BILOXI, MS ~ Andre Berto returned to the ring last night for the first time since his decision loss last April to Victor Ortiz. Berto stopped the game but overmatched Jan Zaveck after five rounds when Zaveck could no longer see clearly through a swollen, badly cut right eye. It was a must-win situation for Berto and he got the job done in a fight where a loss would have been a devastating setback to his career, and to his marketability as a fighter. Berto answered his critics with a strong entertaining performance, despite the fact that Zaveck appeared to be turning the tide when his right eye was cut and nearly closed in the 5th, forcing the stoppage.
Berto took the first three rounds with his speed, athleticism, and aggressiveness. He hit Zaveck at will to the head and body, and took little in return from the defending champion. It appeared that Zaveck had no answer for Berto and would be lucky to go the distance. Things changed in the forth however when Berto appeared to slow down a bit and the fighting went to the inside, where Zaveck was surprisingly effective at hitting Berto with many good rights to the head, winning the round convincingly. The fifth was similar to the fourth for Zaveck except for the fact that Berto opened a nasty gash over Zaveck's right eye which nearly swelled shut.
The cut, combined with the swelling caused Zaveck's corner to stop the fight between rounds. Zaveck wanted to continue although it appeared he was having difficulty seeing out of either eye, both of which were cut. It was a good stoppage, and a good win for Berto who picked up the IBF welterweight title, and kept himself firmly in the mix at welterweight. After the fight, Berto called out Victor Ortiz for a rematch, which seems like a natural given how excellent their first fight was.
"Victor Ortiz and I can definitely do it again."

Just watched it again in HD.
Definitely punches that busted up and opened up Zaveck's face.
Berto really put a whoopin on him in the last half of the 5th.
Good stoppage.
Zaveck knows how badly he is injured in the corner, he screams out in frustration over it, and at one point when they have an endswell over his right eye, a panicked look comes over his left eye that tells me he could not see out of that one either.
Really good fight, good showing by BOTH fighters.
Disagree. Whenever there was infighting in the first three rounds, Zaveck got the better of it. Zaveck realized it and made that adjustment in the 4th and 5th.
I think Zaveck's ability (in the 4th and 5th) to take advantage of his superior infighting was more a case of Berto getting a bit winded than Zaveck making any particular adjustment. In the 4th when Berto slowed, Zaveck's advantage was just that much more pronounced because Berto was right there to be hit. Same with the 5th more or less except Berto made it a closer round (adjustment on his part?) and busted Zaveck up pretty bad with the cuts/swelling. So the way I see it, it was a good win for Berto because he fought his fight for the first three rounds, looked pretty good doing it, and then overcame the advances of Zaveck to win the thing.
In the 4th and 5th, yes.
In the first 3, not so much.

Took little in return? Zaveck was beating the crap out of him every time they got close.
He didn't earn a stoppage, and was gassing a little, so it can't be called a good win. It was a close half fight that ended on a cut a headbutt caused.

I think Berto even though it was clear he was winded, could have caught his second wind, even though berto was getting hit, I saw zaveck the one who would have ended up being stopped. he was getting hi too much by hard punches. zavecks punches were short arm punches most of the time.
didn't really answer any questions, but got more questions... if zaveck didn't get cut, he would've given berto all he could've handled in the 2nd half of the fight.
Tell me more, I'm just reporting on what I saw, how it seemed to me.

Lederman scorecards
He was litteraly changing the scores of rounds, in every few rounds. For example, in the first round he had Zaveck on 10 - 9, but by the fourth, he had him on 9 - 10. This is something that should not happen, of course.
Blind referee
He was standing right next to two of them, when the headbuts happened. Zaveck has even looked at him a second after if happened, but he saw "nothing".
Might just be me, but I see Berto as sort of a Jermaine Taylor type, who starts out fast, strong and aggressive but punches himself out and allows his opponents to take over later in the fight. One day, Berto will meet his Pavlik, Froch and Abraham.
I like that comparison, and that came to mind for me a few times last night while I was just dumbstruck listening to HBO compare Andre Berto to Sugar Ray Leonard and Meldrick Taylor. Berto like Leonard? Sure, the Leonard who fought Camacho. Berto like Taylor? Sure, like the one who fought Espana. They seem to go a little overboard at HBO about Berto.

Seemed like Berto expended a lot of energy in the first three rounds, and was slowing down which gave Zaveck his chance, and he was taking it! It would have been VERY interesting if not for the cut.
Heya bro not saying you aren't right but it looks like you haven't really seen any recent things that have been circulating:
- Clear head butt by Berto
- Blind REF in the ring not seeing the headbutts at all
- By compubox stats Zavec was well ahead
- HBO doing some strange stuff with the Lederman cards
Imo Zavec won rounds 1 and 4 for sure, the 5th if there hadn't been that headbutt. I see it as an even fight to that point and Berto even promised a rematch to Zavec, which we know will never happen because he promised the same to Collazo.
Dibella lines the bums up and I knock them out!

After the fight, I went to bed.
Woke up, and wrote what came to my mind.
Yeah, before the stoppage, I thought Berto was on a downhill slide. No defense from Berto at all and very inefficient punches.
Berto 89 out of 358 punches landed
Zaveck 109 out of 268 punches landed
