I just re watched the gamboa-ponce fight this time it I saw it with HBO commentating and they were way too picky against gamboa from the 2nd round on. They were trying to pretend like it was even close and that it was embarrassing gamboa didn't win in 1 round like juanma did (lucky punch).
The only person that wasn't biased was harold letterman that had gamboa winning all 8 rounds up to the stoppage.
Anyway fights on youtube now just search for it if you missed it
hbo commentators are ridiculous on gamboa fights is always the same crap if gamboa doesnt ko the opponent on 1 round or 5 rounds they go all haterade on them, i remember the solis fight they started hating on gamboa on this first round because he wasnt being aggressive then gamboa knocks down solis and they act like is a complete different fighter, is ridiculous
Agreed. They can't respect a fighter learning all aspects of boxing and what it takes to become a complete fighter. They and most people want to see slug fests...mostly fighters without much ability and obviously don't care if they lose or not...Just as long as they "please the crowd"!
There's no longevity in those type of fighters and HBO doesn't really care...take out the old and bring in the new. As long as you bring us excitement...if not, we'll bad mouth you and look toward another crowd pleaser...EVEN THOUGH YOU"RE STILL WINNING!
Fughkin sick and tired of HBO's commentating. They always have to have a motive when covering a fight. They can't just let us enjoy the show, they have to pollute the broadcast with their biased bullsh*t.
Sure it's business but they abuse their power and do it foolishly, IMO. The public is catching on more and more. HBO's production is top notch but they DESTROY the shows by having idiots like Max on there trying to one-up each other and rambling on about something instead of doing the play-by-play.
I think ESPN should pull a fast one on them and start getting in on promoting and broadcasting big fights.
Can't underestimate the power of sportscenter.
Gamboa is 70% style. 30% substance.
Its a shame people are fooled by all that posing he does. When u actually look at how effective he is, and how hard he works, there is a lot to be desired. He is capable, but prefers to showboat.
I can understand HBO being frustrated by a POTENTIALLY great talent who only fights in spurts.
That is true. Gamboa is moving up in weight. 130 lbs and 135 lbs he is going to start facing bigger and TALLER opponents. He won't just be fighting 5'4 or 5'7 fighters. He might just face someone like a Diego Corrales or a Brandon Rios type of fighter. Gamboa had been knockdown already against smaller men.
So, I think Gamboa has the right ideo of mixing it up once in a while.

It's all good. Yuri is doing what he has to do; he's finding his wings as a professional. You better believe that the explosive powerhouse that his fans know and love will re-emerge soon enough. The first guy he fights at 130 will probably catch a taste of the old "Ciclon". Gamboa is not a flash in the pan. The way he dominated Ponce De Leon, while not as exciting as we've become used to seeing, is just another way he can win.
I think Gamboa is just coming into his own as an overall fighter. Yea, he's probably not as explosive when he first came on the scene, but you have to admit you see maturity in his style. He's still really quick, still has power. It seems like his defense has gotten much better and he's taking lesser risks and just maintaining the game plan.
Also, styles make fights. When he gets in there with the Mikey Garcia, Juan Mas of the world, you'll see fireworks.
This right here.
I think Gamboa was trying to show his boxing side. He wanted to let people know that he wasn't just a swarmer and that he has skills too.
Gamboa even said that he wanted to put more rounds in. I saw it too.
Gamboa was putting in more combinations and trying to do some footwork. He wasn't the same guy who fought Salido and Solis. He is definitely trying to improve his skills and techniques.
Also, Gamboa might be preparing for the heavier weight class where his power might not transfer or it might. He might just be trying to do different things before he faces someone he just can't win by swarming or overpowering.
