Dagenham lightweight Kevin Mitchell was lucky to escape a prison sentence after a judge ruled in favour of community service, after a knife was found in the boxer's car following routine checks in his neighbourhood.
Mitchell told police he had just realised there was a knife in the car and the weapon did not belong to him, and he had no idea how it got into the car, but was convicted after a trial by judge Amakye.
“You ought to have reversed back up to your home and left the knife in a secure place, rather than taking the risk of continuing on your journey, hopefully to get to your training session without recrimination from your trainer,” she said.
“I cannot however, in passing sentence, disregard the incidence of possession of a knife of this nature and also the tragic consequences when people have such knives in their possession, albeit for reasons I have outlined, the prosecution accept it was never in your possession with an intention of having it to use it,” she said.
The boxer will now have a six-month community order to complete 100 hours of umpaid community work. He will also have to abide by a 3 month curfew between 9pm and 7am in the morning.
The conviction comes amid questions from the boxing community as to why John Murray, who Mitchell beat earlier this year, was afforded a world title shot in America in December - a fight that Mitchell coveted.
Perhaps the recent court appearances may have had an impact on any visa applications.
With Phoenix Jones locked up that's about to change in a very negative way. I expect this place to be a war zone in less than 48 hours with villains lurking the streets on every corner causing havoc!
Is Pheonix Jones like a real life batman? Why was he locked up?
america is backwards in many regards no doubt, but potentially going to prison for having a knife is backwards in my book. I understand there have been stabbing problems in the UK and all, but still, I think a man has a right to have some sort of protection in his vehicle if he chooses.
I'm not saying USA is better than the UK or whatever, that's not my intention, I just personally thought it was a bit of a funny crime considering it's like the opposite here.
Seattle is crime free anyway is it not?
What's wrong with this dude... less than 2 years ago he fought Katsidis for an interim title and got over £100,000. then he gambled away and spent all his money and now he's back with an excellent victory yet he's f*cked up again... he has a lot of potential but is wasting it.
you can go to prison for having a knife? lol in the US you can have a god damn RPG and get like $500 fine.
Well the US is a somewhat backwards nation i mean it is one of the few countries that still use the death penalty.
The following 23 countries carried out executions in 2010: Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Botswana, China, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Libya, Malaysia, North Korea, Palestinian Authority, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Taiwan, Vietnam, Yemen and of course the USA.
I think that list speaks volumes.
"It is an offence for any person, without lawful authority or good reason, to have with him in a public place, any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed except for a folding pocket-knife which has a cutting edge to its blade not exceeding 3 inches."
"The phrase "good reason" is intended to allow for "common sense" possession of knives, so that it is legal to carry a knife if there is a bona fide reason to do so. Examples of bona fide reasons which have been accepted include: a knife required for ones trade (e.g. a chefs knife), as part of a national costume (e.g. a sgian dubh), or for religious reasons (e.g. a Sikh Kirpan)."
I don’t see what the problem is with having tough laws on carrying weapons I think most mature adults would come to the consensus that it is in fact a good thing.
It shows the maturity levels on this site when you see people calling a country ‘Gay’ because it has strict laws regarding weapons.
Thats America for you!

He's not going to prison, he's serving a community order.
Seems a bit over the top to be honest, there isnt any law in having a hunting knife/fishing knife...if your driving to go hunting or fishing where you supposed to put it?
Cops making an example.
a lot of ppl hatin on uk knife laws???
i have no experience in this matter but im pretty sure stabbin someone to death takes a lot more balls than just pulling a trigger... and in the uk knives are the murder weapon of choice so thats why laws are so strict
The crime doesnt sound too severe to be honest. Kev is a guy who clearly has issues out the ring though which is the worry. Often in the news for things like this and so its not good. He blew the Katsidis fight and I hope he doesnt blow anymore by not being prepared. You never cared when you heard stories like this about Scot Harisson because he wasnt a good boxer anyway but with Mitchel theres genuine talent there and it would be shame if he let this detract from what could be a great career ahead of him.
Should of told them it was for peeling his oranges and buttering his toast on the go.
Seriously... arrested for owning a knife? You might as well arrest people for having power tools in their car.
Chavs are kind of scum bag types, like they don';t work, steal and are dirty people. Maybe more suited to hillibilies in that sense. They wear sports wear as normal clothing 24/7. They drink and live in free housing.
lol my mistake
hillbillies // hicks generally dont stab people
i thought a chav was a petty criminal // thug
i'm still learning
