^^ I work in sales and we have a huge Puerto Rico clientele and all day I all I heard from the Ricans was about Huricane Irene..I went to check up on the news to see what was going on and found this article in El Nuevo Dia....
Gomez came in over confident and under trained. He moved up from 22 to 26 and was overweight at the weight-in! Then jumped into a sweat box to make weight.Go figure! He was also seen hanging out all night with some actress from Puerto Rico days before the fight! These are not excuses, just facts. Gomez got what he deserved, he as a professional should have taken the fight seriously.
I don't doubt that these things happened, but who's to say that meant Gomez didn't train sufficiently? Wilfredo was moving up in weight for the first time; he might've miscalculated his training to make the limit. Most fighters walk around at a much higher weight than their "fighting weight". And he was hanging out with some chick "days before the fight"? Does that seem so strange? Even if these things affected him, that doesn't mean that "Bazooka" would've won if things had been different.
Salvador dealt a beating on Wilfredo in the first round. Conditioning had little to do with anything at that point. Gomez fought bravely, but had an uphill battle trying to overcome the effects of the opening. When you consider how well Wilfredo did after almost being demolished in the first, it seems doubtful that he wasn't in shape.
No problem men, Irene is pissing all over us right now(raining), and winds are starting to get wild!!
About the thread it was a sad day when Gomez lost, but it was even sadder when Chava crash that damn Porsche!!
Be careful and stay safe...you and your family!
I remember when this fight took place. It's unbelievable that thirty years later it's still being hotly discussed. I just watched it again on Youtube. Sanchez mauled Gomez in the first round. It's a testament to Wilfredo's guts that he got past the first and actually fought up until the eighth round. His right cheekbone was shattered and both his eyes were closing by the minute. Salvador was out-boxing him at every turn and was landing almost all the hard shots.
I think it's unlikely that Gomez took Sanchez lightly. Wilfredo had moved up in weight to challenge the champion, Salvador. If there was any lack of training, it would've been seen in Gomez's conditioning. Instead, the fight was almost over in the first round. If it wasn't for the beating Wilfredo took in the opening round, the fight might've looked very different. Gomez was playing catch-up for the rest of the match. It was a great win for Salvador, and a courageous performance by Wilfredo. When two great fighters meet, someone (usually) has to lose....
my bad...
I actually ran into it by accident...just went to check up on Huricane Irene for our Puerto Rican clients....hope you all stay safe.....
I noticed how most of the people leaving comments aren't giving Sanchez to much credit and rather just saying how Gomez didn't take the fight serously.....I don't believe it..Gomez was undefeated and the Sanchez fight was a huge fight....it wasn't like when Tyson fought Buster Douglas...that was clearly a fight in wich Tyson just took Buster for granted...it's all good though....excuses don't change the record.
