I noticed that he had his feet spread further than Shanes were. Which makes you less mobile. He didn't have the bounce & latteral movement that he should have. Also in round 1 of their fight he pulled straight back on a Mosley lounge in. Then Mosley stopped & they resumed fighting in the center of the ring. I've also noticed Floyd looked off balance in the begining of the Judah fight until Judah started to slow after round 4 (southpaw stance).
I pointed these things out because Ortiz in the Berto fight was making sure that he got off 1st & last. Even when he lounged in & Berto tried to move & when he thought he had created distance Ortiz was still firing away. I'm telling you guys again that Ortiz is gonna catch Floyd with something big. If he comes into this fight like how he did with Berto, jaws are going to be dropping all over the place.
IMO, this fight really isn't any different from the Berto fight for Ortiz. He was supposed to get beaten then, just like he is now. I know a lot of fans are gonna start saying that berto was overhyped anyway, which in a sense he was. But no one can sit there & say that Ortiz wasn't the heavy underdog, anyway. The difference of course being that Ortiz should be very confident in his ability this time & will be out to prove it.
This is what I don't understand? It's a memorable occasion when Mayweather gets caught... but somehow Pacquiao's in a class of his own.
Pacquiao's, have, and will continue to come and go in boxing. It'll be rare to see another Floyd Mayweather Jr. in boxing, stylistically.
I'm not knocking Floyd. Both fighters as of RIGHT NOW are special in their own right and notches above all other fighters. It's been years since Mayweather has been in a competitive fight, the same goes for Pacquiao (though Pacquiao's was more recent in early 2008).
Let's not forget Mayweather is rarely caught, so when he gets caught. It's a memorable occasion.
And as of right now, there is no one out there that matches those criterias more perfectly than Pacquiao. They are both in a class of their own. Everybody is just competing for third place...

