It is being reported that Britain’s premier boxing broadcaster Sky Sports will drop pay-per-view for the foreseeable future after a troubled spell with the premium presentations over the last year.
A dispute with Amir Khan’s management and two disappointing features starring David Haye have persuaded Sky to pull out of more pay-as-you-watch deals in the upcoming boxing season.
Having withdrawn PPV status for Amir Khan’s title fight with Irishman Paul McCloskey because of a poor undercard billing, dull fights involving Haye against Audley Harrison and Wladimir Klitschko went on to further irk customers who felt as if they were being duped to part with their money.
Despite the shows proving lucrative for Sky and all parties involved the broadcaster decided it was expecting too much of an audience who pay a significant monthly subscription to shell-out for individual fights.
A senior source at Sky has been quoted by the Daily Express as saying, ‘We spend too much time trying to do deals on boxing for a limited return and do not think it’s fair on our audience to ask them to pay more for boxing. That is not to say we will never return to pay-per-view. It’s just not right for us at the moment.’
The move could usher in a more varied coverage menu for fans and clears the way for independent pay-per-view broadcasters such as Primetime to pick up more fighters after successful presentations with Amir Khan.
And with Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora’s domestic dust up peaking at 2.9 million viewers on Channel 5, terrestrial TV also looks on course to get more involved with the sport.

With Goldenboy taking all of their business to primetime tv after the khan dispute which will kill boxing in the uk
Nobody will pay to watch GB fights in the uk on ppv, mayweather vs ortiz is going to be a major flop on here
The next chance for a ppv to happen is perhaps Khan vs maidana (if its in the uk)
or khan vs floyd
until then I doubt we will see any more ppvs for a while
Haye v Harrison was the biggest joke. Anyone who knew ANYTHING about boxing would have stayed well away from that fight.
Sky also should have broadcast Froch's fights ages ago. They've missed loads of his fights and his ones with Pascal, Taylor, Kessler and Abraham have been extremely entertaining.
Let's hope the performance against Johnson piques the interest of the British public as it was another great Cobra performance.
