Berto stops Jan Zaveck with headbutt.
Was he afraid of fair battle? HBO blinked and didn't see it?
I was impressed with what I saw out of Zaveck. He gained a fan last night. It looked like he was coming on strong as the fight went on. To be honest I think he would of pulled off the win. I felt bad that he lost his title the way he did. Hopefully we see a rematch, because I don't think it's right to go out on a loss like that.
I'm all for protecting your fighter from getting seriously hurt but this is prize fighting after all - fighters are gonna get swollen eyes, cuts, bumps, bruises, you name it. It's like Zaveck's corner didn't even try to work on the eye to reduce the swelling. I'm disappointed in the way they just gave up; especially in light of what was transpiring in the last few rounds. Zavec was having some success fighting inside and the fight may or may not having been turning around in his favor...
zaveck had a big cut on his eyelid, and the swelling was getting worse under his eye, he would have fought berto with one eye. i think his left eye was cut as well, not too sure. i'm not sure if it was a headbutt or punch, but i've never recalled anyone getting their eyelid cut clean like a straight line recently like this one, from a punch.

idk, dude's eyelids were cut, i wouldn't think berto's shots were capable of that. either way, berto won the belt, there is nothing anyone could do about it now. i hope they give him a rematch, i would like to see how the later rounds would play out. that, or an american fight with a top WW, that'd be good. i hope we see zaveck in the states again.
Yes, it is a shame that Zaveck's corner has ended the fight. Zaveck was clearly up for another round as he said, but the corner has called it over.
However, it has to be said, that it was a headbut which has caused a major damage under Zaveck's right eye. Even after the corner has "finished" his work from the fifth round, Zaveck could not see anything through his right eye. It is true that Zaveck's cutman does not have a clue about what he is doing, but the damage was pretty bad. Zaveck would of risked a lot, if he has continued.
However, i still think that he would have a chance, if he would of survived the sixth round without anymore damage being caused to his face. Zaveck is a mature and big hearted fighter, who knows what he is doing. Anyway, nobody is to blame there, it was an unfortunate event, which has caused this fight to result in a TKO. We could see a very interesting fight, if there would be no headbut.
Finally...........
Instead of all the Berto negativity there is a glimpse this seems to be vastly overlooked in that there have been numerous other examples fairly recently in which fighters and corners had the mentatlity of you can still win it go on out and make it happen seems that Zavek corner didn't believe this to be the case and erroed on the side of caution but to reliquish your belt that quickly is dissappointing

hmmmm.. interesting... good gifs. i didnt see the headbutts. they were trading bombs, and zavek didnt complain of headbutts... so i figured everything was all good.
compubox shows what the deal really was... it was a close fight, sucks for zavek to lose his belt in that manner. zavek was turning it up the last half.
great comeback for berto, but if it went to 12 rounds the numbers were favoring zavek.
What a letdown last night's fight turned out to be. I was genuinely excited about this fight because I knew Zaveck was a live underdog and the potential was there for the upset....
The fight itself was as I thought it would be. Berto looked incredibly sharp early on throwing some fast hard punches that had some heat on them. Zaveck to his credit used his 'gloves up crouching defense' to weather a lot of Berto's flurries and power punches. Zaveck starting mounting his own offense counter punching Berto and working inside effectively. In other words, this was close competitive fast paced exciting fight.
Well that all ended after round 5. Whether it was from a punch or headbutt (I haven't rewatched the fight yet), Zaveck's eye was in pretty bad shape - which sets up my point.
Why the fukkk did Zaveck's corner pull the plug on the fight so quickly? I mean, there was so much on the line with this fight. Not only was Zaveck putting his IBF title on the line, he was also fighting for future mega fights with the other stars of the ww division....
At least give the guy another round to see if he can fight through the adversity and continue the onslaught on Berto. In my mind, round 6 could've went either of two ways: Zaveck would have taken punishment from Berto leading to a KO or TKO or Zaveck would have continued where he left off keeping the fight competitive and up for grabs...
IMO this was a bad stoppage, a premature stoppage that robbed Zaveck of the chance to possibly upset Berto...

Even though Ortiz landed hard shots on Berto for 12 rounds and he was there till the end this guy who isn't known as a puncher was going to stop him
Really.?
Go watch Wolak last fight with his swole eye and stop already Zavek showed his merit and that he's a solid contender
Berto was exhausted more than usual (maybe cause he used up all his energy in the early rounds), not saying Zaveck was going to brutalize him and stop him type of TKO. Berto looked so gone already by the early rounds I could see Zaveck pouring on shots and the ref stopping it to save the exhausted Berto, kind of like Calzaghe used to get his TKO's. The Ortiz fight looked different because Berto never fought so aggressively besides the 6th, he was in survival mode after the 6th round and never used up a lot of energy throughout the fight like he did in the early rounds against Zaveck. Just a possibility, of course another possibility could have been Berto laying him out.
The HBO crew making me sick, Berto was on his way to losing a UD or possibly getting TKO'd if he wasn't for that huge deformed forehead of his.

well atleast we all agree the headbutting happened, as to how much damage it did. i think enough, and that was the main reason for stoppage. remember those rounds were supposed to be berto's anyway, not that hard to look impresive. berto is a 6 round fighter.
the happenings could have gone either way after that.
i have no problem with that, i would sign up for a rematch any day. either way, i dont see how there should be a mandatory rematch.
Well to the average fan it seems like rough justice that the belt-holder, the world champion (and vet of 35) should fly 7,000 miles to the challenger's home-town, be in the fight, only to have it ended by cut through clash of heads, losing his belt with no rematch. There's a sense of injustice so people are going to complain.
One uppercut from Maidana made Morales' eye swell up in 1 round.
There was also the Rodriguez-Wolak fight when his eye swelled up during the round to groetesque proportions yet in both instances the fighter and his corner took the the stance of he still the other eye
Was there a headbutt yeah it looked like his head grazed Jan face under his eye on the cheek which could of caused the eye to swell but that was a soft touch head butt if ever there was not that bad in terms of scale
So what about his cut above the eye and his left eye that was starting to close those seemed to be caused by punches just maybe so taking that into account what gives anyone the impression his face was going to hold for 7 more rounds when it was already begining to look distorted his corner sure didn't seem to have the confidence that it would or be able to avoid taking the flack he was recieving so they stopped it and looked to fight another day which is fine
As for the punch stats why even have judges why not just go to the punch stats at the end of the fight and render the decision from that and just disregard what you saw live as the fight was taking place and how your viewpoint lead you to the decsion of who was being more effective, i'll take what my eyes tell me over those #'s there not always the most accurate depiction as it takes the whole fight where a guy could land a ton of blows in one round and pad his punch #'s this isn't the amatuers.
It is nice to have but not the end all be all.
