Let's be clear that it is not Floyd Mayweather who ducked Miguel Cotto. But it is Team Cotto who ducked Floyd Mayweather.
For a time, between 2003-05, Miguel Cotto was moving up through the light Welterweight division like a freight train. The guy is a warrior with tremendous heart and a heavy left hand.
There was a lot of talk of a potential bout between the two. This is why Cotto elected to fight DeMarcus Corley, as Floyd had been the distance with Chop Chop. Cotto outweighed Corley by 9lbs that night and still ended up doing the chicken-dance. Don't get me wrong, Floyd got rocked a couple of times by Corley too.
So Team Cotto decided, rather than risk similar irreversible mistakes against Floyd, lets give him Cotto's clone. Cue Henry Bruseles. If you haven't seen that fight, I suggest you go watch it closely. Both Cotto and Hatton were ringside for that bout, and consequently campaigned in other alphabet titles after witnessing total annialation, and humiliation of this young prospect.
However, don't get it twisted, Bob Arum has been pulling Cotto's strings for the longest. He put Miguel through so much. The smartest move Floyd ever made was to rid himself of that lying sack.
Not really a case of Floyd ducking, just a painful process dealing with Arum, who also owes Floyd millions from the Gatti and Judah fights.
Peace to all...
Its a good ****ing thing Floyd didn't fight Margarito back then. I'm sure the suspect Margarito would have plastered his way to beating Floyd like he did his past opponents. Cotto vs Floyd was the dream match and the confidence Cotto had riding on his back would have made for fireworks between the two in the ring. Its a shame the fight didn't happen earlier in their career.
Think about this - Once Mayweather left Arum Cotto became his next biggest star/cash cow. In 2006 before Floyd left he was calling out Miguel and both Bob and Evangelista Cotto said he wasn't ready for the Mayweather fight. So let's say Cotto had became good enough by 2008 and didn't get beat up with bricks by Bumgarito. Even still, do you guys seriously think that a shrewd businessman like Arum was really going to put his new cash cow in a position to get more than likely beat and damaged in the process against by someone who had said "F"ck you i'm leaving" just a year or so earlier? He was too smart to ever let that happen. If Cotto was going to lose to anyone it had to be a Top Rank guy. Not Floyd.
Like Manny Pacquiao. Then once Pacquiao lost it was also to a Top Rank guy (Bradley). Bob only made May-Pac once he had put Manny in with ALL of his fighters. He never wanted Cotto or Pacquiao to face Floyd. It was bad for business.
As far as I know,Mayweather was strictly aiming for a fight with Gatti during that time. And its 2008 where most people wanted to see Cotto and Mayweather and Mayweather made up a bunch of excuses not to fight Cotto and it ended there.Yet another important fight that Mayweather managed to avoid fighting.
What exactly where these excuses mayweather made? I don't recall them, I do however recall Bob arum making many excuses not to match Cotto with Floyd.
The Bobfather protected Cotto because he knew he wasn't ready. Meanwhile Arum was telling all the media Cotto was ready and Mayweather didn't want it. It's crazy how much he can manipulate the boxing media. Even Cotto's uncle said he wasn't ready. Funny how as soon as he left Arum the fight got made immediately. :lol1:
All these reasons why floyd didn't face his best opposition in their primes, doesn't change the fact that the fights didn't happen when they would have been best. I don't get how it's good enough for his fans if there's some hearsay or excuse that makes it not his fault. Bottom line is we were all cheated out of great fights for good or mediocre fights in their place...wgaf who's at fault or who "ducked" who. It's like trying to prove another fighter didn't take a fight under certain terms adds to a guy's legacy these days...fans gotta get off these fighter's nuts.
Listen here dude. You have some nerve posting a thread with facts in it. How dare you come on NSB and not believe that Floyd ducked Miguel Cotto. Independent thinking based on factual evidence will get you punished.
Its not that I have some nerve. Why are people so filled with hate and jealousy. I really commend Miguel Cotto. He is a true warrior. But Bob Arum and Team Cotto wanted no parts of Floyd. Cotto has never indicated or verbalized a desire to fight Floyd. He's been rocked by guys who weigh significantly less than him. Guys who didn't punish him for his mistakes. A highly anticipated fight. But at the end of the day, bar politics most people wanna see Floyd get badly hurt, simply because he doesn't...
Floyd has been the best for so long, there's always gonna be a someone he shouldve fought or ducked. A prime cotto is a B level fighter maybe B+ on good days and would not have become even close to beating floyd.
