"On the spectrum of sporting-events-as-occasions-for-rubbernecking metaphors, Margarito-Cotto II is a gruesome 10-car pileup in which it turns out all 10 cars were being driven by topless strippers. When the road is littered with smashed fenders, broken glass, and half-naked women, maybe you don’t feel good about slowing down to look, but you’re damned sure going to anyway."

Are you truly serious about this? Like I said, you Cotto stans amaze me sometimes, I honestly think you guys are above Pactards/Flomos.
DLH is a 6 division champion and Tito was 3. Does that make Oscar a much greater boxer?
FYI, Cotto ducked Mayweather at 140 as well.
PBF : but cotto lives in Puerto Rico..
we all know that fight didn't happen because of pbf's hate towards toprank fighters coz of arum..
cotto never duck pbf as far as i can remember.
I think Cotto is already a HOF the guy has done much more than some of the guys that are in. He is a 3 weight division champion and has fought the very best of his era except Mayweather who ducked him. I think this fight means more in terms of his standing among the best of his era and his standing among the greatest Puerto Rican boxers of all time.
cotto is a throwback warrior.. faced all the contenders and the best of his generation. best wishes to him..
unifying the 154 would generally put him on the discussion with tito.. because other holders were mexican and we all know how great the fight would be against this two nation.
Cotto is a people's champion, a man's man, and definitely a hall of famer. If we didn't have Pacquiao and Mayweather hogging all the attention, no one would question whether he was HOF worthy or not.
So you don't think Cotto has amassed a HoF worthy ledger? Or at least close enough?
I personally think he's on the fringes and if he can win impressively against the guy that popped his cherry, his only loss that isn't answered for is against Pacman and if his career when its all said and done features only a loss to Pacquaio, I'd say he'd had a pretty good career.
Who else can he beat outside of Pacquaio or Mayweather that would get him into the HoF, why not the guy that took him out?

I'm sorry but you deserve a couple of these. :twak::twak::twak:

Good article
But less significant than Martinez/Barker? That fight is an exhibition fight that just so happens to showcase the MW champ.
Marquez/Pac 3 is a good fight, but by no means historically relevant in the grand scheme of things, plus at a weight where JMM needs to eat twinkies to make weight. They both are HoF fighters at this point and the only relevant thing that can happen is that in the oft chance JMM wins, we'll miss out on Pac/Mayweather
Hopkins/Dawson is only relevant because BHop is the same age as my father, nothing more and nothing less. Dawson got beat up by a guy that Hopkins beat up two times, in his home town. So its not like is a fight with a lot of shine and luster as it may have been 2 years ago.
This fight is more relevant because of the redemption/revenge and its essentially a career defining fight for both fighters. I mean their first one is an instant classic and this one I believe will be too, although I don't think Cotto will go toe to toe much.
I think this will be Cotto's HoF fight, since he's probably on the fringes. If he loses, then he may not make it, if he does win and is impressive, then he may stamp his entrance in, because he'll exact revenge against an arch type that he is associated with having problems with, plus it'll guarantee to generate a trilogy, which I always believe every great fighter has, or should have.
I think boxing fans are way to harsh on shopworn fighters. This is the FIGHT GAME, not every fight can have two prime, undefeated fighters or else nobody would be fighting each other.
Some serious disrespect to Cotto's current abilities (I won't mention Margo because he deserves all the hate).
To me, Cotto-Margarito was a better fight than Hagler-Hearns. I know that's a ridiculous thing to say, but I look back and that fight was actually a defining moment in my life and long-term memory. These were two 147-pounders in a boxing ring, but they seemed like two giants from antiquity, doing battle over some unclaimed realm. It was amazing.
The rematch? Not so much...
I think there might be a chance that the fight could not live up to the hype. I mean how are you going to get 2 past prime fighters to replicate what they did the first time in their primes?
For me Ali-Frazier III is my favorite of the three fights.
Vazquez-Marquez III was on par with the 2 prior fights.
MAB-Morales III was better than II.
It happens.

Ali - Frazier 3 or Marquez - Vasquez 4
We'll see.

Absolutely amazing article. The storylines really are endless and one can get so caught up in them that it's easy to forget....the pure action that these two will produce could sell this fight alone(and did 3 years ago). Add in all of the drama(plus a hell of an undercard) and I don't see how anyone can't be uber hyped for this. I can guarantee one thing...the atmosphere at the Garden will be INSANE. Like Cotto-Judah insane.
The atmosphere will be like Bowe-Holyfield.
Crazy.
