Alright chaps. Heres our take on Mayweather v Ortiz. As always, Enjoy and join us at www.maineventboxing.wordpress.com for more of the same.
A sixteen month layoff, out of the ring legal troubles and concerns about ring rust all preceded the most controversial figure in boxing when he stepped into the ring last night. In four short rounds Floyd Mayweather (42-0-0 KO26) managed to dispel any concerns over his talent adding just a little more drama to his life in the process. Victor Ortiz (29-3-2 KO22) in comparison to his opponent had been very relaxed in the run up. Endless stories told about the street kid done good, a calm and jovial attitude toward things and as ever; promise of hurt in the ring.
When ring time came, both men looked peaked for the occasion
When the first round began youth versus experience finally collided. Ortiz circled his foe with high guard, bouncing in and out and looking to get forward. Mayweather, less mobile these days, held his ground and countered with lead rights, looking sharp and ready; thoughts of the money mans inactivity were already slipping from mind. Ortiz looked busier, but Mayweather probably took the round on accuracy alone, he wastes almost no energy.
In the second Ortiz came on a little stronger. Mayweather, still the more accurate and able to counter with left and rights was backed up a little as Ortiz had his moments. Into the third and the pace began to rise a little more. Ortiz was coming forward and getting caught in doing so. Mayweather was happy to back of when necessary and tag his young opponent as he came in, the lead right was clearly becoming a weapon for team Mayweather.
Despite proving to be a hitable target Ortiz was not disheartened. As the fourth round began Mayweather finally let go with some combos strafing Ortiz with left and rights to the body and head as the round began. After that the pace lulled a little before Ortiz was able to back Mayweather into the ropes and let his hands go much to the delight of the cheering crowd. For a moment we were both entertained and enthralled as the older man a(lthough clearly up on rounds)was being tested by the younger bull.
But that was only for a moment.
With the round dying out and Mayweather backed into the corner, Ortiz inexplicably decided to try and headbutt his opponent. Contact was enough for Mayweathers lip to be bloodied and a point to be immediately taken from Ortiz, to which he had no case to argue. Ortiz, apologetic almost to a fault went in and hugged Mayweather before Joe Cortez led the men to the center of the ring and called for the action to continue, and then with complete lack of focus, turned his head to press row. Ortiz having lost his focus completley took his eye of the fuming Mayweather. That decision proved final and fatal for the kid from Kansas. With Cortez failing in his duties and Ortiz criminaly naive in thinking Mayweather wouldnt pounce on a chance to sucker him, Floyd did as the rules allow. A left jab and straight right was delivered on Ortiz who was by no means ready to receive them and Ortiz was sent sprawling to the canvas. Cortez seemed as shocked as anyone but counted the fighter out. The fight was over and fans were robbed of what looked like being some great rounds of entertainment.
Add the this a red-blooded blow up by Mayweather in the post fight interview with Larry Merchant and the pantomime was complete. Mayweather is back, his talent remains if not his temperament. Ortiz not without fault himself can watch on you tube as millions will in years to come at how his lack of focus, discipline and youthful naivety cost him his WBC Welterweight belt. In short, never take your eye of the prize-fighter.