Floyd's legs are in bad shape - was interesting to see Max call him out on it during face-off. Dangerous fight for Floyd because he's going to have to stand and trade. And yes, he will get caught. Will see what happens when that occurs.
If you get caught with Mosley's best punch while throwing a left hook (and thus being countered), OF COURSE you're gonna' be on queer street.
Hell, Margarito wasn't wobbled for a long while, but that's because his fighting style carries the "Okay, brace yourself, you're going in!" and prepare to get punched 20 times per minute. Floyd's flinching, pulling, slipping...so naturally things are going to look astonishing when he gets tagged.
Let's not forget Mayweather is rarely caught, so when he gets caught. It's a memorable occasion.
You can't discredit Mayweather for picking this fight. The reason why he catches so much flack is because everyone's looking for a fight where he'll be the underdog or damn near his opponent's level WHILE BEING A FINANCIAL ATTRACTION. And as of right now, there is no one out there that matches those criterias more perfectly than Pacquiao. They are both in a class of their own. Everybody is just competing for third place...
Anyway, regarding the fight...
Since the fight was signed, I thought Ortiz was a best opponent Floyd was facing since De la Hoya back in 2007. Victor Ortiz is bigger than Hatton, probably just as explosive as him and has better one-punch power. He's also bigger than Márquez and is actually a fresh fighter and young one at that. On top of all this, he's a southpaw. So to discredit Floyd for picking Ortiz as a comeback fight is just wrong. Victor Ortiz has the physical tools to beat Mayweather if he fights his absolute best. Mayweather's taking layoff after layoff, and some skeptics believe that one of these days, as it's happened before, Floyd Mayweather will find himself in the ring a day too old, a smidge too slow, and a bit too weak...just enough for Ortiz to beat him.
On the other hand, Floyd's longevity is based on his solid fundamentals and for his proven record as ALWAYS coming out on top AND performing better when the going gets tough. Props to Ortiz for upsetting Berto, but Berto tends to be uncoordinated with his punches and he was able to catch Ortiz several times in the fight. Now I ask you: Couldn't Floyd be able to do that? Just throwing that out there. People talk about Ortiz knocking Floyd out, and while that COULD happen (in the first four rounds), I really wouldn't place chips on it. Ortiz has knocked DOWN opponents, but he didn't knock out Berto, nor Peterson, nor Campbell...how the hell is he going to knock out a fighter whose strong suit is defense? Bet on Ortiz knocking Floyd down, but not out...
Conventional wisdom says that Mayweather will beat Ortiz in a fairly wide decision while showing some slight hinderance in reflexes and speed in his punches. That's being humble. As usual, expecting boxingscene to discredit Ortiz as just another bum and if he DOES knock Floyd out, expect the boards to crash for a long time...a very long time.
This is why I don't understand why people think Mayweather just used his legs to dance around the ring. Most of his career he hasn't fought like that. N'dou, Jesus Chavez, Burton, Gatti. All fights when he was much younger. If his legs were truly gone they would have failed him in that second round against Mosley.
But we'll have to see Saturday if he's that same fighter. So far I haven't seen anything that says otherwise.
Mayweather has, in the past, shown the ability to stand his ground, to fight in the pocket and to move when he's needed to. Key being "when he's needed to." Interesting to see if they're still there when the situation calls for it.
Why was Hatton smaller and weaker - I don't get that till today - Hatton is a 140 pounder his whole life and walks around at I don't know 180 pounds??? *smile* Mayweather at the time was a small Welterweight - Mayweather became a real welterweight after his 2 year layoff - he couldn't even make 144 anymore for Marquez - before he was small - Hatton had won a title at 147 as well - ain't looked good but he never did against somebody with chin and some boxing skill... and I personally ain't never felt that Hatton had a chance - Floyd let him come and it was probably even after 6 rounds but after that Floyd broke him down - and it would have ended in 9-3 rounds which isn't so competive... nothing in the ring against Hatton happened without Floyd allowing it - just rewatch the tape - he knew what he was doing Bush - just rewatch it...
Of course Ortiz has a chance - everyone does if they want to - I agree - Marquez was really smaller - Mosley wanted too but he was mentally drained after 3 rounds - it wasn't because Mayweather threw 100 punches - the same will happen to Ortiz - if you fight a fighter like Mayweather who is so good defensively - it drains you mentally if you have no success and get hit with shots... I'm not hating on the fight by any means I just don't think that like I said Pacquiao or Mayweather can be beaten except by each other - but as long as they don't find each other it's fine if they fight a young, hungry fighter who actually comes and probably really believes that he can win the fight... I'm all for it - I just don't see that Ortiz can beat him - the first few rounds should be interesting... I mean we shouldn't forget even though it always goes out of the window - Floyd has heart - until now I ain't saw no one taking his heart... so still has it - he always, always trains hard and comes in shape - this is his life - he probably is a kid, dumb in many things - but boxing is his life and he won't screw himself in that dude - but I'm looking forward and I'm excited
Hatton was smaller & weaker. In his welterweight debut he was damn near dominated the entire fight with Collazo minus the early kd. he got a gift that night. He was a career jr welterweight who went back down there because he clearly couldn't compete at 147 like he could at 140. No need to beat around the bush with the Bushbaby. We know why he returned to 140.
Now being that Floyd taking the Mosley fight when he did was the biggest & most important welterweight fight at the time, I don't like to discredit Floyd's performance. But Mosley was done on the elite level by the time that fight took place. Drained mentally, he was huffing & puffing from the middle of the 2nd round when he landed the 2 right hands & spent himself trying to finish. Yeah the Marquez fight was simply horrible.
Good thread. Ortiz's chances depend on whether mayweather is the same fighter we are accustomed to seeing. If he resembles his old form it shouldn't be a close fight to be honest. I have seen Floyd slow down a little bit in recent years, I noticed it in the mosley fight and in his fight against Oscar. But that's to be expected he's getting older but with that said he still trains like a maniac and is dedicated to his craft. We shall see, I don't think he is in his prime but I believe he should have plenty enough left in the tank to destroy that quit against a 140 pounder.
Nice to see you back sir.
Hey JROOOOOOOOOOOO how is it going my maaaaaaaaaaaaan - yeah, many things changed in my life but I felt like dropping in :-) I always read boxingscene but I ain't visited the forums anymore - it's too much of Flomos and Pactards crowding everything *smile* I always enjoy a good boxing conversation but with most of them it is pretty hard - but you know that - how is life going for you???
By the way I want to say I'm also looking forward to Marquez-Pacquiao - I know that Marquez is old and not his weight - but Marquez will go down swinging I know that - and Marquez has some skills - he has the timing and everything - of course we have to see if his chin can take the 144 bombs of Pacquiao *smile* but for as long as it last it should be thrilling
I'm not so sure.
I mean, Floyd stood in the pocket for most of the fight when he was in his early 20's against Chavez. He could have got on his bike but he decided not to.
Floyd's not really a dancer anyway, he's stood his ground with stronger opponents as early as the Olympics.
I don't think his legs are in bad shape at all personally. Atleast nothing indicates that to me.
I think Floyd willingly stands his ground at times, like I said he's never really been a dancer, he can beat fighters inside if he pleases.
As far as I'm concerned Mayweather hasn't een forced to stand his ground due to his legs being shot. Atleast in recent years.
Again I guess we'll see.

