-2006- An afternoon down at Kronk
Stepping again through the red and gold door with the words written upon it, "many have found pain and fame....." I knew the greatness that has been produced in this small recreation center room. Entering the gym I am again greeted by Mr. Logan who extends his large hand to grasp mine as he gives me a smile and welcomes me inside.
With the rumors of Kronks closing in recent months I was curious as to what I was going to find going on inside of the legendary gym. Let me tell you that Kronk is alive and churning. The legendary heat of the small gym still swirls through the air. The young professionals still with the dreams of the title and Emmmanuel Stewart still helping them to find it inside of themselves.
Many civilians walk around the gym. Their presence not seen on a regular basis inside of the gym, their camera and equipment toted around as precious cargo as they look for that precious angle of which to catch a shot. The civilians were from H.B.O, there to cover Jermaine Taylor and his recently begun reign of the middleweight title.
There are many other fighters that they could focus on, fighters of the future, fighters of Emmanuel Stewarts future aswell as Kronks future. In the ring a young Middleweight, Andy Lee, who traveled from Limerick, Ireland to be with the Kronk team works hard looking to improve on his 2-0 beginning in the blood sport. Near the Mirror another one of Stewarts hopefulls shadowboxes and moves with precision and grace, its Gier Inge Jorgensen. A young veteran who traveled from Norway for the instruction that can be given by one man and one man alone. Jorgensen remains undefeated in his career with 22 wins in the European rings.
As I sit and watch many fighters continue pouring through the locker room doors into the gym. Corey Johnson, Ronald Hearns, Sechew Powell, Johnathon Banks, Octavio Lara. The young talent is quite impressive but the older and wiser talent still inhabits this gym. Thomas Hearns enters as does Milton McCrory, both Kronk legends in their own time.
As everything begins to get rolling, suddenly a loud voice echoes inside of the small cinder block room. It is Bam and he is announcing the arrival of a newly found pride of the boxing world. Clapping his hands together and yelling even louder he announces, "Jermaine has enetered the ring... June 17th and STILL champion of the wor..." Jermaine looks around the room and gives a smile as he sits infront of Emmanuel for the wrapping of his hands.
Looking around the room the staff of trainers has remained as it has for years. Walter Smitty, a former sparring partner of Joe Louis sits and watches the action beside of Mr. Logan. Billy Hearns has begun pad work with Ronald Hearns. You could not help but take notice as Ronald, working only his left hand, loudly smashed Jabs and hooks into the pads. Billy throws a shot that Ronald slips and returns fire, doubling up the hook from the body to the head. It is really amazing how much this young man has progressed in such a short time. But rapid progression like his for fighters seems to be the normal thing down at Kronk, where they take a lumpy piece of clay and work it into a fistic work of art with relative ease.
As I sit to watch the action I introduce myself to the man sitting beside me. He acknowledges and introduces himself as Lou DiBella, promoter of Jermaine Taylor and Sechew Powell. We chat for just a moment as he is pulled away by his never ending work and the cell phone. In the ring Andy Lee has been gloved up as has a new young amatuer prodigy of Kronks. That being J' Leon Love. As they begin their work I find that I am sitting next to his father and we get into a conversation about his boy. "You know he just started in August of last year boxing, he is 4-0 so far." Watching the young boxer move around the ring and working his angles I was thoroughly impressed with his young skills. Lee, a veteran of the amatuer game and recently turned professional begins to put pressure on his young foe, but cooly and gracefully Love handled what was thrown at him and then countered with his own. Andy Lee, having been ranked as high as #5 in the world as an amatuer was just working with the youngster, but he had to put alittle more into his game wanting to catch the young talent in Love.
Smash! Smash! Thud!!!! I look over as Billy Hearns has now taken the mitts up with another good prospect. The shots are not as fast as Ronald was throwing but they certainly had some power behind them. The shots were being fired by a 29 fight dreadlocked veteran named Terry Smith, from Little Rock, Arkansas. He came along with the Taylor camp for the work and has found it honor to be working at the legendary kronk gym.
As the young pro and kronk prodigy finished up their sparring Emannuel finished the wrap on Jermaines hands and he took the ring for shadowboxing. His movements coming slow at first as he loosened up but as the sweat began to bead on his forehead the intensity of the work aswell picked up. Doubling on hooks and rolling under imaginary shots Jermaine practiced his trade against an opponent that only he could see. In his mind Jermaine has done this a million times and then some. But with the title riding on every action of his body iinside of the gym his thoughts have become crystal clear aswell as cut and dry. The thought is that he knows that every fighter is coming for what is his. And in his mind he is working out the best plan to keep it his, that being his pride, the title.
