People just go off of what others say. One person says Cotto looked like **** in the Mayorga fight then people jump on the same boat without clearly watching the entire fight thorougly. Cotto won 9 of the rounds before KO'n him.. Haters will always say he shot..
He's probably not shot, but certainly past his best. People talk about his layoff, but are you forgetting what DLH did to Mayorga after an even longer layoff? This should not have been competitive at all. Mayorga had what, one fight in like two years before that?
Mayo last fight was last December
Its cliche but true styles make fights. The better fighter doesnt always win.
No on this site can tell me Prime for Prime that Margarito is a better fighter than Cotto. But in the rin we saw what happened. Same with Vernon and Mayo.
No Marg isnt a better boxer than Cotto, but an accumilation of punches with plaster will change that very quickly!
No, but a fight between the 2 should not have even been competitive let alone have had Mayorga beat Vernon twice and one by KO.
Like Emanual Steward said when training Mayorga "If Ricardo ever threw a straight punch, it would have been by accident" LOL

Wait Mayorga was 38, old and shot when Forrest fought him??

That's why he's shot.
Letting a 38 year old Mayorga put up a good fight against you, you're not that good of a fighter.
De La Hoya and Trinidad off their peak, knocked out a younger, stronger, fresher Ricardo Mayorga in 6-8 rounds respectively, back in 04-06, long time ago. If you're an elite fighter, you're not supposed to go 11 rounds with this version of Mayorga. That is why people also called Mosley shot and old, because he also took to long to take out a past prime Mayorga, so they counted him out against Margarito.
I don't care if Cotto won every round and stopped him in the 12 round. I predicted a 6th round TKO for Cotto, and he took 6 more rounds to do it against that version of Mayorga, and let Mayorga have too many good moments in that fight. I thought Cotto was blow him out, like he was put there for. It wasn't supposed to be a competitive fight.
Given your phylosophy, Vernon Forrest was a **** boxer! Idiot!.....
From what I remember cotto looked pretty good. Worked nice off the jab and landed hard punches all night he just couldn't hurt him till the last round. People forget that Cotto is not a one punch knockout artist so I don't know why people were thinking he was gonna knock him out early.
Cotto may have lost a step via loaded wraps but he is a far cry from shot. In my opinion he's still the best 154lb fighter on the planet and should be favoured over Margs, Angulo, Canelo, Williams, K9, Wolak and all those other dudes.
His biggest problems are he now cuts very easily with all his scar tissue and fighting 2 Divisions North of where he started is a bit on the short side.
You guys are funny, Margarito goes 12 rounds with a nobody and gasses out in the fight but its called "getting rounds in." Cotto KO's his guy in the 12th and now he is shot, completely negating the fact that the size and weight difference was akin to Manny vs Margarito and Cotto was still able to get a KO from it. Then you guys say he hasn't fought anyone worth a damn in his last two fights, and give him sh*t for it. Two things wrong with this, the first being Foreman was supposed to run circles around him, he was undefeated and young. When Cotto beats him though, he was a bum undeserving of a title Ok...
Mayorga was nothing more than a tune-up for Margarito which was supposed to happen in July. So saying Cotto is "taking it easy" is also garbage that fight was postponed because of Margarito's eye, to me it looks like Cotto was trying to stay active but couldn't because of out of his control circumstances. Secondly, as for him even picking Mayorga he is almost the same exact size as Margarito but maybe a bit more bulky. He is a fighter who taunts you like Margarito he was hitting his chin and shaking his head at Cotto's hard shots. Margarito does the same thing as well as smiles when he gets hit, it was mainly to make Cotto not get discouraged if he can't hurt the guy. Its obvious that this happened in the first fight with Margarito. Also Mayorga throws punches from crazy angles as does Margarito, but I think Mayorga has a lot more hand speed.
They aren't the same fighter but I have to say its the closest thing they could get, as well as Cotto having a new trainer as well. Cotto isn't what he was but he doesn't need to be because he got hit way too much and this high in weight to slug it out with these guys is suicide of course he has to box more and attack less, its really the only way he'll be able to win. Finally it isn't like Cotto can't box effectively he did it early as a pro and has long amateur career. He isn't going to be Floyd but can apply more pressure when needed than Floyd could, thus he is a boxer/puncher which is what he always should have been and not a brawler like a Margarito.
I agree 100% you are right on the money.

*****in post, my good sir.

I am too baffled whenever I hear/read these kind of comments. His only two losses came at the hands of an alleged plaster loaded gloves cheater and against one of the best of all time who's also suspicious of using PEDs. Oh and he's about to get the chance to avenge one of them this December. In my personal opinion, I honestly think Cotto is a legend. The guy has fought the best out there and I still don't see signs of him slowing down.
I've seen a change in his style, no doubt about it but I just don't see this damaged good fighters that some of you refer to at times. He moves a tad more than he used to but that's because of the wars that he's gone thru and the things he's learned along the way, specially now under a new HOF trainer. He will still exchange with you and cause some damage, the guy is still a warrior. He's as dangerous as any elite fighter out there.
Brilliantly stated!
Cotto is fine!! Of course he is not the terminator anymore but he is fine. He is doing exactly like B-Hop did, that's change his style a little bit so his career can last a little longer plus he is fighting a lot smarter like B-Hop. You got to realize that the Mayorga fight was a 12rd tune up for Margerito. He need the work after the long layoff and surgery. Plus do you guys not realize he only lost 2 fights and one is very suspect and the other was against THE best in the world(who made Shane do something he never done before in his entire career and that's run for 12rds until he got blisters on his feet) and that's saying a lot for a fighter that is so called shot. For those who say he is shot, put your money against him and see how you feel after his next few fights!!!
FYI he is the 3rd biggest PPV draw in boxing. Not bad for a shot fighter!!!
Why are people saying Cotto is shot? by the way this was a damn good fight
Cotto and Margarito were shot after they fought. They both took a lot of punishment and it's definitely a fact that both did not look the same after that fight.
@154: He brutalizes Mayweather. There's a reason Floyd has been running scared of Cotto through his entire career.
how the hell do you bring up Floyd??
its mostly flomos who say cotto was shot after he fought margarito so they can discredit pac even though cotto beat some good fighters and won 2 belts after losing to margarito. you can tell cotto doesn't care about boxing anymore though because he hardly ever fights and doesn't want to put in any hard work like making 147 which he still could if he wanted to. complacency has set in.
