Just saw some clips of this guy and admit I never heard of him until the other day. I have to say he looks (not physically) like the real deal. I am surprised more people aren't throwing his name around. What I have seen (limited at best) he could give ANY of the top HWY right now a serious go! I want to see this cat stateside ASAP!
Clip of Samuel Peter KO! WOW!
Helenius reminds me of Gerry Cooney. Destroying older used up fighters like Liakhovic and Brewster. He has a long way to go before they shove a Klitschko fight down our throat.
I think this is the wrong way to beat a Klitschko. I think the way to do it is to come in as a huge nobody and a prospect. Why?
Klitschko's are very very smart guys. PhD, avid Chess Players. The more that they see you fight the more flaws they see in your game plan. They already have a strategy on Helenius, they keep notes of anyone coming up that might poses a challenge.
You do what Pirog did to Jacobs, come in with a style that is WTF?.
If they keep progressing Helenius against mid-level competition you know the Klitschko's have tape on every single fighter and they are huge Boxing fans. You know they were watching Saturday. They already know how to beat him right now. Why give them opportunity to gather even more tape on you? Thats suicide.
Helenius doesnt have the same technical abilities as Wlad, I doubt at this stage of his career he can improve that. Thats why everyone is losing to them. They think okay let me go slowly and when Im ready Ill fight a Klitschko. What happens? Nobody ever wins a round.
But if you put Helenius with just 15 fights into the ring with Wlad it might be a huge problem because they wont have enough data on Helenius to figure out ALL his flaws and Helenius can come in with a new crazy style or technique to confuse Wlad/Vitali.
I doubt if you advance him over 5-6 fights and when he is at 23-0 or 24-0 he will be able to change his style when fighting a Klitschko
You gotta do something they wont expect, like in chess, they are 10 steps ahead, so gotta throw a curv-ball.
I'll take experience over a surprise factor because as you said, the Klitschko brothers are true professionals and will prepare for everyone from the worst challengers to the best as they've shown in the past.
Right now the surprise factor of Helenius fighting a Klitschko will be far greater than Klitschko fighting a Helenius. Besides, it's not as if Helenius is an unknown, his fights are out there and his punching power is well known.
The big factor for Helenius is his power and that's one attribute that will remain throughout his career. Let him grow as a fighter a little more and let the Klitschko brothers possibly lose a step, and we will have a fight on our hands. I think the scenario of Helenius beating either of the Klitschko brother is wishful thinking at this stage though. The most I hope for him is a world title shot where he performs valiantly, win or lose.
It took 9 rounds.Peter left himself wide open each time, and the punches themselves didn't look to be anything special. So maybe this guy has massive power.
But Peter is definitely finished. He can't take what looked like a very ordinary punch.
I'm not saying that Helenius will beat Wlad at this point. No one in the division would. However, I think Helenius has the tools and mindset to push Wlad to brink or at least create some awkward moments for him. Also, I think Helenius has room to improve and that he hasn't reached his full potential yet and would be well served to get a couple more good wins under his belt...
No, you still gotta have skills and beat SOMEONE. Wilder is a complete bum right now. Helenius best chance to beat a Klitschko is right now, before they have tape on all his fights and all his weaknesses. What is he going to improve?
Why not this way? The regular way fails because all day every day during training camp they have video's playing of the fighter they are fighting and they know all the weaknesses.
Yea its a crazy idea, but its crazy enough to confuse them. how are they gonna know what to look out for? What your weakness is? If you only have a few clips of your fights.
Got a better idea? progress Helenius until he is 30-0? Wlad/Vitali datamine all the fights, find his weakness and outbox him for 12 rounds onto a 119-109 decision?
It's a dumb idea. Every fight Helenius gets more experience. Experience is a really important thing for a fighter. It's when skills that you train in the gym get used in real time combat. The more experience the better. And fighting Wald at his current peak is a bad idea. He can gain experience and wait for Wlad to slow down.
Anyways it's all moot because there's no way he's winning that fight.
Of the numerous hw prospects I've followed through the years now, Rob Helenius seems like the more promising one. In just 16 pro fights, he's fought and beaten impressively, some very good competition. And he seems like he's getting better and more confident in each successive fight. IMO he's the biggest threat to the KBros right now. He's got devastating power, decent boxing sklills, he's patient and paces himself, he's got a good chin and he's good finisher. His style is also very entertaining and fan friendly.. Really, what's there not to like about this guy?
Mixed truth with hype here.
He's the best of the prospects, but really nothing that either Klitschko has to fear. The gulf between champion and contender is ridiculous in the HW division -- and the bridge between the two is too short for any real learning curve to take place.
I think the course he's taking is the right one. He's been fighting relatively frequently against top quality opponents and as a result he's developing into a decent solid fighter. I think we'll see him fight 2-3 times before he gets into the ring with one of the KBros and by that time, he'll be ready...
The thing I see with Helenius is that he has that killer instinct and is comfortable in the ring. Against Wlad or Vitali you have to be offensive minded, you can't fight afraid, you have to have good skills, power and size. Helenius has all that..
Everyone has a good gameplan against the Klitschko's. Until they start getting hit in the face from jabs, no problem right? He throws a Jab I will just get inside? Oh there is the straight right, hmmm that kinda hurts. Im going to stay away from that one, x12rounds.
I think the way to beat Wlad is someone with a Iron Chin who is not afraid of getting hit and will be willing to eat 10 jabs and 5 straight rights just to get inside for a few punches. Is there someone out there willing to do it?
Do you think Helenius could stay in the pocket with Wlad and trade shots?
Everyone has a gameplan, its not like people dont plan. But Wlad makes everyone look like a bum when they fight, its not that the opponents are bad, its because Wlad is a master chess player and knows what moves to make. he isnt flashy, he is just smarter

So going on your logic, Deontay Wilder has a better chance at beating one of the K Bros, than does Robert Helenius, because he's been fighting nobodies and there isn't a lot of tape of him out there? Fukking retarded, so fukking retarded..

From what I've read of Helenius and his management, they have no intention of rushing him. Fights against the likes of Liakhovich, Peter and Brewster were calculated moves based on his strengths against those type of fighters. There are no delusions of him being a Klitschko conqueror as of yet, although they certainly hope that he will become exactly that in the future.
Don't be surprised if Helenius takes a step back in competition if they can't get any big names in the ring with him.

Something I've noticed in Helenius is improvement from fight to fight.
He finished off Peter more efficiently and Lyakhovich more aggressively than he did Brewster.
And he looked in better shape against Lyakhovich than he has in past fights. He's still a bit soft in the tummy, but he doesn't have the fat there that he had before (like in the Bidenko fight).
he seemed gassed in spurts huffing and puffing a bit
wonder what a constant work rate against him will do.

I like him so I hope they develop him properly like you state
thanks for the information
I like him but I get the sense they're going to rush him way too fast and he will be yet another guy we HOPED would be a challenge.
good skills offensively though. Wonder about his stamina he looked a bit sloppy and gassed at times in the Liakhovich fight

I haven't seen much of him, but would like to. Maybe he is nothing to get excited about, but he has few names on his list that I was surprised to learn he beat.... even if they are at the tail end of their careers. At any rate he might be exciting to watch with his apparent power.

He struggled with a shot, undersized Hw brawler with a shot chin in Samuel Peters (who never was that good in the first place) and Liakhovich, a 36 year old fighter who is a jurneyman in this stage of his career, (ranked 66 in the very weak HW div) coming of a 1 1/2 long layoff and they were winning on the scorecards until the KO.
Yes, a big threat....