Jermaine is gloved as is his sparring partner, an accomplished pro in his own right Corey Johnson. The two begin the session touching and moving while working the jabs and rythme. As the rounds pick up so does the intensity and the two are soon firing away at eachother with well schooled hooks, power shots and body blows. Corey hangs well with the champion, excepting shots but delivering them right back and then moving just as Taylors opponent will in his next fight. Taylors opponent is a great fighter named Winky Wright. Corey Johnson being ellusive aswell as a south paw like Wright hangs tough for a while but the champion soon begins to take control of the session.
Through the lockerroom door a young prospect, still in the amatuers, enters the gym. It is one Dominique Dalton, the reigning Silver Gloves National Champion. I see him and raise from my chair to greet him. I reach my hand to him as he takes it and wraps his other arm around my back. He steps back and smiles, "Hey its the ref, how are ya?" I smile and talk to him about his future plans. His plans are those that will have us writing about him well into the future.
In the ring, Taylor and Johnson continue their exchanges as Emmanuel walks the ring talking instruction into Jermaines ear. It seems that every time Emmanuel talks Jermaine is quick to respond, landing shot after shot against his foe. Stewart knows the game and Taylor knows this, working every word to perfection as he translates with his fists.
A young pro out of Kronk was the next to take the ring for sparring as he gloved up against a young pro from the Taylor camp named Tim Coleman. The Kronk youngster, Vernon Paris took quickly to the legendary Kronk wars as he and Coleman dug their toes into the canvas for a good old fashioned brawl. The two exchanged hook after hook as each man tried to force his will upon the other. Standing next to a Kronk trainer we began talking about what was transpiring in the ring. "They aint learnin' nothin' boxin that way." He continued, "If they would step off of each other they could work, they just in there bangin!" I understood where he was coming from but also understood the fighters mentality. We'll get to the working part soon enough, Vernon needed to let this out of towner know that this was his ring and that he was to be respected!
The last to glove up were Sechew Powell and Marlon Thomas. I have known of Sechew since his destruction of Kronk fighter Cornelious Bundrage, "K-9", on a Sho-Box The Next Generation showing. I have known Marlon for some 20 years as we used to spar often as kids in the ring. Marlon has grown emmensley as a fighter but has yet to reach the levels of Powell. Powell worked around Marlon in a gracefull manner as he unleashed hooks and crosses from his south paw stance. Powell is a man to look for in the near future. We sat and talked for awhile after his workout and I will have the article coming soon. This is one genuinely nice kid, his hopes and dreams laying with in himself. He knows exactly what he wants. For those of you who feared that the legendary kronk gym might become something of the past, fear not. Kronk is alive and well and flourishing now more then I have seen in recent years.
I didn't read your post.
what Mexicans has floyd made rich?
oscar was rich before floyd and oscar made floys his biggest pay day.
victor was champ and that is what floyd wanted a belt.
castilio was champ also.
baldomir is not mexican
JMM was a great fighter before floyd and easy tune up for floyd.
floyd does not make the mexicans rich, he knows he will sell ppv with mexican opponents.
so fvck paris.
He gets rich off Mexican fans too...only fights in May and September. Lets see how many PPV's he sells vs a non-mexican, non-golden boy opponent on the 4th of july?
Floyd needs Mexicans and Golden boy to succeed.
325,000 ppv buys vs Baldomir (argentinan) Top rank
374,000 ppv buys vs Judah (black american) Top rank
365,000 ppv buys vs gatti (Italian/canadian) Top rank
funny...but Paris is a baaaad man! He's improving alot thanks to Mayweather Sr. That will be a hell of a fight though. Vargas vs Paris.
IMO, Roger is overrated as a trainer...Everything floyd has learned his father thought him.
Roger didn't teach Floyd jr anything new...He just holds the mits and says beat that Mutha fakka 's AZZ...
Tim Coleman said Vernon smokes crack. Didn't pay it any thought, but to type all that up and post it- thinking it was a good idea? Vernon was definitely under the influence of something.
Talent is not the issue with Paris it is his head and not even really in the ring, it is all about discipline away from the ring.
To me dude will never be able to sustain or even handle success.
Still if he is kept on the task of being a fighter and can keep his nose clean, he has the talent to make something of himself.
I hope he can for his sake but knowing his past issue (having already been shot and stabbed on different occasions) I can't say I am optimistic for him.
Vernon Paris like i said ***** i am from detroit not not gay azz grand rapis
Vernon Paris *****r i got a squad call the A team we dont give a **** *****es
Vernon Paris YOU MIGHT THINK I AM YOUNG IN THE GAME BUT U FAULT VICTOR AND HE WASNT **** I AM 26-0 WITH 16 KO'S FIGHT ME U LIKE MAKING THOSE MEXICANS RICH MAKE YOUR BROTHERS RICH THATS WHY UR OWN HOME TOWN DONT LIKE UR STUPID AZZ
Uhhhh Paris couldn't even get by Tim Coleman, a fighter he described as a "damn vagabond."
What a clown.
EDIT: I had Paris and Coleman confused, they sound exactly the same in interviews haha.
