Whitaker, Floyd, Winky, Hopkins, Toney
I aint gonna front I dont know about old school fighters...
Nothing wrong with that. Its better than pretending you studied old time fighters like alot of posters do.
That's because the only Whitaker fight's you've seen are his last 2-3.
Its all subjective.....
I say Mayweather is better than Sweet Pea defensively because Mayweather defense isnt one dimensional.
Hes dominant out of the shoulder roll
Hes dominant out of the high guard
Hes dominant out on the ropes
Hes dominant using head movement and reflexes
Hes dominant in the pocket
Hell you name it...Floyd mastered it defensively.
Even as Mayweather loses his reflexes his defense is still the best in boxing right now and its not close. His defense is unreal.
Sweet Peas defense was amazing but it was mainly speed and reflexes. Kind of like Roy hes never mentioned on defensive list even though he was barely hit clean in his prime.
Mayweather is better then whitaker was defensively...as a matter of fact, he does everything better then sweet p did
That's because the only Whitaker fight's you've seen are his last 2-3.
Mayweather is better then whitaker was defensively...as a matter of fact, he does everything better then sweet p did EXCEPT SWEET P has BETTER RESUME
Make some correction for ya.
Locche
Pep
Whitaker
Ali (consider the weight here)
Benitez

Honorable mention:
Holydome (that big head is a offensive/defense all in one weapon)
Pep
Whitaker
Locche
Mayweather
Benitez
Not too sure on the order.
Honourable mentions;
Happy Lora
Freddie Welsh
James Toney
George Benton
And many others.
i like this list. Glad you gave Benton some props too. :)
Some locche magic for this thread.
Good addition of Young Griffo.
According to the readings on him he was one hell of a defensive wizard.
Would be able to make a better analysis if there was some footage of him, though.
Which is why he isn't in my list.
Yeah, he was apparently something special. Really interesting man, too. The thing is, I enjoy reading about boxing almost as much as watching it so I feel obliged to mention guys like Griffo despite being unable to personally testify to his greatness. Of all the sports, boxing's history seems to be the most steeped in legend -- inextricably so, even -- so I think we should do our best to perpetuate the stories and characters of years past whenever we can.
Fighters who have been knocked out or tko'd should not be put on the list. They might be good defensive fighters, but not the best if they have been knocked out or tko'd.
Locche, Griffo, Burley, Pep, Whitaker.

Nicolino Locche
Willie Pep
Pernell Whitaker
Floyd Mayweather
Wilfredo Benitez
Didn't put much thought into, just the generic top 5, some boxers who could be thrown in and out of the top 5 easily though.
Happy Lora (:luvbed:)
Freddie Welsh
James Toney
George Benton
Hilario Zapata
Marlon Starling
Miguel Canto
Roberto Duran
Jack Johnson
Willie Pep
Wilfred Benitez
Pernell Whitaker
Floyd Mayweather
In no particular order.
But Floyd's at the back of the bunch.
I think Mayweather has an argument to be at the top of the bunch. Solely in terms of defense.
But that's just me.
