 put in front of him...including martinez and quintana so....1 reason why martinez is where he is today and the best wouldnt fight him....real talk

Imo, for whatever reason, he didn't end up being all that...Best name on his resume besides Martinez is Winky and Wink was WAAAAYYY past it when they fought.
In his defense, seems like his career could have been managed better. Jumping around weight divisions and seems like when he wasn't matched that well at his peak. I dunno' it's like they didn't make the most of it when he was hot.
I agree. He's not an ATG, but he's an all-time really good fighter. He may not have had the great skills or anything, but he beat some good people. He had a bad loss against Quintana, but avenged it with an immediate KO. And, he split with Sergiom but obviously Sergio got the better of the wins.
His wins over Margarito, Wright, Cintron, and Martinez are all really good wins. I am just saying I think people underrate him a lot, because he didn't have the great skills, and because Martinez killed him in 2 rounds.
From 2006-2010, Williams was one of the better fighters from 147-154. Not an ATG like Floyd or Manny, probably not even as good as Sergio, but he was all-time really good just with his wins over Margarito, Wright, Cintron, and Martinez.
I agree with most of what you're saying, but it's a sad fact of life that the "also-rans" are almost immediately forgotten. Take a guy like Esteban De Jesus, for instance. Who really remembers this guy aside from hardcore fans? De Jesus was a great fighter in his own right. Yet, his one claim to fame is that he served Roberto Duran his first professional loss. Paul Williams didn't have that kind of career or monumental win on his record.
Paul's best win is a controversial decision over Sergio Martinez. But "Maravilla" probably won't go on to be an ATG. I think most people will agree that Paul was entertaining; he had heart and a crazy work-rate. IMO, those who do remember him will recall those qualities above all.
Paul Williams is not Done. He has just never been good against southpaws. Every bad performance he has had has been against a southpaw. His defense, or what little of it he has just doesn't work against them and he walks into flush shots all night.
Quintana, Martinez, Lara
All southpaws.
:lol1:
Where does everyone get this idea that I said he was a bum from?
He was pretty crap but not quite a bum.
You said it!
Along with Cotto and Margarito the bums.
It's a trio.
Dirk said he was a bum, so he's scraping the bottom of the barrel.