They pump fighters up, Floyd beats em, time for the excuses
Cotto was too slow to deal with Floyd. Floyd is and always has been on another level. Compare the 2 now
What do Cotto , Margarito, and Pacquiao have in common?
BOB ARUM...................
These are the three fighters that people like to say that Floyd ducked right?
Well here are some facts for you.
Fact.....Bob Arum called Mayweather the greatest fighter he has seen in the last 45 years. He also said that about Pacquaio after Floyd left his a$$
Fact.....Bob never let Mayweather fight his then cash cow Delahoya while both were with Top Rank. Floyd got the fight after he left Bobs A$$
Fact.....Mayweather realized that he would never get his dream fight against delahoya because Bob and delahoya were not doing business together. Why? Because delahoya left Bobs a$$
Fact.....Bob Arum owes Mayweather money from the Gatti and Judah fights and still hasn't paid Mayweather because Floyd left his a$$
Fact.....Mayweather bought himself out of Bob arums contract for 750 thousand and left his a$$
Fact.....Bob Arum said that Floyd was ducking Cotto, Margarito, and Pacquiao after Floyd left his a$$
My point is...........why would a man who Bob called the best fighter in the last 45 years duck anybody?
Cotto, Pacquiao, Margarito, were all active and fighting when Bob made that comment.
Bob didn't call Mayweather a ducker until Mayweather left his a$$
And the Cotto, Margarito, Pacquaio fights will never happen until they do what Delahoya and Mayweather did.
And thats..................... To leave Bob Arum's a$$
Well said, I totally agree... it is obvious that it went this way
I have evidence of Arum turning down a Mayweather offer to face Cotto.
I'll gladly take some points off anyone who denies this.
Side note: I thought Cotto and hatton were ringside for the Gatti bout (at the beginning, in front of Fat Dan):

I believe you. I remember very clearly also that there was a story on this site years ago saying that Frank Warren, Hatton's promoter at the time, had turned down an offer from Mayweather's camp to fight Ricky Hatton in what would have been Mayweather's first fight at 140. However, when Mayweather retired after the De La Hoya fight, no one remembered this and claimed that Mayweather was dodging Hatton. It was only after Floyd beat the hell out of Hatton that Hatton suddenly became too small to fight at 147.
Listen here dude. You have some nerve posting a thread with facts in it. How dare you come on NSB and not believe that Floyd ducked Miguel Cotto. Independent thinking based on factual evidence will get you punished.
Truest words ever spoken on this message board. Unfortunately, they will get you punished along with the threadstarter.
They could have fought in 2008...after Cotto beat Mosley and Floyd beat Hatton in 2007...but Floyd took his vacation...
Arum may have been a problem but I did wanna see it happen...
They could have fought years earlier at 140, as the thread started stated. However, neither Arum nor Cotto's people wanted to put him in the ring with Mayweather. You clowns who keep claiming Floyd ducked Cotto in 2008 always seem to forget about this fact.
Floyd has been the best for so long, there's always gonna be a someone he shouldve fought or ducked. A prime cotto is a B level fighter maybe B+ on good days and would not have become even close to beating floyd.
mayweather wanted 10 million to fight cotto when he just got his previous career high of 5 million against judah.
mayweather made up comical excuses not to fight cotto such as he lives too far away and he's not the CEO of his own company.
mayweather retired when cotto was at his peak and that was the biggest fight in boxing.
stop revising history!
Floyd had 2 problems back then.Cotto and margarito.
Floyd had 2 choices back then.fight or vacation.
Floyd chose vacation.thumbs down.
Floyd still had 2 choices after.vacation or let the dust clear.
Floyd chose both.
Because of top rank? .... why does floyd only fight golden boy promotion fighters
Floyd wanted Cotto when he was on the come up and apparently, Arum wouldn't have been an issue.
Cotto came into his own, became a respectable champion and threat and then....
Arum representing Cotto became an issue
Cotto wasn't a PPV figure
Cotto resided in Puerto Rico
Cotto's first name began with the letter "M" and Floyd never fights fighters who's names begin with an "M"
The situation in Sudan worried Floyd too much for him to concentrate on a fight with Cotto
I don't know what other excuses Floyd threw at the boxing world, but there were plenty more.
was a cotto fight ever offered to Floyd?
did Floyd ever turn down the fight?
why wouldn't Floyd fight Miguel Cotto? why would he be scared of Cotto?
people acting like Cotto was tearing up the 147 division back in 07 and 08 when in reality his biggest win was a close decision over a past prime Mosley. at best he was the #2 welter weight no offense but no one is ever going to duck Miguel Cotto