I'm not saying Floyd's chin is bad & I'm not questioning that. But the facts are Floyd hasn't been in a competitive fights since Hatton. Who was smaller & weaker than Floyd. Ortiz is bigger & we'll find out who's stronger. Floyd is 34 & coming off of another long layoff. Ortiz has much more left in the tank than Mosley & Marquez did, respectively. In my opinion, Ortiz has a greater chance of winning than Floyd's last 3-5 opponents combined. Anyway bookmark this tread, everyone, Floyd is in for a major fight.

Berto wasn't overrated - he just never learned to use his skill - the difference is and that Mayweather knows how to do it - Berto has fast hands but is nowhere near the footspeed of Mayweather - that's what puts guys like Mayweather and Pacquiao apart from the others...
Floyd knew how he could fight Mosley because he knew Mosley - he knew how to fight Judah because he knew Judah - he got hit yes - it happens especially against guys who punch STRAIGHT - Ortiz can punch straight but if he fights the way like against Berto he will use a lot of hooks and uppercuts that won't cut it... and by the way like I said even if he catches Mayweather with something big - Mayweather's chin is pretty alright - I don't think that Pacquiao/Ortiz/Khan/Williams and a lot of others would have taken the two right hands from Shane and would have been able to continue without basically no problem...
Another oberservation from my part - ppl say he was hurt against Corley - against Mosley - against Judah - did u ever notice that Floyd ain't never felt like that - I'm not talking about what he said but what he did in the ring - every guy who HURT him... he went even closer to them and took the fight to him - his legs felt it yeah - but his head was still clear - when a fighter gets hurt he usually moves away from an opponent - Cotto does it - even Margarito moved away from Mosley in the end as he was hurt, Gatti moved away if hurt etc. - and everyone else too - so Mayweather felt the shots but it only made him more determined and he came forward even more - that's not a sign of a fighter that is hurt to me folks - but everybody is entitled to his opinion.
He had a long layoff and he will feel the power of Ortiz at the beginning because he ain't used to getting hit anymore - but Ortiz couldn't finish off fighters like Berto, Campbell etc. so yes physically he is strong but he is not a one punch ko artist and I see no reason why Floyd's chin should be ranked low... I've seen Pacquiao hurt way more and often as Floyd and I never seen anyone question his chin...

I thought about that earlier this week; what if Ortiz just went for broke from the opening bell and gave all he had within the first three rounds?
The only thing about that is that I think we all underestimate Mayweather's punching power. No, he may not have that one punch power that can hurt a fighter or buckle them at the very least, but everybody (aside Augustus and Baldomir) has clearly been bothered when Mayweather lands.
there is a chance he will do that but its a dumb move cuz floyd will counter punch him at will !
The bold is how I roll too. I got this feeling bro. Ortiz is gonna come out the gate blazing, like one of those championship bulls & Floyd will be overwhelmed by him. I just got that feeling. Kinda like what ward did to Kessler.

Floyd-Mosley and Ortiz-Berto fights are currently on On Demand if you're a Comcast subscriber. I've fight both fights two times each yesterday, and I don't think Floyd is going to have any problems bouncing backward when Ortiz lunging in.
I'm too much of Shane fan to watch the fight with Floyd again...I think I watched it just once afterwards...so I can't really say if Floyd was steady on his wheels or not...all I know, from the opposite team's perspective it looked like he was on his game....now as far a s Vic catching Floyd, would love to see that....in fact I CAN see that...Floyd getting dropped is ANOTHER thing I can see happening...the ONLY thing I can't see is Vic winning....but I'm not counting him out by any means....I'm a huge fan of the UPSET....thats how I roll....being SMART makes me put money on Floyd and Pac to stop their next dance partners...but the heart wanna see Vic and JMM come through in a blaze of glory :boxing:

I don't see how.
In the Berto fight did Ortiz have to endure several draining media days?
Did Ortiz have tons of camera's in his gym contantly?
Did he have this amount of spotlight on him with people watching his every move?
The media all over him?
Was the stage this big or was it just one of his normal fights?
It's really not the same.
that can go either way, it can disrupt him and cause him to be unfocused or it can really motivate him, the latter will pose big problem to his opponent come fight night. everything's going for ortiz really, he thrives being underdog.
Even at 140, Floyd didn't used that much lateral movement like he has in the lower weight divisions. HBO's commentating crew pointed it out when Floyd fought Henry Bruseles.
