Every so often because of lack of competition at welterweight, Robinson would venture into the middleweight for a challenge as he did when he fought Lamotta.
I checked BoxRec and it appears Robinson used to do this all the time.
..and what blows my mind is he would elect to come in on fight night weighing welterweight!
It's the equivilant to Mayweather fighting Martinez at 160 but choosing to weigh 147 on fight night.
Amazing!
You are wrong, Leonard tok advantage of his money position to make Donny Lalonde, a NATURAL lt. heavy, come in at under 168 lbs, so that the phony promotion could call it a fight for both the Lt. heavyweight and newly created Super middle weight titles. bsolutely nobody...except you of course.... regatds eonard as having won a lt. heavy title. Lalonde had said he agreed only becuase he really needed the money. As it was he lasted aboyt 9 rds and was doing well until he suddenly faded. I seem to recall that he even KD'd Leonard. The weights were Leonard 165 Lalonde 167.

good times, i was really trying to debate that without coming across as a troll, but that can't be helped
Mayweather has already risen 17 lbs in his career to fight at welterweight (bearing in mind that 1 lb is more siginificant the smaller a fighter is), so it's not really fair to demand he add another 13 lbs onto that to challenge middleweights.
Based on what?
Beating Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams?
Jake Lamotta beat Ray Robinson and Marcel Cerdan at Middleweight.
He beat better fighters than Martinez at Middleweight, and plently of them.
Martinez has never fought anyone on Lamotta's level at Middleweight and has struggled at times.
based on martinez's power, style and lamotta's style
and jake would've lost to pavlik
maybe in the lower weights he beats sergio, but at middleweight? doubt it
anyway, if the question was that lamotta has achieved more, i agree
dont try and argue that martinez would likely beat the living sht outta lamotta h2h?
No Martinez would get destroyed, maybe even stopped, I've exposed your lack of knowledge on LaMotta before.

Iron Dan, debating with these "BoxRec" college grads will make you lose focus on the facts you already know... :boxing:
People need to realize this is 2011
You won't see jumping from a weight class to another for no big reason...
And Floyd should stay in WW its he's natural weight, plus if he doesn't stay you will only hear about Floyd ducking Pac

Easily, and you don't know anything about LaMotta so don't try and argue otherwise.

Sugar is bigger then Floyd, and Martinez is better then 98% of the middle weights Sugar fought.
better as in? he's not as tough as lamotta or as strong as graziano
Problem is Floydie' ain't the same as that of Sugar Ray Robinson;
Another African-American Boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard even made much better than Sugar Ray Robinson, when he went up and fought and win in the Light Heavy Division.
No need for Floydie to go up Middle weight, all he has to do, as what Majority of Boxing Fans wants him to do is, for him to fight Pacman!
Thats why i can never see Floyd as a truly great fighter. He is far too calculating for my liking.
Fighting Sergio is a little risky, but so what? Dont you want a challenge or what? I get the feeling Floyd is considering fighting Sergio at some point, but he is being awfully quiet about it if he is!
Bobo Olsen
Randy Turpin
Jake Lamotta
Gene Fullmer
Rapidly spring to mind.
Hell, is Martinez even better than Robert Villemain? It's argubale.
It's an obvious stupid statment and doesn't need a justification.
jake lamotta is better than martinez? are you foreal?
