Anybody know if this is true? Since last night I've been hearing rumors from several peeps on FB from the island that Steward wont be training Cotto for the Margarito fight but cant find a link or article on this subject. Hoping this aint true.
Cotto Will Be Fine
I see a lot of people alarmed by the news of Steward not being part of Cotto's camp for the Margarito fight.
People, Cotto is a veteran and for those that don't know - he pretty much ran things in every training camp he's been in.
Cotto has matured and he's been in the sport long enough to know what works, what doesn't and what he needs to do in order to win. It's no secret what he needs to do to beat Margarito, even a street light bum knows what the gameplan is/should be.
Cotto knows he has to use his skillset more (move, jab), keep Margarito at bay with the jab and be smart with picking when to exchange. Margarito isn't a hard puzzle to figure out, he's a straight forward pressure brawler.
If Cotto decides to bring in another trainer then good but it isn't necessary. Team Cotto knows what needs to be done, Steward was just a mere guide who provided a few words here and there but Steward didn't/wasn't doing anything revolutionary with Cotto - just made him fight smarter, something I'm sure he will stick with for this training camp.
Opinions?
I wouldn't be surprised.
I've been getting attacked for saying that Steward is way overrated. Everyone here is swayed by reputation and accolades but refuse to look at who he is actually responsible for producing. Everyone leaves him.
First Dawson. Now Cotto.
I told you all that the guy is only good at training taller than average boxers for their divisions. His claim to fame was Hearns, and then he used Lennox to make a case for still being able to produce a top guy. Now the Klitschkos.
Look at what Steward did to Prince Hamed. Look at what he did to Vivian Harris.
A lot of people think that going to Stewart will help them improve their basics, but a jab isn't everything ... and apparently that's the main focus of the tweaks that Steward makes. Jab, jab, jab, jab and then clinch.
Not everyone wants to fight like Lennox Lewis.
Good for Cotto if this is true. Win or lose he's better off without Steward limiting his ability.
Good post.

I agree 110%! You forgot Jermaine Taylor too!!
I got a name: Pedro Luis Diaz Martinez (Cuban Amateur trainer). Apparently this is the guy. Someone told me that this is through the sources.
Who has he worked with?
Agree. who knows, maybe his uncle wants in just for this specific fight! LOL.
Id love Cotto to bring in Nacho but i doubt he would and anyway Nacho has his hands full training Marquez for Pac
I dont know about his uncle, how are things between them, civil yet?
Richardson would be good, though he talks in riddles and it might mess Cotto up only speaking partial english...
I mean its not like Cotto is fighting a Hopkins like strategic fighter where there has to be some great plan a,b,and c. Margarito is coming to fight, throw punches and put pressure and nothing more. Cotto should know what tactical adjustments he needs to make and hopefully his trainer whoever that is has him in the best possible shape.
Santiago is nowhere to be seen. He was not even in Cotto's corner for the Mayorga fight or the training camp.
Thats a good thing. Cotto is stubborn enough to bring him in or just go alone with Landman.

Thats great news. LOL. I honestly hope that if Steward isnt a go, then he and his uncle work things out for this Margarito fight. I'm sure his uncle wants the shot at payback too.
Very bad timing to be switching trainers but in reality Stewards work with Cotto hasn't really shown me anything special. Cotto looking somewhat impressive in his last couple fights have a lot more to do with opponents rather than Steward. If you rewatch the second Cintron Margarito fight Emanuel gave Kermit very bad strategy imo.
It would be nice if Cotto went with Richardson but its more probable that he goes with his cheerleader Santiago.
